The only thing that stops the nausea is eating - worried about weight :(

Does anyone else have this?
I posted in a thread last week asking when sickness started for people as I thought I'd got away with it but at the weekend the queasiness started. I have to eat something as soon as I wake up and then find myself having to constantly snack throughout the day or I feel terrible and can't function. The problem is I'm eating so much more than I normally would, and most of it is carbs!
I normally don't eat potatoes, pasta etc and only limited brown bread as it bloats me out and doesn't agree with me, so now I already feel huge.
I've been trying to incorporate veg into dinner where I can but I really don't want it, or salad - it tastes like cardboard.
I'm worried I'm going to stack on the weight too quickly - I'm only short - or put myself at risk of GD.
Has anyone else got this? I'm 7-8 weeks at the moment.

I’m similar - I’m not eating constantly but when I do it is absolute shite. I normally eat quite healthily, no carbs etc. Just do what you need to to get through the morning sickness, then think about healthy eating and exercise afterwards if it makes you feel good.

1990carey · 29/05/2019 17:36

Yeo that's been me! Everything seems to have calmed down tho in the last week or so, but I am still struggling with food a little bit. Dont worry too much about it, at the end of the day you have to do what's best for you, and what makes you feel better. I have eaten so many salt and vinegar crisps its unreal, but it's the only thing that helped the nausea! When it all starts calming down you can focus on getting a healthier diet back on track. Its unfair because everything is shouting at is to be healthy all the time because it's what's best for baby, but realistically we sometimes cant do that! So dont let it pressure you, do what you need to for now.

Aberforthsgoat · 29/05/2019 17:37

thanks @gettingonabitnow it's getting me down a bit, I feel so bloated and gross! I'm trying to incorporate some healthy stuff in there today - today hasn't been too bad, sugar free granola and some fruit, a jacket potato and cheese and beans and I have some soup for dinner but I've been snacking on salted popcorn throughout the day.
Other days have been very bread heavy. I'm hoping it's just a phase otherwise I'm going to be an actual tank!

@1990carey mine has been salted popcorn, I'm getting through so much of it in a day! But it really helps. Hopefully this will phase out in a couple of weeks and I can go back to lower carb and lots of fruit, veggies, salads like normal

Have you tried chewing gum?

thenightsky · 29/05/2019 18:12

When I was pregnant the only time I didn't feel sick was when my stomach was full. I did put on too much weight in the first three months, but by week 12 to 14 I lost that awful sickness and could go for a few hours without constant food. In the last month I actually lost a few pounds.

Don't chew gum... it made me even more ravenous.

Cosmogirl86 · 29/05/2019 18:13

I ate about six times a day in my first trimester
Try smaller meals, plenty of fruit and veg
Protein and fibre combos are your friend - I have no idea how many chicken sandwiches I ate!

Aberforthsgoat · 29/05/2019 18:43

mr chewing gum is fine for a few minutes but then makes me want to gag
I'll have to try chicken sandwiches, might give that a go tomorrow
when I'm not feeling queasy I seem to have horrendous gas - one or the other!

I feel your pain!!!!!!
I'm 7+3 and for the last week maybe week and a half I've had horrible nausea and been dry heaving, the only thing sounding good for me is toast, biscuits, rice, crisps and cereal, nothing nutritious or healthy but it seems to help if I constantly eat it!
Big meals seek to make me feel worse actually!
Sucking on sugar free sweets or mints has been a life saver aswell! I've also been taking my folic acid tablet just before bed which helps with the sickness!
But like everyone is saying don't worry about it, the nausea isn't forever so just eat what you can now and focus on the healthy stuff later when cucumber doesn't make you want to throw up everywhere haha!!!

LittleAndOften · 29/05/2019 18:46

Yes! I'm 16 weeks now and I've gone up 2 dress sizes because for the first 3 months eating was the only thing that stopped the nausea.

dottyrobin · 29/05/2019 18:49

I'm 7-8 weeks and have to eat every few hours to stop the nausea. I've also been worried about gaining too much but I've started eating less big meals and just snacking all round now which works out similar calories-wise. Sometime I'll have a few mini pretzels or a small piece of cheese and that will stop the nausea for quite a while. Not healthy in the slightest but I'm trying!
The bloat is insane though - but I'm trying not to let it bother me.
I hope you feel better soon x

1990carey · 29/05/2019 18:51

@millsss cucumber 🤢🤢🤢🤢 just the smell on it's own is disgusting atm 🤢🤢🤢

ELM8 · 29/05/2019 18:59

I had the same from week 6 but it went just after week 12 and am now desperately trying to make up for it! The amount I ate in those 6 weeks was disgusting.

bearface45 · 29/05/2019 19:37

Yes this is 100% me, when you feel that I’ll though i’ll do anything to feel better. Issue is in finding something I can actually eat with major food aversions. It started at 7 weeks for me and only just feeling better in last few days at 15 weeks!

Heyha · 30/05/2019 00:42

I was like that in the first trimester, put on a fair bit of weight (was slim before) but weirdly I haven't put on much more weight, maybe a pound or two, since about 25 weeks and I'm 37 now. I think I must have burnt off what I put on during the early days as the baby got growing.

Andersonx3 · 30/05/2019 06:24

I was exactly the same from 5-10 weeks. Living off of a beige diet (pasta, potatoes, chips, potato waffles etc) and I gained about 4kg, now I'm 13 weeks and have lost 2.5kg as I'm now suffering with terrible food aversions!

For now, eat what you can. When this passes you can start eating the right diet. For now, just take what you can stomach.

YouMaySayImADreamer · 30/05/2019 06:42

Yes I was exactly the same this time (haven't been in previous pregnancies). I felt disgusting by week 17 when it stopped and now at 20 weeks feel that my arms, face and legs all look so chunky!

I have now resolved to resume healthy eating and start some exercise. In my previous pregnancies I didn't eat particularly healthily or exercise at all from this point (though I didn't over eat either) and I didn't put tonnes of weight on by the end. So my thinking is that in eating healthily and exercising from now, I might even things out a little by the end.

I also read the other day that you store fat in the first trimester, and that you stop doing this in the second trimester and that baby uses that fat to grow. I had never heard that before, but found it encouraging!

PeachesandPie · 30/05/2019 07:09

I wouldn't worry about it. With DD I was sick multiple times a day and still put on over a stone by 12 weeks as I had to eat constantly. It balanced out and I didnt put on any more weight between then and around 30 weeks.

Kathryn19 · 30/05/2019 07:37

Nothing really to add just want to agree with others to try not to worry! Just eat as well as you can when it is possible, if that's "too much" at points then so be it - being pregnant is hard work as it is without worrying more! Touch wood the sickness will get better and you'll be able to cut down to a more normal level, but whatever happens pregnancy is temporary and this time will pass. I am still eating more carbs than normal as even after morning sickness passed I still get nausea and light headedness but weight gain definitely slowed from week 15 and has gone from being more than recommended to totally in line (now 28 weeks). I'm also focussing on getting as much good into my body as possible, rather than just thinking about total calories.

CatWizard13 · 30/05/2019 07:39

I feel exactly the same. it's so hard I really don't want to over eat but anything to help the nausea. the food aversions don't help either so preparing healthy food is just hard work.
this is my second pregnancy and last one I put on 4.5 stone in total so I'm really anxious not to repeat that especially as I'm still not back to pre preg weight.
any good snack ideas that help the nausea buy aren't too calorific?

junebirthdaygirl · 30/05/2019 07:47

Just eat little and often. so no meals just the food you can manage in small amounts spread through the day. I found dry crackers good. I wouldn't worry about nutrition as you've eaten well up to know and will again so its survival now. Don't let yourself get hungry as that brings nausea up.
And no mints as they destroy your teeth.

userabcname · 30/05/2019 07:54

Yep I had this. The vomiting kicked in about a week after the nausea and that put paid to my fears - I didn't put on any weight in the 1st trimester at all! It's actually worse now that I can eat after 16 weeks of living on crackers and toast - I have definitely put weight on so need to reign it in. I think until the nausea eases there's not much you can do so try not to worry at this point in time.

Karigan195 · 30/05/2019 07:57

I’m 27 weeks now. Pretty much everyone I have spoken to had massive carb cravings in early pregnancy excepting only those too ill to eat anything!

It will even out don’t worry. Try to defeat it a little by keeping good filling foods around. Bananas, whole grain toast, nuts, seeds etc. They really help and will keep your vitamins etc up too

Aberforthsgoat · 30/05/2019 07:59

Thank you all, I’m sorry you’ve suffered or are suffering but it’s encouraging to hear it’s pretty normal.
I’ve woken up today not feeling queasy for the first time in about a week and you’d think I’d be happy about it but now I’m worried that it’s gone! Although I imagine it will pop back up at some point...

I felt like this my entire pregnancy - and ended up gaining 4 stone. But with healthy eating and exercise lost it all within 6 months. I'm now smaller than I was before pregnancy - admittedly he's 6.

You've just got to do whatever gets you through it.
