Just wondering about the actual success rate of a sweep? Thanks

Yes but I was 41+6 and already 2-3cm dilated so I was already really ready.

waterandmilk · 19/05/2019 21:43

I didn't. I didn't want a sweep but then I got desperate. I regretted it. I won't ever have it again.
Evidence to say it works is very little. Mostly performed on overdue pregnancies so hard to tell if they actually work.

Bambamber · 19/05/2019 21:58

I didnt

mintich · 19/05/2019 22:02

No and I had 3 sweeps! I wouldn't have one again

UrsulaPandress · 19/05/2019 22:03

5 sweeps then a section

Maybebaybe · 19/05/2019 22:05

I did. Within 48 hours of the sweep. Baby was born 14 days before edd. The doctor who did the sweep was not confident it would work though and had booked me in for an induction 4 days after baby actually arrived.

babloon · 19/05/2019 22:07

Yes for 2nd at 38 weeks, came 24 hours later! Smile

delilabell · 19/05/2019 22:08

Nope. Had 3 and didn't work. Was also induced 3 times before it worked and even then needed waters broken and her to be moved as she was wedged on a shelf in my cervix so I'd discount mine from any averages Grin

sittingonacornflake · 19/05/2019 22:11

No. Had about 5. They're horrid and don't bloody work.

Cornishmum00 · 19/05/2019 22:22

I had one at 41+4 and went into labour 14hrs later

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 19/05/2019 22:24

Yes, I labour started whilst I was still at the appt. Baby born 8 hours later.

Leftielefterson · 19/05/2019 22:27

I had two sweeps. After the second I went into labour around 8 hours later.

Bunnybigears · 19/05/2019 22:27

Yes. Had both my babies after having a sweep. The 1st one I had the sweep in the morning and went into labour at 6 in the evening. The second one I had the sweep in the afternoon and went into labour at 3 in the morning.

Polestar50 · 19/05/2019 22:28

Yes. I was overdue and had 3 sweeps in a week. Last one was almost 14 days past due date.

In my experience, sweeps are horrid. Invasive and painful.

Labour started a few hours after the last sweep (maybe it would have started then anyway, who knows?) But it didn't progress very well and I ended up having an EMC the next eve.

My midwife was v pro 'natural' births and was doing the sweeps to try to avoid me being induced (I was completely on board with this too). However, if given the choice again, I'd go for an induction earlier on rather than waiting and having sweeps. But others may wellhave a different story to me and give the opposite advice!

For what it's worth, the EMC was actually fine and not too stressful. Even quite magical overall and certainly not the cold, clinical, scary experience I had in my mind.

Polestar50 · 19/05/2019 22:31

EMCS not EMC

ziggiestardust · 19/05/2019 22:32

Yes, I had a sweep on my due date and went into labour the next morning. Always worth a go in my opinion!

NomineCornelia · 19/05/2019 22:32

Yes, went into labour a few hours later. The midwife who did it was a friend and she did do a very good one at my request.

I think it probably nudges things along a bit quicker if you are heading in that direction anyway, and is easier for 2nd and subsequent babies.

Not sure what the success rate is for first babies from 37wks where medically indicated- not great I imagine.

fairybeagle · 19/05/2019 22:52

I had two and neither worked unfortunately

RiverMeadow · 19/05/2019 22:55

I have one booked on my due date and really hope it works!

I did! Had one at 40+3 in the morning, went into labour in the afternoon, DS was born at lunchtime the following day! Apparently my cervix was favourable though and I was already 1cm dilated. My sweep barely hurt at all so I'd definitely have one again.

Beldon · 19/05/2019 23:01

Yes went into labour quickly after, waters broke about 2 hours after and contractions strong and close together. Went to hospital and 3cm dilated - but didn’t dilate anymore than 3cm for hours. Ended up a very long and painful labour. Obviously can’t be absolutely sure but I really think if I’d turned down sweep and just waited a couple of days I would have had a labour similar to my first, baby just wasn’t ready. I would never have sweep again

UnicornDaisy · 19/05/2019 23:01

No .. I had 2 and neither worked and thought the sweeps were worse than the actual labour!!

IHeartKingThistle · 19/05/2019 23:08

Yes that evening. Though the midwife who did it said she was famous among the other midwives for being the most fucking brutal having the highest amount of successful sweeps Grin

happymummy12345 · 20/05/2019 00:16

I was due on Sunday 30th August 2015, I started having mild contractions on the Tuesday at 40+2, I was booked in for a sweep on the Wednesday but I declined as I wanted to see if labour would progress naturally. It didn't as the head wasn't fully engaged. The contractions continued but nothing happened.
So I had a sweep at 3pm on the Friday, 40+5. It didn't hurt at all and I wasn't uncomfortable (the midwife was surprised how relaxed and not bothered by it I was). The contractions started getting stronger after it. I went to the hospital at 9pm and by 10-10.30 I was in the birth centre. The midwife broke my waters about 2am, and I gave birth at 6.58am on the Saturday morning, at 40+6.
So yes it worked for me. I'm glad I had it.

InventedthePostIt · 20/05/2019 08:05

Yes was 38 weeks but had been uncomfortable for days already so think I was in slow labour already. Had the sweep in the afternoon and labour started 12 hours later.
