I need to buy a baby monitor and there just seem to be so many available I have no idea where to start - did any of you find a good site that you can see reviews or how did you decide which one to go for?

[watches with interest]

saralou · 05/07/2007 11:33

mn does reviews look at the top bit

i would recomend digital... cuts down on the interference noise!

saralou · 05/07/2007 11:39

i have this one here

Mummy2TandF · 05/07/2007 11:48

I second Sarahlou's choice - I have one for my ds (now 2.6) and it is great! No interference or anything and I payed about £70 for it! I also have a philips digital monitor for dd but would go for the BT one anytime, all my friends are that I made such a good choice first time, they have all gone out and bought one now

VictorVictoria · 05/07/2007 11:50

100% agree (I actually ahve the next model up with temperature guage although I prob wouldn't bother with that again (that decidion delegated to DH)

saralou · 05/07/2007 11:53

theirs also a plus one which shows tempreture aswell... thats the £70 one!

small hijack, mummy2 come and say hi on the postatal thread, we haven't seen you in ages!!!

Caz10 · 05/07/2007 12:21

My friend swears by this type of thing:

angelcare

and says its the only way she ever got any sleep!

But other people have said it would make them more paranoid not less!

Babylovesmuffins · 05/07/2007 13:24

I bought the BT Digital Baby Monitor Plus at the weekend - basically the same one that other people have already mentioned but with the thermometer. There is an alarm that sounds if the temperature in the room drops below 16 degrees or reaches higher than 20 degrees but you can change the settings to your own preference. We were going to buy a Grobag Egg Thermometer but we won't now that we bought this model of baby monitor.

We had no idea what to go for either! The digital one appealed to us as there was no interference. This is our first baby so absolutely no previous experience but we've tested the monitor out in the house and it seems to work well!

Sorry for long post!

claraq · 05/07/2007 13:49

We have the BT digital one too and have never had a problem with it as long as you remember to keep it charged if you want to carry it round the house with you!

You can play lullabies through it but that seems to scary the beejeebies out of my (22 month old) daughter so we don't use that function....

Tallis · 05/07/2007 14:37

Quick! Just seen special offer on the Boots website (don't know about stores...) - the deluxe BT monitor with temp gauge for 49.99...

NoNickname · 05/07/2007 14:42

If you can manage the expense (about £100 now??) I can really recommend a video montior. When ds was small, we had only an audio one. Then, when truthfully he no longer needed one, at about 2.8, we bought a video one. We have had it nearly a year now and I have been really pleased with it.

NoNickname · 05/07/2007 14:57

www.tinytotscam.com/products/monitoring_kits.htm

Found the one we have - we have the night vision one with one camera (£129.99).

mother2b · 05/07/2007 15:01

my DS(sis) bought me the tyxilix baby moniter, i dont know what its like yet though? is anyone using one of these?

SweetyDarling · 05/07/2007 15:04

Oooh love the idea of the movement monitor pad! Anyone got expereince of one of these?

dal21 · 05/07/2007 15:16

Hi KP - I am going for the BT digital plus. It is digital (no interference), has talkback function so you can try and soothe LO from another room; plays lullabies; has room temp thermometer....and great reviews.

If you do go for the video monitor - the only thing I was warned about was interference, especially from wireless networks. We and our neighbours all have one.

Re. the movement monitor - I have decided against it. Very personal call methinks. Is recommended for those parents who may have asthma etc in their family - but otherwise is not a core essential. Also - depends on how long you plan to have baby in room with you - maybe make a call on that later? If you follow current guidelines of 6 months in room with parents...that should replace the need for movement monitor.

MrsMar · 05/07/2007 15:37

On the subject of movement monitors... we don't have room for a cot in our bedroom, so once the baby has outgrown the moses basket, he's going to have to go in his own room, so I was thinking about the angelcare thingy... however, a friend of mine who works in Mothercare said you have to be careful about using them with different types of mattresses. Anyone have any ideas about this? I've got a sprung cotbed mattress, will that work with the pad monitor?

Clydesdaleclopper · 05/07/2007 17:08

I've just got the BT one because I got it free with my Nectar points.

We used the angel monitor, you need to put a piece of hardboard down under the matress so the monitor pad lis flat (doesn't work if its on the slats). It was fab and so reasssuring. Would highly recommend it.

nappyaddict · 06/07/2007 09:14

is your house very big? in most houses you don't need a baby monitor and you would be able to hear the baby crying if you were downstairs in the living room.

Tinkjon · 06/07/2007 10:18

nappyaddict, it's true that you can hear your baby crying from mostly anywhere but there are also things that you can't always hear so easily - although it's not nice to think about, choking is very quiet and I don't think you'd hear that if you were downstairs. Also agree that good monitors let you hear your baby's breathing, therfore making a movement monitor unneccessary.

Pheebe · 06/07/2007 10:35

We found that knowing an alarm would go off it bub stopped breathing while we were asleep was invaluable and gave us the reassurance we needed.

onechild · 06/07/2007 10:44

mine was a gift used it cpl times in 13months as dd makes funny noises when he asleep so i was up and down all night checking she was ok

urshie · 06/07/2007 10:51

I have the BT digital monitor - it is fantastic - have had no problems at all in over 2 years, and great range.

mad4girls · 06/07/2007 11:11

i would second what loopymumsy says about the philips monitors only transmitting when there is sound, i found highly irritating as my previous one i could actuly hear dd breathing on it,

i had the anglecare movement one with dd2 got a it really chreap brand new from donnington market in leicester, was very good(when i remembered to switch it on) but i would forget to switch it off when removing dd from the cot so would be settled into to a late night feed and the alarm would start bleeping to say no movement felt. in the end i would then forget to swtich back on(so defe ated the object really)

on a better note my friend bought that tixylix one from lloyds pharmacy(on sale £10 instead of £30 i think ) she says its great does the basics and she is v.over protective, kept checking on him to see if breathing etc

as for me im expecting no3 not bothering this time as we only live in small house and we onyl have 2 bedroom, the 2nd occupied by 2 dd's sp lo will share with us anyway.

sorry for long post
