I hate the smell of my house

Hi

This may sound odd but I HATE the smell of my house. I think my partner thinks i am mad as he can’t smell anything. I walk in the house (which i now dread), and smell a horrible musty smell. It’s hard to describe but i hate it. Then i walk into the living room and that makes me heave. Even my bedroom has a horrible nasty musty smell. I’ve now bought some Yankee Candle fragrance spheres which i move from room to room just so I can smell something nice (although it is a very strong raspberry smell!)

Is anyone else experiencing this? It’s making me want to move house. I know that’s drastic, maybe it’s the hormones Grin

Yes, I hate the smell of my house in particular though no one else can smell anything. Currently hate the smell of my partner and my dog and keep accusing my partner of all sorts of smells he reckons he isn't making. I hate the smell of pretty much anything, can't tolerate any sprays or chemicals to cover it up so I just have every window open near constantly.

TrySinging · 23/03/2019 22:22

God, I remember that. It was absolutely bloody awful. It will pass and your house will be filled with little baby smells instead. Hang in there! Thanks

RoomForMore · 23/03/2019 22:22

I didn't like the smell of our conservatory when pregnant with DC2. So I bought a pomegranate diffuser and boak boak boak it was awful. I'd rather have had the original smell, and 2.5 years later I can't sniff pomegranate products Blush so I sympathise with the crazy hormones and how they make us feel!!

ineedaholidaynow · 23/03/2019 22:27

I had this. It is your hormones. I didn't know I was in early stages of pregnancy when we moved house. When we had been looking round it, I had no problems. But as soon as we moved in it had an awful smell. DH thought I was mad. I used to feel sick as soon as I opened the front door to come in. Once I realised I was pregnant it made a bit more sense.

I also hated the smell when I opened the fridge. Couldn't stand the smell of DH's toothpaste, and narrowly avoided throwing up on DH when he dared to breathe near me after eating a curry Shock

Luckily, after the first trimester it did get easier. Although 14 years on, I do have phases when I am super sensitive to smell. Not sure what triggers that.

Amy326 · 23/03/2019 22:29

I had this with both my pregnancies, there were sooo many smells I hated, my dh thought I was mad! Things like washing powder (a smell I usually love) and soap were just repulsive to me. It was awful. It seemed to settle down a bit later on in pregnancy and then truly disappeared once I’d given birth. Very odd and a really hard thing to live with but once the baby is here you will just be intoxicated with their amazing smell and all will be forgotten (almost!)

Fortheloveofscience · 23/03/2019 22:29

Oh god OP me too I figured I just had a super-stinky house Blush. I’ve been frantically washing al soft furnishings for weeks trying to work out what’s making me heave but still no improvement.

AutumnGlitterBall · 23/03/2019 22:30

I hate the smell of my house and opening my fridge makes me boak even though I watched DH wash it out with bleach and put all the opened items into Tupperwares boxes. I have a plug in thing in the hall and a couple of fragranced candles in other rooms but I’m starting to go off them as well so mostly I just open the windows and make it freezing. I console myself with the fact that the house will smell of baby sick and shit soon and the musty smell will be the least of my worries!

DramaAlpaca · 23/03/2019 22:36

I'd consigned this to the back of my memory as it was a long time ago, but yes I remember having this when I was expecting DC1 . Everything smelled horrible, including my lovely house and sometimes my lovely DH It was only for about the first five months, when everything was making me heave, then it wore off. I didn't get it in my second & third pregnancies, thank God.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 23/03/2019 22:40

I was convinced our sofa stank of sweaty bum during early pregnancy with dc2. I borrowed a carpet and upholstery cleaner, organised a babysitter for dc1 and made DH spend a Friday evening painstakingly washing the sofa cushions.

Complete waste of time. House still “stank” until I was about 12 weeks, but at least the sofa was really clean.

NannyPear · 23/03/2019 23:03

I'm convinced I smell dog pee in DS's room, despite the fact I can't source it to a particularly spot on the carpet and the dogs aren't actually allowed in that room. It has a baby gate so they can't even get in Hmm DH says he can't smell anything.

I never had a smell issue with DS but this time round I can't stomach much at all!

Pea2019 · 23/03/2019 23:11

This really made me giggle.

Good to know I am not alone! Sweat is actually a good shout, that’s exactly what it smells like! I have a musty sweaty smelling house Grin. First pregnancy and at this rate, with the smelling issues and nausea, it will be my last! Smile

I had something similar. Everything (including the dog) smelt like warm dust.

Chocolate35 · 23/03/2019 23:20

It will definitely pass. After 5 years of being a dog owner I was convinced the house suddenly smelt of dog. I open windows, burn incense, the lot. My husband found it hilarious. I’m pleased to say I’ve been reassured my house smells lovely. You’ll laugh about this one day.

mcjx · 23/03/2019 23:21

I couldn't stand the smell of my kitchen in my early pregnancy, it was so weird! I used to heave every time I went in there.

But that soon passed, think it's just hormones etc Smile

Spargle · 24/03/2019 00:29

I bought a lovely washing up liquid in a fancy dispenser a little before getting pregnant. When the morning sickness started, it suddenly smelled repulsive, so DH ended up doing most of the washing up, and I banned him from using it.

My morning sickness is mostly gone now. I smelled it again the other day, and could appreciate that it was a good smell again. Still hate it. DH used it again a couple of days later, and I had to leave the kitchen. I’m hoping that it will get better when the baby’s born...

Burtiebojangles · 24/03/2019 05:07

Oh, yeah. 7 months in and there’s still some rooms in this house that make me physically sick with the smell. The hallway is disgusting, the kitchen is vile, I can’t even sit in the living room and the bedroom stinks. Don’t even get me started on the en-suite after the shower has been on.

I bought loads of air fresheners that I had to unplug because the smell is rancid. I can’t wear perfume and struggle with deodorant because of the smell, but also hate the smell of myself??

I had to move desks at work because I could smell the persons breath who sat opposite me.

I hate the smell of washing, clean clothes make me sick. I’ve got a collection of about 15 fabric conditioners but they all make my clothes smell the same, and when they’re hung up to dry, hideous!!!

We only moved in here a year ago but I’ve spent the best part of that year pregnant (2nd pregnancy first baby) so all I associate this house with is smell (and neighbours who park in front of my house, the raaage) so I hate it. My husband refuses to sell it (yes, I’ve asked... several times) so I convinced myself to play the lottery so we can just buy another one. The joys of pregnancy! 😂

Pushing a watermelon out of a bagel sized hole sounds absolutely delightful in comparison to having the nose of a blood hound. I cannot wait to give birth!!!! Haha.

snoopy18 · 24/03/2019 05:42

I had the same issue haha went away now baby is here 😊 candles everywhere OP!

FraggleRocking · 24/03/2019 06:02

I’ve been going through this recently and it’s so frustrating! I kept washing the sofa covers and anything else movable in the hopes it’d go away but nope. Glad to hear there is light at the end of the road.

Sunny1990 · 24/03/2019 06:56

I had this it was the worst!!! 28 weeks now and 90% gone thank god! It drove me round the bend, I hated being at home and it made me hate the house so much. It passes though and you'll soon be happy at home again :)

WeeBean · 24/03/2019 09:03

Eugh, this drive me absolutely mad early on! We only moved here in August, it's a new build, there aren't really any smells never mind bad ones. I got pregnant and BAM! Could not stand the smell of our bedroom and ensuite. It was a minty, soapy, musky smell that no one else could smell but I lost count of the number of times I walked into that room and threw up. I dreaded going to bed but was also shattered all the time from constant nausea etc. Also freshly washed clothes!

27 weeks now and it's definitely got better but I still get hit with a minty, musky smell when I walk into our room, it's no where near as bad and we don't need to constantly burn candles any more. The bedroom window has been open 24/7 since November though 😂

Hope it gets better for you soon! I can't wait for baby to be here so this smell issue disappears!

katietilling92 · 30/11/2019 22:11

Hello all! Just wondering if anyone has had their babies yet from this post, and whether the smells went away for you?? I hate my house and have done for weeks (since finding out I'm pregnant) and I feel like I can't cope any more. Been staying at my mums when Hubby is on nights as I just don't want to be here! Please tell me there's a light at the end of the tunnel? X

sep30 · 30/11/2019 22:38

I'm EXACTLY the same. And have driven my husband nuts buying so many diffusers, the only thing that's helped is the plug in air freshener, the ambi pur ones with the three sprays, the Christmas smell one is so nice and have it set to max and it's honestly life changing, I come in the door and it smells nice like spiced apple, rather than musty! So weird as it only started once I got pregnant, but give them a go!

AFistfulofDolores1 · 30/11/2019 22:45

It should pass. I went through a phase of my partner's smell making me heave. Thankfully it only lasted about a week.

katietilling92 · 30/11/2019 23:17

See, I've tried all sorts of sprays, plug ins, candles etc and all they seem to do is make the musky smell slightly floral lol! Nothing covers it for me :'(
