I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Here I am too, found out I was pregnant last week, since then I have been throwing up consistently, called 111 yesterday and they said go to UCC. Went to UCC for fluids - while running to the toilet every 5 mins to throw up bile again. It took them 4 hrs to give me anti sickness medication via IV, cannula wasn't in properly and it was causing me pain, so they had to recannulate to try and put some fluids in me, only for them to give up after 30 mins and 10 different punctures as they couldn't find a good vein.. I was sent home with 1 (only 1!) tablet of Ondansetron and that was it. But I am just dumbfounded as how they let me go home after I've been without fluids for over 24 hrs at that point, even after the anti sickness the water was still making me throw up. I came home and licked my water bottle as anything more than that would trigger me again!

Was also able to get a prescription for Ondansetron and cyclizine after calling ooh when I came home...

I am now hiding in the darkness in my room trying to will myself to eat some sesame crackers.. frubes have been helping me. Yes the petit fillous in a tube, frozen, have been magical goodness... that is until I start being violently ill again and it comes out through my nose.. but it does help 🤷🏼‍♀️

DeadDoorpost · 29/06/2019 15:25

shelves try tinned mango slices or the juice from them. They helped me last pregnancy and at the beginning of this pregnancy too

As for me now, it's way too hot here in Kent and I'm feeling really sick. Having a glass of water every hour to keep fluids up, ice poles are also helping, but I still feel sick and uncomfortable. DS is loving it though outside even though he's ginger but he's drenched in sun cream and water

putputput · 29/06/2019 20:01

Did you manage to get fluids dead? Good that you're home now. This heatwave is pretty awful when you're struggling to keep hydrated anyway.

Shelves that's really appalling treatment from your hospital. Madness that you were given one ondansetron tablet!!

LucindaE · 29/06/2019 20:54

Shelvesoutofbooks Welcome. My goodness, that sounds like medical negligence. Why didn't they at least give you an injection of Ondansetron or Cyclizine? You are too ill to take action now, but I do think later on you might wish to complain via the AHA. The fact that your veins were collapsed shows high dehydration. I am glad you have got Ondansetron and Cycliizine, usually an effective combination. A good anti acid like Ranatadine and Omprazole can make a big difference. Also, on Ondansetron you will need a laxative. Good suggestion from DeadDoorPost about tinned mango. Here is my usual spiel about fluids and foods: Flat full sugar coke, ice lolllies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucoazade, fizzy orange, lemonade, Robinson's fruit drinks, Dr Pepper, orange squash, tonic water, Elderflower water, Elderflower coridal and tonic water (eallison's tipple), soda water, Iron Bru, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), orange juice (if not too acid) and 7Up. For foods of a sort, nibbles of chips and crisps, cheap ice cream, tinned fruit, slices of melon and mango, biscuits, baked potatoes, Scotch pancakes and cuppa soup.
DeadDoorPost Did they give you any fluids yesterday? I do feel for you all in this heat. Glad at least LO is enjoying it.

DeadDoorpost · 29/06/2019 21:07

Lucinda putputput I didn't get fluids in the end as I wasn't classed as bad enough for them. But I'm dying in this heat but drinking plenty

Teddyreddy · 29/06/2019 22:36

Sorry to hear you are all struggling. I've had a week at DM's with the DC, and have found taking it easy has really helped with the nausea, unfortunately there really isn't am option to take it easy at home with 2 DC. We're back at home today and have essentially spent the whole day inside because the heat makes me feel so nauseous, I'm so glad it's supposed to be cooler again tomorrow!

@Shelvesoutofbooks in addition to Lucinda's list I've found really heavily iced drinks are much easier to drink - as in 3/4 fill the glass with ice.

LucindaE · 30/06/2019 17:31

DeadDoorpost Sorry you didn't get fluids.Your symptoms certainly sounded as if you needed them.
Teddyreddy That is an interesting tip. I'll have to add that one to the fluids recommendations, besides advocadoo's 7up. I am glad you got a rest.
At least it isn't so hot today.

Hi everyone, can I join you? 3rdHG pregnancy, this time with twins. Currently 20 wks. Have been off work since wk 6 and feeling terribly guilty. Stopped the multiple daily vomits at about wk 16 but the nausea is horrendous and I can barely do anything without stirring it up again. Picking the kids up from nursery is about my limit.
Feel utterly pathetic and am not getting much sympathy from my local mum friends as no one seems to get it. I took DS1 to a party so because they all saw me there they assumed I was better. They didn’t want to hear that I spent the next three days in bed. And I had just wanted to do something nice for him.

Is anyone else in the same boat? Has anyone been off their entire pregnancy? I am a surgeon but the sight of blood makes me puke at the moment, let alone the standing all day for long ops etc. So I know really that I can’t do my job but I just feel so bad.

Sorry you’re all here too. HG is utterly rubbish!!

composed · 01/07/2019 17:26

Hello all, sorry to hear so many are still suffering. The weather although nice doesn’t help those with hg, I ended up with a horrific migraine yestetday and ended up vomitting horribly last night after almost a week of nothing really puts you back.

Appletart I’ve been off since 6 weeks I am
now 18 was planning on going back in a months time but if I carry on feeling like I do then I doubt I will go back and end up taking early mat leave. Already spoken to my managers and they have suggested it if I am still unwell and will put me on a/l for as long as they can to delay mat leave. HG unfortunately if you push yourself too hard puts you back and you end up feeling worse!

How is everyone else? Lucinda hope you’re well. I agree with the suggestion re ice not only can I only drink ice cold drinks but my glass has to be filled with ice and i need a straw instead of the feeling of gulping it down.

LucindaE · 01/07/2019 18:05

appletart99 Welcome. Sorry for the lack of understanding. As you are a veteran, and a surgeon at that, I won''t come out with my usual 'have you got kesotix, as while they are not the best way of determining dehydration, A and E departments take the measurements seriously' and 'Flat full sugar coke, ice lollies and the juice of tinned fruit' spiel. We actually have, with you, FIVE SETS OF TWINS on the thread at the moment, though down to four this week, with 'calmercomber's arriving. Everyone is very helpful and supportuve on here, anyway. You mus tnot feel guilty about being too ill to work; you and the babies have to come first.
composed Sorry to hear of the migraine.

Wow appletart, a third HG pregnancy, with twins, and you’re a surgeon. Intense! Grin I’ve been off pretty much my whole pregnancy. Sickness started around 5 weeks when I was already on annual leave, I was due to go back to work just after 6 weeks pregnant and I didn’t go back. I’ve been off since, now 31 weeks and signed off for the remainder until I trigger maternity leave at 36 weeks. Several times I thought I might go back, but I wasn’t really thinking straight (!), I simply can’t work, not even part time, from home etc, I’m just not consistently well enough for work.

LucindaE · 02/07/2019 15:59

beforeihit30 Mother Hen is glad you remain signed off! Smile.
I hope appletart and everyone is coping.

Blii · 02/07/2019 19:06

Wow lots of twins. Exciting stuff. Congratulations Smile
I’ve not been on in a while. Nothing’s changed with me, I was sick this morning though, I’ve not actually been sick in a couple of weeks. But I’ve been ‘ok’ for the rest of the day. Getting by.
Only 2 and half more weeks of school and then the kids break up! Yay. And then a couple of weeks after that hopefully baby will arrive.
I’m just at that stage where I’m so fed up of it all now. I just cannot wait to feel better.
Sorry about the moany post. I hope everyone is ok.

Ribenaberriesgowoo82 · 03/07/2019 08:49

How strange, I too had a migraine Sunday. I woke up yesterday with no sickness. Like, at all. I couldnt put my finger on what felt different. When I realised, I called my midwife in a panic as this was exactly now my miscarriage was discovered. She has got me booked in for an early scan tomorrows but I am pleased (??) to say the sickness started up again yesterday evening and hasn't gone away since.

I am still managing the HG by bed rest rather than medication. I just can't stand the thought of feeling as bad as I did being on the meds a couple of weeks ago. I am managing to eat cheese on toast and drink capri suns. Just 2 slices a day and that doesn't always stay down but it does mean my ketones stay at traces rather than the 4+.

Best wishes to you all.

beforeIhit30 · 03/07/2019 12:19

Yay Blii, we’re in a similar spot, as in 3 weeks of school left then hopefully baby about 4-5 weeks later. Sorry to hear you still get some sickness but you’re getting close now to the end and hopefully with that some relief (despite birth, recovery, newborn etc).

Ribena it’s an intense time for you, but it is good to hear you managing to eat and drink some (even if it doesn’t always stay down), and feel in a bit of a better place than before. Hopefully this continues and you can keep improving, through your own management or a different medication or whatever works best for you.

Lucinda I’ve well and truly resigned from trying to go back to work! I emailed colleagues yesterday as I realised they won’t all know how things are going, obviously my line manager isn’t walking around giving everyone personal updates on me! So I thought it made sense to let them know I’m fine, but can’t work, and see you some time in 2020 Grin

I seem to be quite stable in my current pattern, can’t do too much but can generally avoid horrible nausea and vomiting by being gentle, and still down to 2x cyclizine daily rather than 3x. But I now have other general heavily pregnant issues! I walk slower and it’s harder to get comfortable sitting down, I’ve got heartburn (urgh), and I keep waking up throughout the night. Oh well, only 8 weeks to go!

LucindaE · 03/07/2019 20:28

Bili Sorry about setback this morning - it's good that you've been doing more or less reasonably for the last two weeks. Feel free to moan! Who wouldn't want to?

Ribenaberriesgowoo82I know how it is if you have had an mmc before - it makes you so nervous about any reduction in symtpoms that you can't , which is dismal. It is brave of you to try and do witihout meds; but if it gets too much, it is worth bearing in mind that you almost certainly won't react to others as you did to Cyclizne, and I am sure the doctor would be able to work out something that made things better rather than worse.

beforeihit30 It was nice of you to think of your colleagues. Did you say you were a teacher? Or was it bili or both? The waddling about is grim.
Much sympathy for all who have had migraines. They are bad enough when one doesn't have Hyperemesis...
I hope everyone is coping in the heat today.

Hi everyone. So last night I was woken by an awful headache and aching all over. I assumed I was getting a cold so took some paracetamol. A few hours later I started being sick and couldn't keep anything down. I've just tested my ketones and they're 3+ Do you think I should phone my GP or the EPU? I'm thinking it may be a bug rather than the HG so not sure if I should wait it out or not. I've not been admitted before. Hope you're all doing okay x

DeadDoorpost · 05/07/2019 11:07

Clare can you get hold of your midwife and see what she suggests? I'd go to EPU rather than GP as you're more likely to be seen there

Shelvesoutofbooks · 05/07/2019 15:28

Does anyone else find that ondansetron makes them vomit? It's worked for me for a few days but yesterday and today it would make me vomit it straight back up. Cyclizine did this today too. I am so hungry and really want to order pizza but cheese is my main aversion at the moment :(

beforeIhit30 · 05/07/2019 15:54

Lucinda not a teacher, but I work in the public sector (but I think we probably get much better treatment than teachers tbh!).

Clare you poor thing. I would speak to whomever you can speak with soonest, so if that’s EPU then I would give them a call. I got an awful but in my last pregnancy and just rode it out (was too ill to think of doing anything else! Just trying to get by!), afterwards my doctor said whilst they’re pleased I was ultimately fine to please get in touch if that happens again, to avoid dehydration, check for infection etc.

It is indeed very warm. The best place to be for is is indoors, blinds down, fans on! It’s so much more comfortable than going outside (for DH too, not just me). Basically I’m good with blue skies and 20C for summer Grin once the Celsius starts to increase it no longer feels like going out weather!

Had some mild cramping yesterday evening, definitely nothing serious, no ‘contractions’, more a typical third trimester discomfort. But was a very real reminder of how far along we’re getting. Had to go to bed early with some paracetamol. DH and I had gone out yesterday by bus and I found the journey quite uncomfortable, too hot on the bus (much cooler off the bus!) but also hard to sit comfortably, so I think that might have contributed as I found certain exertion caused Braxton Hicks in my second pregnancy in the third trimester. So, no more bus journeys Smile

DeadDoorpost · 05/07/2019 16:46

@Shelvesoutofbooks I found that happened when I had a UTI. Didn't show any symptoms of one but I had one anyway. Can you phone the GP or head to hospital about it? Losing fluids in this heat is dangerous
