Has anybody taken cyclizine for morning sickness?

Hi,

I am currently 6 weeks pregnant. I’ve bwen suffering from terrible morning sickness for the past week. I also have a 18 month old so I’m struggling really struggling. I went doctors and was prescribed cycziline. I didn’t want to take it but this morning I had enough and caved in and took it. I took it at 8am,I stopped being sick but still felt nauseous. I fell asleep at 10am and woke up and 2pm and felt drowsy the majority of the day. Luckily my oh is off work so he took care of our son but he has to go back to work on Monday. Has anybody else taken it and felt extremely drowsy and sleepy? Will that pass? The dr said to take 3 times a day but I would only like to take it once or twice.

I’ve been on it for about 4 weeks now.
I’m pregnant with number 3, and have a 3yo and a 2yo.
It stops me vomiting but I still get a few waves of nausea. I find that if I’m eating every couple of hours it help stave off the nausea a bit better.

Courtney10891 · 23/02/2019 18:45

Thanks for your reply. Does it make you drowsy though and fall asleep? X

Should have added, I am taking it 3 times a day.

MyBreadIsEggy · 23/02/2019 18:46

No drowsiness - just the general first trimester tiredness!

AppleKatie · 23/02/2019 18:47

It made me sleep an awful lot. When awake I was dizzy with double vision.

Yes it did stop the vomiting but no I definitely couldn’t function on it and it didn’t help the nausea at all.

Courtney10891 · 23/02/2019 18:47

I’m hoping that after a few days maybe the drowsiness would subside x

Applekatie - did you change to a different tablet and if you did did it work? X

Yes but to be honest it didn't touch the sides for me. When I had it in IV it seemed to work better but tablets did little for me. There is a great hyperemisis support thread on here, have a read of that for advice and support

RoseReally · 23/02/2019 18:51

It made me very drowsy too. I only realised that after the second time I took it, both times I had a three hour nap! Luckily both times was at the weekend when my DH was home to mind DD. I'm sure it does make you drowsy but I also wonder whether the break from nausea makes it a bit easier to sleep too?!

lolaflores · 23/02/2019 18:52

I had it for pregnancy and lost op nausea.
Works a treat every time and saved my sanity with dd2. I didn't carenuf I felt a bit out of it. I wasn't spewing.

stealthbanana · 23/02/2019 18:53

It made me drowsy so used metoclopramide instead. Then added the cycliZine back and weirdly didn’t get the drowsy effect when it was taken in combination with the metoclopramide. Defo go back to the doctor if it’s making you sleepy - there are other options.

Seeline · 23/02/2019 18:54

It stopped most of the nausea, and I was only sick a few times which was a vast improvement on my first pregnancy. But yes, I did feel like a zombie the whole time I took it. I think I just did morning and evening.

Courtney10891 · 23/02/2019 18:54

Do you think maybe if I took one at night time before bed they would maybe make me less drowsy and last for the next day? X

My advice would be to ask for ondansetron -it's hugely effective with no side effects (for me) - it's also more expensive do not s first line option but worth pushing for to get you through. Good luck!

Teddyreddy · 23/02/2019 18:57

I'm taking it, along with various other drugs, started after the cyclizine when it wasn't enough by itself any more (hyperemesis). It made me drowsy and muffle headed for the first week or so but did then settle. If it's helping with the nausea I'd give it a few more days.

I've had to take it 3 times a day and am only now at 16 weeks starting to cut back - it's less effective if you take it less often. What time of day is the nausea worst? For me it's early morning and late afternoon and if it's the same for you you could try 2 tablets a day with none at midday?

MyBreadIsEggy · 23/02/2019 19:01

I remember with my first pregnancy I was given metaclopramide which was just one tablet a day, and seemed to work. But then I had a day where the sickness seemed to come back with vengeance and I was hospitalised and pumped full of IV cyclising which was absolute bliss! It was the first time I’d felt normal in the whole time of been pregnant. Happened a few more times after that too.
Luckily the sickness with the second pregnancy wasn’t quite as severe as that, and doesn’t appear to be this time around. But before I started the medication, I was vomiting up to 20 times a day. It was hideous. I’ve vomited twice since I’ve been on the cyclizine which is a massive difference!

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 23/02/2019 19:01

They made me very drowsy. I don't drive or handle machinery so it wasn't a massive problem. They took the edge off the nausea (therefore stopping me from vomiting so much) but didn't take it away. It meant that i didn't have a full, normal meal until baby arrived - but I survived. As an injection cyclizine was quite a scary trip.

There is other medication -ondasetron I think it's called? - which they can give you. I think it's more effective but more expensive so doctors are more reluctant to prescribe it.

Good luck Smile

After several things I eventually settled on Metoclopromide 3x day, dropping to 1 a day by the final few weeks. It was for me better. Nothing cleared the nausea though.

BikeRunSki · 23/02/2019 19:33

Cyclizine tablets did nothing for me. I wound up in hospital with hyperemisis, where I had IV cyclizine, which was very trippy!

First of, Stemitil for me back on my feet enough to leave hospital. Second time it was metroclopromide.

IamMoana · 23/02/2019 19:42

Yes, pretty much up until the end. It helped the physical act of being sick but the nausea remained. It at least helped me function. I didn't feel drowsy at all though. Hope you feel better soon, it really is the pits.

Justus22 · 23/02/2019 20:09

I tried it but it did nothing for me. I still have nausea now at 21 weeks, only occasionally sick now though at least x

MeredithGrey1 · 23/02/2019 20:33

I’m on this, and yes when I first started taking it it totally wiped me out. I took my first one with breakfast and half an hour later had fallen asleep on the sofa while my other half was loudly hoovering that room. This definitely passed in a couple of days though and I was able to take 3 a day without being excessively drowsy - I was more tired than usual but not massively and I don’t know if that was the cyclizine or general first trimester fatigue.

MeredithGrey1 · 23/02/2019 20:35

Meant to add as well that I’m now 23 weeks and still take one a day in the morning, and depending how I’m feeling sometimes take one in the evening as well, and drowsiness isn’t a problem at all.

DC3dilemma · 23/02/2019 20:40

I took it for about 4 weeks. It did make me very drowsy but sleeping through the nausea was a blessed relief.

Orangehandtowel · 23/02/2019 20:47

I couldn't take them.. I was so drowsy on them and I attempted a few times.

I ended up on ondansetron and they were amazing!
