Found out that my baby is a girl and right from pissing on the stick I have decided it would be Matilda for a girl.

My other kids are Megan and Harvey and think that goes nicely with it.

At first DH wasnt too keen but thought it was alright - fine thought I, I can talk him round.

But now we know it is a girl he has decided it is horrible, even went as far as to say he hates it

SNOT FAIR

Shall I insist, claiming that as I have to push her out I should be able to name her or can anyone think of some nice names that are similar and suit my other two?

I love the name Matilda, shortened to Tilly. If I do have a second child, that is the top name if we had a girl.

Also like Martha.

Radley · 21/07/2007 10:44

I like that name too, its luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurvely

Nbg · 21/07/2007 10:44

Not sure on Stella

You know I picked Esme and quite liked Orla for this one.

RavenclAwen · 21/07/2007 10:45

btw I like Matilda and actually a lot of the other names suggested.

I am cautious about choosing one of the names as they are very popular. DP already has a name if we have dd, i like it but not 100% about it.

legalalien · 21/07/2007 10:51

I'm not sure how to advise without knowing a bit about your surname (is that just me). obv you can't say, but maybe number of syllables and the main vowel sounds / what it rhymes with?

also, make sure you check out the initials. There are a bunch of jobs out there where you're known by your initials, and you could be setting poor DD up for a tedious time!

PeckaRolloverAgain · 21/07/2007 10:53

My surname rhymes with Bills with just leading letter change hahah there goes my anonymity (sp)

Meredith?

legalalien · 21/07/2007 10:57

I'm not sure about Matilda with something that rhymes with Bills.

Tilly Bills (or anything that rhymes with Bills) is not that great imho. Must be taking after my mum - I was going to be called Charlotte but the vowels didn't work out. Didn't stop her calling me Charlie for about four years though.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 21/07/2007 11:00

Yes, the double L is a problem with the surname. Nell is out for the same reason.

BUT anytime she would be using her full name together I would imagine she would use Matilda.

Whats the use anyway he doesnt blardy like it!

H and I went through lists seperately and crossed out what we hated, ticked what we liked and then we compared our lists anything that we both ticked was in with a chance

Although.......he named our daughter Chloe which wasn't on either list - I was to delieriously happy to care at the time but now a few years on it really bugs me as I don't really like that name at all.

My mother and father couldn't agree ona name for my brother so when mum went to register him she didn't use either of the names that she or Dad liked but named him something completely different (they liked Peter and Paul) Graham - after the feollow at the birth registry office!!!! Apparently Dad was livid but I am pleased cause I like Graham better that either of their preferences!

My choices -if I had the chance again would either be Tobii (YES for a girl) Chelsea, Shelby or Maggie

Riss70 · 21/07/2007 11:03

Oh and another thing take into consideration you last name because I also liked Beth but our last name start with O so her initals would have been BO - not a good thing for a young girl at school

Nbg · 21/07/2007 11:04

Oh I love Meredith

fab name

kimi · 21/07/2007 11:09

Does he have a reason for not liking the name? Does it remind him of someone?
I think it is a lovely name tbh.
Could you use it as a middle mane?
How about marilla?

legalalien · 21/07/2007 11:12

I think Madeleine would be nice too, although I guess you're then at risk about people making the obvious links and drawing conclusions about your choice of name.

DollyPopsOut · 21/07/2007 11:12

I have a Matilda and I love it! Didn't occur ti me that it was an old name though. I thought it just sounded very strong and dignified .

Personally, I would only choose a nane which bith DH and I liked. I wanted Susannah or Isabella, but dh not keen. He wanted Poppy, eve though DD1's favourite doll is Poppy! Matilda was the first one we agreed on. I would be fairly pissed off at having to put up with a name I didn't like just because he did, so in our house we had to compromise.

I love these threads - esp when someone says "I can't stand X" and then tells you what they do prefer! THank god we all like different things. BTW, no one has gone yuck to my face on my name choice - perhaps they are doing it behind my back !

Good luck with the birth. I am sure your DD will be lovely whatever her name .

DollyPopsOut · 21/07/2007 11:14

Sorry about earlier crap typing. Was expressing so only 1 hand free.

Gordon Ramsay has both a Matilda and a Megan, so you would be in good company. Or not, I suppose, depending on your POV.

legalalien · 21/07/2007 11:18

Isabel was one of my choices for a girl's name, if we had one. Was also a fan of Katharine, because there are lots of variants. Fortunately we didn't since neither of us could agree on girls' names at all.

What about Caitlin?

legalalien · 21/07/2007 11:19

um - fortunately we didn't have a girl, that is.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 21/07/2007 11:29

Isobel is my DD's middle name.

I really like Celeste but people keep saying its a contraceptive pill

Lucycat · 21/07/2007 11:34

I like Matilda too - actually it would suit my dd2 more than the name we chose for her - bit late to change now though seeing as she's 4.2

we do call her tilly floss anyway

yes wait until labour, dh's daren't argue with a woman in labour, then you go and register her just in case he sneaks Ermintrude in as her name.

TenaLady · 21/07/2007 12:17

If you like unusual names Marigold is lovely and shorten it to Goldie.

DollyPopsOut · 21/07/2007 13:55

I would be wary about registering a name by subterfuge (even though I know you were joking ). A friend of mine desperately wanted to call her baby Oliver. Her H wanted Edward. After the most horrific labour and em CS, baby was born and he went and registered him as Edward whilst she was still in hospital! This was before you made appts in advance.

Suffice it to say she has nver felt QUITE the same about her H again. And neither have most of her friends....

quint · 23/07/2007 09:13

you can still change a baby's name before it reaches the age of one dolly - does she (or did she) know that.

And I think Tilly Bills sounds lovely! It has a really nice sound to it.

Mu fave name ever was Phoebe but DH wouldn't have it. However with DD2 he relented (I think gave in to relentless going on is more like it but never mind!) however it didn't really suit her at birth (should have gone with it anyway as it would really suit her now! - nevermind).

Just be subtle, he may well come round but give it a few days until you have another go

MadLabOwner · 23/07/2007 09:19

What about a different name that you could shorten to Tilly? My friend is called Otilia but shortened to Tilly.

Jojay · 23/07/2007 09:33

You CAN'T force your husband to have a name that he doesn't like - it's his child too, and imagine how cross you'd be if he tried to impose a name that you don't like, onto you??

There are loads of lovely names out there - I'm sure you can agree on something.

I like:

Gabriella,
Suzannah,
Meg (but you've got a Megan already)
Anna
Elizabeth - loads of nice shortened versions
Kate
Isabella
