I have had two very complicated pregnancies both resulting in baby being born at 31 weeks, I'm currently 37 weeks and booked for c section in 2 weeks. How long roughly should I be kept in if everything goes "to plan"

I was home with in 24hrs

MeanMrMustardSeed · 11/05/2019 08:59

I was home the following day after my last planned section.

ArchieHarrison · 11/05/2019 09:00

In ours, until you poo! (2 nights).

FuckingHadEnough · 11/05/2019 09:06

I was out within 24 hours. You need to be on it though if you want to go home quickly. Where I was I had to be the driving force to get them to let me get out of bed after the spinal block wore off, I was in a shower 5 hours after my section, so I was cleaned up for when my DS visited, and I kept asking from the moment I woke up about going home. Baby had been checked and everything was fine with me too so I made myself a little annoying and kept asking. I think it definitely helped speed things along.

MamehaSan · 11/05/2019 09:06

I was in for 2 days with DS2. I probably could have gone home after 24 hours if I'd pushed them but was happy to take a bit longer, mainly so that I was moving a bit more easily given that DS1 was still a toddler and not fully understanding that I needed to be careful!

azulmariposa · 11/05/2019 09:14

Had c-section Friday morning and went home Sunday afternoon.
But that was because I had trouble BF- this wasn't to do with the section- women in my family just don't produce any milk!
There was a woman on the ward that had hers Friday lunchtime and went home that night, but I think it was her third one, so she knew what to expect.

Tulipsinmyvase · 11/05/2019 09:52

I was home within 24 hours after my elective. I had to drink loads to show I was passing fluids ok before they agreed to take the catheter out. After that we both got checked over and allowed to leave. I was much more relaxed at home, I’m hoping for a similar experience with baby #3 due November x

Tulipsinmyvase · 11/05/2019 09:54

Oh and I was breastfeeding I had to show Midwife’s that baby had a good latch, they were happy we were okay so no issues there as baby was feeding well.

Cherylshaw · 11/05/2019 09:59

Less than 24 hours

cookiechomper · 11/05/2019 10:02

In my hospital they want you out within 24 hours if possible. I've had four sections, I've stayed between 2-4 nights.

Lindy2 · 11/05/2019 10:09

I think I was in 2 nights. I think that's the norm at our hospital for a c-section. Baby was born early evening though rather than early afternoon (lots of emergency c sections kept bumping my turn later and later) which may have been why I was in for 2 rather than 1.

Snowy111 · 11/05/2019 10:13

I had one 16 years ago and it took generally 4 days as standard. I’m shocked at the fastness now I could barely walk the next day!

AppleKatie · 11/05/2019 10:13

At my hospital it was 2 nights for your first, 24 hours for subsequents. TBH for me it was too early and I wish I’d had the confidence to say ‘no I need to be here another night’.

Bloomburger · 11/05/2019 10:21

36 hours and she was my 3rd child, breastfeeding was established and all was well.

Ended up threatening to discharge myself as ward was so noisy and hit and unbearable but they were too busy to do the paperwork.

Bubblysqueak · 11/05/2019 10:31

My dsis was out after 8 hours. She was first on the list and was home by 3pm.

kelly14 · 11/05/2019 10:37

My hospital want have the express recovery so want you out on 24hours as long as all ok with you and baby , they make you get up and shower 5-6 hours after section. It was too soon for me as I was violently sick in the shower and in agony. I had to ask for morphine as paracetamol and ibropufen do nothing for me and I took oramorp home too as wasn’t leaving without it lol still out within 24 hours though.
I think I have an extremely low pain threshold as for me ( elective, had emergency one 13 years prior) I thought the recovery was absolute agony and I am dreading doing it again in Oct!

RhubarbAndMustard · 11/05/2019 10:43

I was in 2 nights but I wanted to stay the second. They gave me the choice although in hindsight I probably would have been better going home as had no sleep and no help with the baby as staff were so busy.

Travellingraspberry · 11/05/2019 10:46

I had my planned c-section in the morning and was home the following afternoon. I was expecting to have to stay in at least two nights as thought that was the norm but think as long as all is ok with you and the baby they like to get you home asap. It was my second child do dont know if thst makes any difference? They gave me liquid morphine to take at home if needed and clexane (blood thinning injections).

CrapTVAddict · 11/05/2019 20:39

I think it's awful that the hospitals are wanting mums out in 24 hours after a c section. Each case should be individual. I couldn't even stand up after 24 hours so I don't know how people manage to be home the same day Shock

MuchTooTired · 11/05/2019 20:39

I was in for two nights, but my DTs were slightly premature and were kept in to test their blood sugars with me on the ward.

trilbydoll · 11/05/2019 20:43

I had dd2 first thing Friday and went home Saturday afternoon because I was sick of being ignored. I don't think they would have thrown me out until Sunday if I hadn't asked.

Ended up back in hospital 3 days later because she wasn't feeding properly, in a perfect example of NHS understaffing ending up costing more than just having enough staff on the post natal ward in the first place.

riotlady · 11/05/2019 20:44

They wanted me home within 24 hours, I asked to say another night as I really didn’t feel like breastfeeding was going well.

(In retrospect, that was pointless as I didn’t really receive much additional help)

Lauren83 · 11/05/2019 20:46

22 hours, hospital that do an 'enhanced recovery' thing seem to get you out in 24 hours luckily mine did

Fatted · 11/05/2019 20:52

Jesus christ, I wouldn't have gone home 24 hours after having a c-section!

I was in for 5 days after my first but he needed antibiotics.

I had youngest on a Friday and they asked on Sunday if I wanted to go home. I was still in a lot of pain and needing tramadol, so they kept me in until the Monday.

Be realistic. Everyone heals differently. If you want out earlier then ask but don't be afraid of asking to stay longer.

ThanksItHasPockets · 11/05/2019 20:57

I could have been discharged after 24 hours as my hospital had a policy of accelerated recovery and was happy to discharge with Oramorph, but as baby needed SCBU we were in for four nights.
