6 week brown spotting ? Pay for private early scan

Long back story here but the basics are it's taken us 19 months, a million blood tests, OH semen analysis, laparoscopy, rubella jab, many, many tears to get our very first BFP on Sunday 😊 I couldn't believe it so retested on Tuesday and BFP again 😊

So I'm 6 weeks today and at lunch time I got some brown spotting when I went to the loo. I'm absolutely terrified 💔

I phoned the fertility unit who told me to speak to gynae assessment. They weren't very interested. Said you can't really see anything on a scan until 7 weeks (not what I've read on here!?!). Said it's not uncommon to bleed in pregnancy and not too concerning if only light.

Im thinking of paying for an early reassurance scan. It's £59. Am I being crazy? Honestly I feel like I'm getting my period. No real preg symptoms. I did one digital test and another that you get a cross when preg and both were very obviously positive.

What should I do??

@Ells0204 well it's just turned red ☹️

Op you can spot for loads of reasons.

Try and keep calm if you can. You will pick up a heart beat at 6w1d.

Lunaxoxo · 31/03/2019 19:46

Hey OP
I’m 11+4 and had brown spotting too don’t worry it’s really normal, had a private scan and didn’t regret it. So worth just knowing.. although after about a week the worry kicks back in again.
Now I’m nearing my 12 weeks I’m starting to relax alot more.. it’s natural to worry esp after everything you’ve gone through to conceive
Good luck

squirrelnutkins1 · 31/03/2019 23:11

Thanks both. I've had a lot of brown tonight, enough to wear a sanitary towel. Did you ever have that much? Feeling pretty hopeless. I heard it's more like 7-8 weeks for heartbeat?

If it’s getting a little heavier or turning red can you contact a GP and get a referral to your nearest early pregnancy unit? Or phone them yourself? Sorry if you’ve already mentioned anything about this I can’t remember the whole thread from yesterday if you posted anything about that.

Generally the hospital should scan you if it’s a medical concern you might have to be a bit pushy though! X

Ells0204 · 01/04/2019 08:54

Sorry I’ve just read back you phoned them and they weren’t very interested! I would honestly push a little harder or better if you can get an emergency appointment with your GP today and get a referral. No reason you should have to pay privately, I personally feel! I think this is a medical concern and you should be seen.

squirrelnutkins1 · 01/04/2019 09:12

Managed to get a gp appointment for this morning 🙏🏻 will see what he says. He's the practice lead so hopefully that'll hold some sway.

Op I’ve done some sonograph training. You can see a heart beat from 6w1d - you have to be spot on wity your dates though.

Good luck ! Let us know how you get on

missteddy · 01/04/2019 09:37

I had a reassurance scan at 7 weeks and at 17 weeks, it was so worth it for me as the stress of worrying made me worry for my baby even more, all was fine and I'm due next month!
Get the scan! It's amazing seeing the little bean at 7 weeks BearSmile

I justified the cost by the fact that I was saving a bunch of money on wine as I wasn't drinking! Haha

squirrelnutkins1 · 01/04/2019 11:08

Gp said it's very very common.
He said HCG should double every 48 hours in pregnancy so I've got to have it checked today and Wednesday and he told me to just rest for a few days until we know what's what.
I feel slightly better but until the end of the week I'll be worrying I'm sure.

I like your reasoning re wine lol!!!

He said a scan wouldn't really show much at this stage. Going by my last period I'm 6w+4. I'll probably book a private one to be honest.
Thanks for replying to me

@squirrelnutkins1 thats a shame my GP sent me for a scan at 5 weeks! Xx

Ells0204 · 01/04/2019 14:16

I was 5+4 and EPU said they’d scan me but the only appt they had was 3 days later so I would have been 6 on the dot. It was all too late for me by that point though. The dr and the hospital seem a bit blasé in my opinion! If a private scan really is your last resort then I would go for it OP! By the time you’ve booked it and got a date I don’t see a reason why you wouldn’t be far enough along to see something and hopefully hear a heartbeat! Good luck and please update x

secretnames · 01/04/2019 14:29

Op i spotted loads in my first pregnancy so much so that i paid for two private scans secretly from DH but i've got to be honest they brought me so much reassurance and i saw a heartbeat at 6weeks if you can afford it i'd say defo do it it's not worth sitting and worrying yourself sick
Good luck xx

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/04/2019 14:33

I had the same and my ds is going off to uni this yearSmile

Personally I wouldn't have scans , I would sit it out and try and relax even though that is easier said than done Flowers

squirrelnutkins1 · 01/04/2019 14:54

Thanks for your replies.
I'm bleeding quite a lot of red blood, just feels like I'm on my period.
I'll find out by Friday from the blood tests if things are ok.
Gp has told me to just rest. Easier said than done tho.

I've got a private scan booked for 12 days time which will hopefully make me 8 weeks but we'll see. Thought it best to leave it to give me every chance of seeing a heartbeat.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/04/2019 14:55

That sound a like good plan OP, all the best x

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 01/04/2019 15:41

I hope everything is ok OP. I had the brown blood in one of my pregnancies and a tiny bit of red and everything was ok. I was given an internal exam to check my cervix was closed and internal scan at 6 weeks 0 days, which showed a heartbeat, so I don't understand why they aren't doing more for you. Good luck for your scan x

squirrelnutkins1 · 01/04/2019 17:39

Yeah I'm not sure why. He just said everything's really small at the mo. Glad you had a happy ending 😊. Got the feeling mine won't be but I'll do all I can on my part, which really there isn't a lot I can do, but doc said to rest so I'll do that.

Hi OP, just wanted to let you know that I'm going through almost the exact same thing at the moment. I'm 5+6 today - had some brown spotting on Friday but wasn't too worried. Then bright red blood all day yesterday. I wore a pad and it was like my period, but on one of the light days. Today, red spotting.

Yesterday I was convinced it was a loss - today I'm doubting myself, because surely I've not bled enough, and I've not had any pain with it. Pregnancy test still showing a strong positive, but the symptoms I was having seem to have gone - but I am still pretty tired, but maybe that's just from the emotional turmoil of the past 2 days! I have no idea if I'm still pregnant or not and hate being in limbo. I'm waiting it out, rather than going to the doctor, since there's so little they can tell at this point and I'll struggle to get time off work without arousing suspicion.

Good luck for your blood test results on Friday.

squirrelnutkins1 · 01/04/2019 21:47

I'm so sorry @PowerslidePanda its absolutely sucky isn't it. Feeling sooo helpless. Absolutely nothing we can do but wait ☹️
I'm 99% sure I'm no longer preg but will see Friday.
Test will still show positive for a while even after a loss so I'm not bothering testing any more.

OP posts:
PowerslidePanda · 01/04/2019 22:01

Thanks - yes, it is. If I'm honest with myself, I don't think I'm pregnant any more either - but part of me is still clutching at straws. You're right about tests continuing to show positive for a while, but I figure the line will eventually get fainter. Probably not helping myself by repeatedly testing to check though!

squirrelnutkins1 · 01/04/2019 22:10

Let me know how you get on. Sticky vibes to us both xx

OP posts:
PowerslidePanda · 02/04/2019 19:24

Thanks - bleeding slightly more heavily today, but still much lighter than Sunday. Some tiredness and nausea and still getting a strong positive when I test. I know there are lots of legitimate reasons you can bleed in pregnancy, like damage to your cervix, but I figure that would be similar to the blood if you cut your finger. What I'm getting is very definitely menstrual blood, which surely can't mean everything's ok.

How are you doing today?

squirrelnutkins1 · 02/04/2019 19:54

I've had a lot of heavy red period like blood today and awful pain during the night. I'm convinced it's bad news ☹️
Sorry you're still bleeding ☹️ are you still just going to wait it out? Xx
