Pregnant in the summer?

The first sign of heat today has got me thinking...how do heavily pregnant women get on in the summer months? I've been in and out of the garden (with protection obviously) and I feel considerably more sick so I've shut myself inside with plenty of water for the last couple of hours. I have a low bp which makes me sick and faint and quite a physical job so I don't know how I'm going to get on. Is anyone else worried about this?

DS was born in July 17 and it was so hot. I basically lived in shorts and strap top, DH bought me one of those hand held fans that mist you which was nice.
The next one is due in October so will be pregnant again through the summer chasing a toddler so I'm not sure what I'm going to do
Possibly buy an inflatable paddling pool and wallow

TwittleBee · 19/04/2019 16:50

Ah yeah DS was born during the last stretch of a heatwave. Omg the weather was horrid, just remember being so swollen, fainting a lot and still being sick up to when I went into labour early.

Of course I didn't learn from that and this DS#2 is due September so will be heavily pregnant during August, bleurgh.

My friend has suggested I get a frozen face roller as it helped her cool down and relax so ordering one of Amazon next pay check.

I’m wondering this too. DD was born at the beginning of May and that was hot enough. This one is due 31st July. I have ordered some maternity dresses of the Asda website today.

daphine2004 · 19/04/2019 17:08

I was going to post the same thing. Due end of August and whilst I love the sun/heat usually I’m not sure I’ll be living it this year.

Peacock14 · 19/04/2019 17:29

This was helpful https://www.mumsnet.com/pregnancy/how-to-stay-cool-when-pregnant

But doesn't solve keeping cool at work when you are on your feet all day. Maybe it won't be as hot as last year!Halo

@daphine2004 due end of August here too!
I was due in December 2012 with my first, I don't remember it being overly hot but I wasnt heavily pregnant in the mid summer months so it probably wouldn't of affected me much anyway.
Today has got me stuck inside too though and wondering how to cope throughout summer as I will be considerably more pregnant this time round.

daphine2004 · 19/04/2019 17:38

@Peacock14 thanks for sharing the link. I’ll definitely have a look for any tips.

@MissPollyHadADolly19 last time I was due in March and fell pregnant towards the end of summer, so never really worried much then (plus the summer was a wash out).

I’ve been finding this time round hard work wish tiredness and I really don’t want to have hot bedrooms in the mix too - we have fans at the ready and I really like lemon callipos (sp?) at the moment.

Peacock14 · 19/04/2019 17:38

I've had a look on amazon..they have a water bottle with a mist button, a cooling gel pad for pillows, soft gel ice packs, a gel face mask for the freezer, cooling towels and cool leg gel. All sound pretty good right now!

I don't know how I'm going to cope at work. It's an old building, windows don't open properly. Last year it was hitting 30 degrees on the hottest days. All the patients have fans but they don't benefit us coz we are running around too much. I'm dreading it I really am

abcriskringle · 19/04/2019 17:53

DH got me an AC unit for the bedroom. Used to nearly die at work (stuffy classrooms with 30+ teenagers traipsing in and out all day - although, agreeably, not too physical) and when I got home I'd blast the AC until it was cold, close the curtains and lie in my icy cool cave all evening.

Gillian1980 · 19/04/2019 17:56

Dd was born August 2015 and the last few weeks were awful! I spent a lot of time in the car with AC on, avoided my office which is like a greenhouse and used a fan constantly and kept well hydrated.

It was not pleasant at all and the hospital was unbearably hot!! Was just pouring with sweat the whole 2 days I was in.

Cookit · 19/04/2019 18:00

I think in a way it’s nicer actually.

My last pregnancy I was mostly pregnant in the summer and I don’t think I had to wear any winter maternity clothes. This time I’ve mostly had to.
Things that are better:

  1. maternity tights are horrible - don’t need to bother in summer.
  2. further on more layers of clothes were just uncomfortable, I am enjoying being back in less!
  3. swelling feet in boots or socks and shoes is horrible. Sandals are a god send.
  4. more time outside just makes me feel better. It’s nice to be able to pop outside for a quick walk whether at home or work when it all gets uncomfortable rather than stayed cooped up in unfavourable positions on chairs and sofas.
TrixieFranklin · 19/04/2019 18:01

I'm only 30 weeks so not quite heavily pregnant but today's been a struggle running round after toddler twins in the sun.
It's the first day in months I've been really sick too - not sure if it's the heat, I've probably not drunk enough or just a coincidence but I feel wiped out Blush

ShabbyAbby · 19/04/2019 18:03

Fat feet put up as much as possible and Ice in drinks and ice lollies

Cool showers

Flip flops

Hiding under a shawl in the shade

Teddybear45 · 19/04/2019 18:41

I think, arguably, it’s probably worse being in your first trimester during a heatwave. The heat is really ramping up my nausea / low Bp / tiredness and it’s not even 30 degrees yet. I’m also a bit terrified about using the tube as last year a few of the lines went up to nearly 40 degrees and I’m a fainter as it is! I can’t even tell work yet but the minute I do I’m going to work from home a lot more.

Jenniferyellowcat · 19/04/2019 18:49

DS was born after a three week heatwave and I cope with heat rubbishly at the best of times. I was very hot! But I had already given up work, so spent a lot of time driving around in my air conditioned car and went swimming. The other ‘normal’ summer bits weren’t too bad and we went on holiday etc. I wore cut off trousers and t-shirts all summer.

secretlyhermione · 19/04/2019 20:58

Am also due in October and dreading the heat especially cause I live in a country where summers get very hot. Do agree with one of the posters that at least the maternity wear will be more comfortable. Just hoping to find ways to cope with the heat, especially on public transport!

TrixieFranklin · 19/04/2019 21:31

Primark have some excellent stretchy skirts and dresses (not maternity but just buy a size or so up) for the summer that fit well and keep you cool.
I also invested in some 'maternity Spanx' which are essentially like tights but in shorts form to stop the chubby rub between my thighs Blush I bought them a size too big so they wouldn't actually be tight or uncomfortable.

eurochick · 19/04/2019 22:19

I mostly wore a giant wafty shirt and maternity bottoms. My consultant (I went private) kept trying to persuade me that I'd be absolutely fine with a nhs birth. I probably looked like a hobo but I was too hot to care! I certainly didn't look like I belonged on the posh private wing. Grin

Chanandlersbong · 19/04/2019 22:25

@meepmoop snap! My DS was born July 17 and I'm due another LO in October 😊

OP cool clothing and water was the only way I got through with DS. Oh and those spray bottles that mist cool water were a godsend. Here's hoping we all don't melt this summer if today was anything to go by!

whitehalleve · 19/04/2019 22:42

Being pregnant in the heatwave of summer 2017 was a shocker! Especially commuting on the tube

JuniperNarni · 19/04/2019 22:49

Buy a decent tower fan now before they sell out everywhere, sleeping is hard enough when pregnant, it's awful when the room is boiling hot too.

HarryHarry · 19/04/2019 22:50

Where I live, it’s -30 in winter and +30 in summer. Last time I was pregnant in winter and it was a nightmare - wearing my coat and boots exhausted me because of the extra weight they added and climbing over snow banks to get on the bus hurt my belly. I also slipped and fell hard on the ice several times. This time I am going to be pregnant over the summer. But reading this made me question whether it that might actually be worse! Luckily we have AC!

Can someone link to the frozen face roller? That sounds so good!

PBobs · 19/04/2019 23:24

I live where it's 35+ at the moment and 75% humidity. I don't like the humidity as I'm already finding breathing tricky but the heat is fine. Lots of cotton sundresses for me. I'm going to a country in the Med to give birth in June so it'll be hot but not too bad. I'm finding the heat OK but I guess it's what you're used to.
