Cassian.

For a boy.

Go on, I take it. I know you lot are no-holds-barred types.

I can take it, even.

is it a real name? what does it mean and what is its origin? do you have other children with unusual names?

Devonshire · 08/07/2007 17:41

hmmm, not sure, he might get called cassie, a bit of a girls name?

but it may be one of those names that grows on you...

mamimwnci · 08/07/2007 17:41

What does it mean? I think it sounds nice.

policywonk · 08/07/2007 17:43

I like it, although my bro had a uni friend called Cassian who was a right little so-and-so. (This probably will not be a terribly important consideration for you.) Also, I suspect a lot of people will want to say 'Caspian' instead so he might spend a lot of time correcting people.

(Am going to try the dress on tomorrow, BTW. Just in case you've been losing sleep.)

controlfreaky2 · 08/07/2007 17:43

ossian is a nice name. not sure about cassian. sounds a bit narnia-ish to me iykwim

Baysmum · 08/07/2007 17:44

I had been thinking of that for our LO if a boy (which I think it is). Used to teach a boy called Cassien (who was lovely) and I like it better than Cassius and cd be shortened to Cass or Cash! Nice

EricGallagher · 08/07/2007 17:45

I like it, it's strong.

Stargazing · 08/07/2007 17:50

do you know what policywonk, I HAVE been checking on the style thread for updates from you! And i was on a hens night in Covent Garden last night (grim, never again) And even checked the window of Dune for appropriate shoes for you!!

Okay - Cassian. It was the name of an early saint. Died a grisly death but didnt they all.

My other children names are:
Star Anielka (born/ died 16.04.05)
Phoenix Isabella (born 02.08.06)

So I guess they are unusual enough to carry a Cassian? Would give him William as second name.

Reasons to like it (apart from I like the way it sounds)
Patron saint of school teachers ( I like school, hope my kids will too)
Feast day is 29 Feb (rare date and date dh and I met)
Patron Saint of Mexico City (dh and I should be a wedding there when ds is due. And we had a great time there a few years ago, special memories)
I think it looks and sounds quite regal.
May get shortened to Cass, which was the real name of The Big Kahuna in Gidget. DH is avid surfer, I am Australian and like the surf link, tenuous though it is.

Your thoughts?

I quite like it and I generally hate names that start with a C/K sound.

LaDiDaDi · 08/07/2007 17:52

I like it but I think that I would have to try not to say Caspian iywswim.

Does it go with your surname and names of any other dc?

Miaou · 08/07/2007 18:08

Quite like it and I see you've got lots of reasons for choosing it. People will assume it's Caspian, though

SSSandy2 · 08/07/2007 18:08

Think Cassian sounds ok. Are you giving him a second name?

FrannyandZooey · 08/07/2007 18:12

Yes I like it, and I like "Cass" for short.

lulumama · 08/07/2007 18:18

it goes well with Phoenix

I am sorry that you lost your LO, star

stressteddy · 08/07/2007 18:18

I love it - v. unusual and doesn't sound too "made up" iykwim

Nbg · 08/07/2007 18:22

Made me think of Cassius Clay.

Was he some sort of boxer a squillion years ago?

Anyway, I quite like it. Bit different but not way out revolting madness different IYSWIM

TaylorsMummy · 08/07/2007 18:27

i prefer cassius

Stargazing · 08/07/2007 18:32

middle name would be William

Cassian William

I love the name Cassius (and love Cassius Clay) but its meaning is 'vain, empty' - not ideal. Also like caspar but there's the whole friendly ghost problem. Cassidy I like but too American, thanks to David and Butch.

So Cassian overcomes all these problems.

lulumama · 08/07/2007 18:34

i quite fancied caspar for a boy too...but the ghost thing put me off aswell!

LIZS · 08/07/2007 18:37

Knew one of that name but think it was with one s

MaccaMacca · 08/07/2007 18:39

yes and I like Cass too. Different but cool!
