double buggy or not?

what are the thoughts of a double buggy/pram? have just found out last week i'm PG with no 2 - I'm assuming around 6 weeks ish as not 100% on dates, DB would be due around the time DS is 2 - 2.1 at most. he's walking a lot now likes to walk places, but obv also gets tired and likes to sleep in the buggy.

I would absolutly love a M&P 3 in 1 or something similar. do buggy borads work with those? realistically how much walking will a 2 year old do (i'm thinking if we go into town etc). I have a budget of approx £200. so would need to ebay it - don't like P&T's so they're out. any thoughts at all?

(i'm a reg but perm name changer after a few RL isnances. - if you recognise me please don't mention it) thanks.

will come back tomorrow this whole tired thingy is really kicking in now.

Well my DD was 2.9 when my DS came along and I am so glad I got a double buggy!

When we do the school pick up, both the baby and DD may fall asleep in the car and I would be stuck if I did not have the double as I could not carry one or other of them and push the buggy etc.

Actually, I did do that with the eldest as I thought I could manage without a double but when my eldest started pre-school, I would end up pushing him in the buggy and carrying DD in a sling but she was heavy.

Also if you go out on daytrips then kids can't walk around all day and there are times you might want to strap the older one in. Buggy boards are a good idea in theory but I found them a pita as you kick them when you walk and the child holding on usually has the pushchair handle right where there head is and if they are tired they don't want to stand up either.

hi ow82 I think I'm stalking you tonight, I will have 2.1 or 2 months between DD2 and DB3 I am definitely getting a double buggy but I'm getting a P&T's. They are not ideal but I like the idea of being able to swap between a double and a single, I also will have 3.8yo DD1 walking so don't fancy having to chase after 2 of them so it will be nice to have DD2 contained. I have 18 months between the DDs so a double was essential and it's only in the past 3 months DD1 has started to walk everywhere. I had a M&P Twin Aria which I hated and a Graco Tandem which is better but still not that great but I think that's par for the course for doubles.

ow82 · 05/07/2007 22:34

thanks for your reply WCL - that was my thought that DB could go in a sling of sorts. possibly, but I really have my heart set on a 'proper' pram this time and not a travel system. so would really only want that for when baby was small - can you get doubles which have a carry cot and a chair side? i'm not sure how much DH will want me to get a double as we would like to encourage DS's walking, but as you sa if we're out for the day then him walking will not happen. good job I have another 8 months or so!

lol. don't worry kitty - this time thou i'm really off! lol - i've had a break for the past 3/4 weeks and am coming back all in one go! lol - I knew there was a reason I signed to other parenting sites - they're not as addictive!

OP posts:
ow82 · 06/07/2007 08:21

any other thoughts? esp if you know any buggy's which hold a carry cot as well.

OP posts:
chopster · 06/07/2007 08:41

jane twin 2, mountain urban, and first wheels city twin all hold carry cots, but are very very £££. Or you could consider gettign a double proper pram like the emmaljunga, if you have your heart set on a proper pram.

Some places still do the toddler seat that sits upon a carrycot, so it might be worth looking at that too.

ow82 · 06/07/2007 09:04

chop - would that still work the emma for a toddler? (i've only seen those with big carry cots for twins really) and DS will nap in his pram but only if we'rte out oif that makes sence - otherwise he's a nosey monkey!

i'm assuming i'd be able to find those buggy's on ebay? or do they hold their value well?

nearlythere · 06/07/2007 09:13

might be worth doing an ebay search on first wheels twin- there is an older version with one seat and a carrycot- then later turns into 2 seats, it was 3 wheeler and one of the bigger companies on there was flogging them off at £150 inc carrycot brand new!

naughtymummy · 06/07/2007 09:30

Do n't know if this will help you, but I had a big 3 wheeler (single) and could put them both in it together side by side until recently. DS is now 3.3 DD 9m . I did this from when she was 4m and they loved it, used to cuddle up and go to sleep together. Now he sits on the front if he gets tired. So i didn't have to get a proper double. When she was tiny I used pram and buggy board but he hated it. Sometimes used a stroller and sling but hard on my back. Good luck why don't you start off without a double you won't be going far to start with and see how you get on ? Thoseproperdoubles are huge

RedFraggle · 06/07/2007 13:50

My DD was 2.1 when DS was born. I got a Combi We2 from ebay for about £70 which has been good. DS is only 4 weeks old so Ihaven't been out a lot, but the pram is great and my parents have used it a few times already and love it.
My thought is that I will probably only need it for 6 - 8 months as my DD loves to walk, then I can sell it on Ebay once I'm done with it.
I went for the Combi as I have a little car and it is the ONLY double buggy I could find that fits in the boot!

3monkeys · 06/07/2007 13:58

Exactly 2 years between my first 2 -I had a Maclaren twin buggy which was fab. they liked being next to each other and I could control DS1 in carparks etc better than if he was walking! Used it for about 18 months

mad4girls · 06/07/2007 14:22

you could always buy m and p 3 in 1 and then buy a duette chassis on ebay this enables you click and off whichever 2 items u choose in any order ie car seat and seat unit or carrycot and seat unit, either one can go at front or back facing each other, away or both facing you

then when ds is older if your still using it you can buy an additonal seat unit for lo or go back to use the single chassis wit buggy board if needed thats the combo i used dd1 was 2.7 when dd2 was born and dd1 used to sleep alot whne out in pram, but it meant if dd1 was at nursery i could convert my dubble into a single IYSWIM

BHANNAE · 06/07/2007 14:38

I bought a m&p duette chassis and two sets of tops, kiki pink for new baby and cityscape for my boy(the two are made of the same denim material so match nicely).
I also have a single chassis for when I only have one plus a car seat that clicks on either frame.
This combo means that you can use a proper carrycot for the new baby which was important to me.
I bought all of mine brand new on ebay. You can pick up secondhand versions with converse seats for around £60-£70 sometimes though.
There is the newer version of the duette chassis available at classiechassis for £139.

I reckon go for a double buggy, there was the same age gap between between my dd and ds, and I had planned on using a sling but dd got really jealous when ds was in the sling and wanted to be carried too. It was also really useful for day trips out, as they could both (occasionally!) sleep in it.

sweetkitty · 06/07/2007 16:36

I was all set on a P&T but am now intrigued about this M&P Duette chassis combo thing will have to go and google it now

ow82 · 06/07/2007 19:27

me to kitty! lol. very intregued, when I think about it top walk to our mother and toddler group which we go to 2 times per week it's a 20 min walk for me and DS in the buggy - up hills as well, so at 2 really i'm expecting a bit much of him arn't I - also the shop is about the same distance away which I go to/dr's etc so prob 3/4 times per week I do that walk.

(can you see i'm trying to work out my arguement to DH!) might well go for the double M&P then and see how we go - (and get a sling to see how that works )

mad - so i'd need two chassi's for that then - the 3 in 1 and then the spare for the double?

i'm sure a company should make one pram which can be a double or single and have all of these features in the one buggy! lol. not sure DH will allow me to get in theory (to him anyhow) 2 buggys when I already have quite a few on the go!

off to research the M&P duette.

ow82 · 06/07/2007 19:32

you can get umbrealla fold double tandums as well for the car - so now i'm thinking one for the hosue and one for the car - wonder how far DH will allow my pram fetish!

OP posts:
BHANNAE · 06/07/2007 20:13

Re the umberella fold tandems-dont go for a mothercare hoxton as you will have no end of trouble with the pneumatic tyres and mothercares warrenty only lasts 6mths so after that replacements etc cost an arm and a leg!
Ingelsina do a twin/single on a bouncy chassis. They sometimes come up on ebay. You can have the seats facing all ways incl side by side plus you can use it like a single with only one seat on.VERY expensive new but like I said they sometimes come up.
Good luck with the search.

mad4girls · 06/07/2007 20:21

it depends on preference and budget of course

do you want the whole system new or would you be willing to go second hand ?

you can pick up a single m&p 3in1 on whatever chassis u decide really cheap second hand and brand new(or nearly new) and most ppl sell their duette chassis seperately, although every now and again you might get a full set up on duette chassis, with/out a single chassis including

but whether u buy a single or duette chassis you can get them so cheap on ebay, and choose swivel wheels/classic

i bought my 3 in 1 for dc3 due in dec off ebay lately and my mum say it and thought it was new i bought on a classic chassis but will be picking up an mpx(swivel wheel) for about £60 just so i can switch between as i like classic for long walks but swivel wheels for shopping trips,

have to say my 2 dd's are 7 and 5 now and i had the duette for them 5 yrs ago and im still raving about it, i think it was the best thing ever invented dont know why m&p discontinued the duette chassis, but type in mamas and papas on ebay and it should bring one up not sure whats on at mo, just so you can an idea of the set up as its quite hard to explain.

my main reason for choosing were i wanted something that could carry 2 children but 1 whne needed, and i wanted something i could use with a carrycot(there was nothing on the market at the time, that had that option)i also wanted something i could put a car seat, and a seta unit on i also needed something that would provide a full recline position for older dc(which was also something you dont get from most tandems) i also needed something that could let the lightest(youngest) ride at the front as i cant lift a heavy toddler at the front (like most tandems) due to an injury

you would be hard pushed to find something that fitted my requirements now never mind 5 yrs ago, when jane twin and phil and teds i dont think even existed.

sorry for long posted once i egt going about mamas and papas i cant stop just love em how sad

Berrie · 06/07/2007 20:22

Definitly, have not read rest of thread but double nipper...love it

had to show you this
ebay item

sweetkitty · 06/07/2007 21:05

ow82 - I spent a good hour pram researching on ebay today, don't get a M&P Twin Aria the quality is rubbish. I looked at M&P 3 in 1's as well and they are costly for everything then you have the duette chassis to buy as well. I'm still set on a P&T though although not a thing of beauty or my first choice I think it's a great idea, double to single quickly also a great little hop on seat for tired toddlers.

chopster · 07/07/2007 22:53

ow they do hold their valiue very well. The jane is available in a lot of combinations , you could have a toddler seat and a carrycotg.
