38week induction experiences?

Rrxox · 21/03/2019 07:03

I’m technically 37+6, admitted last night and they were talking about inducing me today. Looks like I have or am getting pre eclampsia and baby’s estimated to be quite big so looks “well cooked” already head down and low.

Does anyone want to share their induction story? How long were you in afterwards? My inner HCA can’t sleep for beeping monitors and buzzers Grin and I miss the fur children already.. not sure about DP, no farting or snorings quite nice Grin

Ohhh, I can’t offer any help but they’re planning to induce me at 38 weeks (a week and a half’s time) so I’m watching with interest! With my DS I had a natural labour at 39 weeks with no issues so this is all new to me!
Hope it goes well and keep us posted x

fluffyunicorns86 · 21/03/2019 10:16

I was induced at 37 weeks with my eldest daughter as I had really bad pre eclampsia headaches, spots in eye vision, high blood pressure protein in urine I can remember how long I was in labour for but I know with her I was kept in for a couple of days think it was so they could keep an eye n us both.
I was induced at 38 weeks with my son as I had bad SPD with him, I went in on the Thursday and had him on the Saturday evening. You may get kept in if pre eclampsia as I think they like to monitor for a little while. (I may be wrong but I was kept in)

I had my boy 2 weeks ago tomorrow and had an amazing induction experience 💗

I have always been into positive thinking and mindset so would recommend The Positive Birth Company digital pack as it’s super insightful & informative amongst other things which I believe helped me during the labour and delivery :)

I’d had a few episodes of reduced movement with baby during the pregnancy and Thursday was the 5th time I had been in. After being checked and monitored the consultant advised we should go ahead with the induction if I felt comfortable doing so since I’d had so many episodes.

I felt it was the right thing to do and I was almost at 38 weeks so quite in the safe zone if there ever is one!

Went home & packed my bags and hubby came in with me.

They put the pessary in at 8:30pm right before hubby left and shortly after, I felt changes in my body ie the cramping started from back to front.

As it’s my first time I didn’t know what was going on but thought yeah this is probably the surges / contractions!

Come midnight I requested pain relief - wanted to keep it minimal so had paracetamol. Around 4am I could feel the surges or contractions getting stronger and more frequent and was given a form of codeine which helped.

Come morning time the surges or contractions were definately more but still manageable.

I was monitored again at around 9am and the pulse rate was scatty still for baby and myself.

The doctors were in with nurses etc and they did another cervix check and was advised it’s best to remove the pessary as the surges were coming in frequently but not consistently.

This was the worst part of the whole process - cervix being checked whilst having surges- not going to lie I was in tears during this.

As soon as the pessary was out, I was taken downstairs to the delivery suite.

Queue the gas and air! Oh my god it was heaven as soon as I was on this 😂 I could have a proper conversation between surges! It was funny 😂

Turns out I was already at 6cm dilated.

They said they’ll observe me after 4 hours - I laughed and said there’s no way the baby will still be in me in 4 hours 😂 just knew it from the way I was feeling. Amazing what your body knows!

Shortly after, my waters were broken by docs & it felt amazing 😂 I remember saying to hubby and midwife ‘OMG this feels amazing I feel so light’!

Soon as waters were gone they did more checks and I got off the bed and was moving around using the exercise ball on the bed to lean on and get me through the surges. Yoga really helped me through pregnancy and the exercise ball was absolutely the best thing ever during labour too! I used it on the bed to lean forward onto. Baby had been head down since 20 weeks or so 💗

I can’t explain how important breathing techniques are during the surges. Upbreathing and downbreathing was absolutely what got me through it all!

Soon as the waters had gone the surges were more intense of course as there’s no barrier.

Shortly after, my body was telling me to get the baby out - midwife had to of course do the checks to make sure it was time and I was right into it!

There was a few surges I had to breathe through and not breathe baby out which was challenging to control because my body was saying ‘let the baby out’ but soon as the midwife gave me the ok - my god the surges and breathing the baby out felt amazing!

I was on gas & air through the whole thing although doc offered pain relief I almost said yes to pethadine but my midwife said you don’t need it you’re doing amazing - this greatly helped me stay focussed and I passed on pthadine and stuck to gas & air.

The baby came into the world around 2pm so 1.5 hrs from being taken to delivery suite. I literally squatted him out and he almost went flying into the floor - thankfully midwife was ready and waiting 😂

I’ve had stitches but to be honest by that point you’re like ‘whatever I just breathed a baby out so do what you want 😂’

Honestly trust that your body is capable and knows exactly what to do and you will be fine.

Wishing you all the best for your labour and delivery 💗

I was induced around 38 weeks for polyhydramnios. It was fine but I have nothing to compare it to!
Had the 24hr pessary on the Tues morning, some cramping on the Wednesday morning then it fell out Blush and they replaced it with the 6hr one around lunchtime on the weds. Things started ramping up at tea time and I went down to the labour suite around 9pm to have my waters broken. I had diamorphine after that and it gets a bit hazy Grin I dilated quite quickly but DD was at an awkward angle and contractions slowed. I had the drip but although the contractions came back, I couldn't deliver her due to the angle, so it was into theatre for forceps/emcs. At this point I had a spinal and DD came out with the forceps.
I hope this doesn't worry you, I'm aware it sounds quite intervention heavy but honestly, it was fine. They kept a close eye on me and I felt looked after and listened to. Good luck!

Rrxox · 21/03/2019 11:12

@whatthefoxsaid Don’t worry about worrying me I’ll do that myself 😂. I’d rather see the more intense stories too than just the I coughed n the baby flew around the room after I looked at the pessary blogs I’ve seen 😂.

I’m getting the 6 hour pessarys 3x today none tomorrow and 3 again on Saturday if no progress between obviously. First one goes in in 15 minutes, so I don’t think I’ve enough time to take up hypnobirthing style things 😂. Id like to have but I thought I’d still have ages to go 😂, my antenatal class isn’t till next week.. might be a touch late.

Slightly different as mine was 36+6 and with twins but thought worth sharing anyway. I had been in hospital with pre eclampsia for 3 weeks.
Pessary did nothing so had another after 24hours, another 23 hours later I was 1cm so they started the drip and broke my waters. All fine.

I was then in labour for 21 hours, which again was absolutely fine. Twin 2 became distressed so they decided to give me an epidural and eventually decided they needed to come out pretty quickly so I had an emergency CSection although it really wasn't bad at all either, it was very calm and I was awake for it all.

It sounds horrific having inductions, 21 hours of labour and then an emergency section but I look back and think of it as a positive experience.

Both babies were absolutely fine other than being a little small (5lb1 and 5lb9) we had one night in NICU for the littlest one and then spent a week in special care. The twins were discharged after 3 days but my pre eclampsia hung around until day 6 so we all stayed in.

Best of luck to you!

whatthefoxsaid · 21/03/2019 11:26

When people ask me about my labour they end up looking a bit horrified and the midwife described it as traumatic but I didn't think it was that bad tbh. I might change my mind if I have another and it goes more smoothly mind!
It certainly hasn't put me off having another the sleep deprivation has done that
Hope things move quickly for you, I wasn't so keen on being in hospital and only stayed in for 36hrs after, I left as soon as the Dr gave me the all clear. I just wanted to be at home!
If you have time while waiting for the pessary to kick in, do Google some breathing exercises. They really helped me to use the gas & air effectively.

thingtwoandthingone · 21/03/2019 11:29

Hi, I was induced at 37+1 for complications related to my type 1 diabetes. They were worried about placental failure and after 5 days in hospital decided on induction.
I had my first pessary on Monday morning. The whole induction process was quite drawn out due to staff pressure so I didn't get my pessaries on time but after quite a lot of stop start contractions I went into labour proper overnight on Tues/Wednesday. DC was born at noon on Wednesday. Fairly straightforward delivery, gas and air. We left the next day (24 hours later) as they needed to check DC's blood sugars because if my diabetes. If I wasn't diabetic they did say I could have gone home 4 hours after the birth.
I know I was really lucky but wanted to share as early inductions can have good outcomes. I was terrified before as had only heard scare stories.

Rrxox · 21/03/2019 11:55

That’s the first one tucked firmly behind my tonsils.. and here dp was worried about sex, cervix was closed but soft if that means anything to anyone. Obviously I’m crampy and uncomfortable now but I’ve just had half a midwife up me so I’d say that was less drugs and more the “manoeuvre”.

Hopefully he decides to take note of his eviction notice 😂. I’ll look up breathing exercises, not to move for half an hour or so.

Glad to hear of people getting out decently quickly.. I’m a terrible patient 😂

I went in at 38wks for gestational diabetes. I had 24hours of induction, nothing happened, 24 hours off, then another 24 hours of induction. A thousand midwife hands up my fanjo. I never got passed 2cm dilated.

The hormones did a number on me though, I was crying and angry. My friends and fam kept asking for updates which put me in a complete panic. I threatened to go home as I couldn't take any more.

They persuaded me to stay the night and in the morning offered a c section. It was very easy after that.

MeMeMeYou · 21/03/2019 12:06

I was told - not sure if true - that if you have ore eclampsia your body tends to labour quicker as it knows it needs baby out?!

My first induction pre eclampsia was 36+6. I did have a lot of interventions - 3 protein pessaries, drip, waters broken, epidural etc. I had progressed to severe pre eclampsia and they wanted baby out . It was fairly unpleasant esp as I had to have an anti-fitting medication that made me feel unwell. But baby delivered vaginally and she was well and I recovered well but was quite shaken and tired from it all. Spent 6 days after in Hosp as my bp didn’t go down v quickly so they monitored me, and baby a bit small so needed to watch blood sugars and help with feeding.

I was induced 38+6 no ore eclampsia just precaution with my son and it was v v straightforward and easy. 1 prostin pessary and I was away! Quick labour, no stitches either, felt fab after.

MeMeMeYou · 21/03/2019 12:10

Also totally recommend downloading a hypnobirthing cd or similar to listen to. I credit my great second induction to listening to hypnobirthing on a loop for the four hours I was labouring for.

Rrxox · 21/03/2019 13:20

Already having strong painful cramps. Not sure if any of you ladies will remember or be the same one exactly but what colour was it?
I’ve just been for a wee and there was bloodish/bricky coloured dischargey bits in the loo and bloody looking staining on the loo roll/bed pad.

whatthefoxsaid · 21/03/2019 16:40

How's it going @Rrxox? Hope you're progressing.
Sounds like your plug has gone, hope the waters follow soon for you. I never saw my plug so can't advise I'm afraid!

Rrxox · 21/03/2019 18:37

Wasn’t mucusy but who knows what it was. Midwifes say it was normal, I’m contracting/tightening pretty hard.. still on first pessary as they don’t want to over stimulate me. So I’ve to wait till 10 to be rechecked. Cervix has thinned and I’ve dilated a little, she could feel his head and it wasn’t as uncomfortable as the first exam.. but then again maybe I knew what was coming

Induced at 37.5 weeks due to GD.

Went in 8am, bit of monitoring and waiting around.
24 hr pessary inserted around 10am
More monitoring

Then i walked, paced, wandered, roamed and explored the hospital for 24 hours, no sleep because it was hotter than the fires of Hades in there.

Was due to be checked at 10am the next morning but they were busy, had lunch about 12 then checked at 1pm and they were able to break my waters.

Everything started to kick off then, contractions ramped up, i kept up my pacing and wandering for an hour or so before deciding i should stick to the ward.

Around 6pm i told the midwife i needed to.push, she didnt believe me but said she'd take a look once her paperwork was finished. 10 mins later she had a look and saw a head.

All hands to the pump and i was wheeled to a delivery room, 1 big push and baby was born.

I had a little gas and air just before the pushing and while i was being stitched up.

Shower and then onto the ward. We stayed overnight and after me asking every 10 mins from 6am the next morning they let me leave at 8am with DD.

Embracethechaos · 21/03/2019 19:00

I was admitted at 37+3 as my waters flood broke. I was induced with the drip 5pm following day. Baby was not engaged before my waters broke and no water came out with the baby. It was painful, went for gas and air then epidural when it felt like I was constantly breathing it was it felt like no break between contractions. I fell asleep with the epidural, midwife woke me up asked to examine me in the early hours and I was fully dilated, pushed baby out on my back with legs in stirrup s, thinking this is wrong, NCT said forward and open pelvis. Haha. But turning into my side made baby's stats drop. Gave birth 230am 36+5

Embracethechaos · 21/03/2019 19:05

Physically, had catheter removed midday, recovered surprisingly quickly but stayed for a few days due to baby jaudlndice. She was nearly 7 pounds

LindaLa · 21/03/2019 19:06

Both of mine born the minute they hit 38 weeks due to preeclampsia.

I'd been in hospital since 36 weeks both times, so the second I was dressed I wanted home and was within 12 hours of birth for both.

Try to relax and let your body do what it has to!
Birth is the only cure for preeclampsia.

harrypotterfan1604 · 21/03/2019 19:09

I think you and me may be the same person 😂 I’m a HCA too and missed my doggies so much when I went in for induction haha
I won’t tell you my story because it’s traumatic however the trauma wasn’t from the induction it was because I became very unwell.
The induction although a long process was actually fine, the following 5 days on a ward were ok too really just I am a terrible patient so was going a bit crazy. That wasn’t down to a bad experience though just me hating being on the other side of it.

Wishing you lots of luck!

Rrxox · 21/03/2019 21:50

@harrypotterfan1604 we may well be the same person 😂, I haven’t got my marauders map boots on today though. They’re hoping he pops out before I become unwell as the pre e is still mild.

Waiting on the monitor again. Then it’ll be 6am if he doesn’t “slip out”.. DP really should have read atleast one page of a book about birthing 😂. Midwifes have assured him I won’t be waking up with the baby under my bum at 2am without some form of fuss first

weegiemum · 21/03/2019 21:56

I was induced at 36+6 with dd2, my third dc. Cervix was high and closed at the point the pessary was put in, but after 5-6 hours of walking round the ward I was effacing well. Induction was because I had kidney problems, and dd2 was looking ok on scans, but due to my ongoing pain relief they wanted her out.
She was born 12 hours after the first pessary, weighed in at 7lb13

Rrxox · 21/03/2019 23:45

Second pessary in, cervix has shortened up a lot almost at 2, so close to my waters being broken but so far 😂.
Next “check and pessary” unless my waters break or I’m in a lot of pain will be 6am..
disocovered what my discharge was, bloody show, which is still coming away since she swept me again to get him on the run 😂.
