I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.

@Delilah7 I wonder why he was a rebel 😂😂
Don't listen to her, mine went in a huff with me because I don't want to tell the whole world about it which upset her because I'm "not excited enough" like please I've been more intimate with my toilet recently than dh. I'm only 14 weeks too, and cause I lost so my weight there's no bump.

I'd outright tell her your doctor says it's safe and it's better than being seriously ill.

Sorry Mil's wind me right up 😂😂

beforeihit30 · 11/02/2019 13:58

Oh dear, return of the vomit this morning 🤢 and I thought I was doing well, ish.

DH says, “Oh darling, you don’t look well,” followed by, “...We don’t have to do this again”. Ah, love him, silly man.

I’ll see how the next few days go and take it from there...

avacadooo · 11/02/2019 14:00

@Delilah7 forgot to say my sister's Moto with me is do what you like just stay away from booze and illegal drugs!
I mean people who are treating us like we're snorting coke everyday need to get a grip cause my sister literally sees people who have smoked joints before their appointments and that pisses her off but taking meds to eat and drink is part of our survival!!

Delilah7 · 11/02/2019 14:01

@avacadooo oh don't I lost a stone from my 9st frame in the first 12 weeks. And haven't been intimate with OH since being pregnant. I'm 18 bloody weeks!!! X

avacadooo · 11/02/2019 14:01

@beforeihit30 nothing worse than the vomit curveball! Hope you feel less awful soon!💕

beforeihit30 · 11/02/2019 14:05

Thanks! I feel like my body does this to me whenever I start thinking “When should I return to work?” Grin answer: not yet...

stroan · 11/02/2019 19:01

Hi,

I haven’t posted much since my post on the last thread, but I was very grateful for the advice.

I had an emergency consultant appointment last Friday as my GP was refusing to prescribe the medication that hospital midwives had recommended. Mentally, I was very, very low and having some scary thoughts about whether I could continue with the pregnancy.

As a reminder, I’m not being sick and mainly suffering from nausea. Lots of secondary symptoms caused by not being able to drink like severe headaches and visual migraines - the GP wouldn’t even let me discuss those so no-one had a view of the full impact.

The consultant was great and suggested a combination of Ondansatron (3x), Cyclizine (3x) and Stemetil when I feel I need something else. I’ve done that for three days and there’s been zero noticeable difference.

Is it worth even discussing different things to try? I have the midwife tomorrow so can bring it up. I battled so hard just to get these meds and can’t beat the thought of starting the same battle all over again. Do I just have to accept that this is how I’m going to feel for the foreseeable future?

Blii · 11/02/2019 19:28

Hi. Just place marking in the new thread.
Stroan there is definitely more combinations you can try. I was on just ondansetron at the beginning and my doctor wouldn’t prescribe anything else, she said I’m already on the the best there is. I didn’t know at the time that I could combine the meds. Talk to your consultant/midwife.

Had a scan today, my first scan. I’m slightly behind what I thought. Grrrr. 13+3 and due 16th august. Still being sick in the day and have all day nausea, but definitely seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

norbert23 · 11/02/2019 19:38

Just popping on to say hi and hope that those feeling grim have a good nights sleep and a better tomorrow. I've had my best day in about a month and managed some ravioli at dinner, which has stayed down and was really lovely after weeks of beige food. I also had 2 jam doughnuts - major treat.
I have to have a phone interview with Occupational health this week and am thinking of suggesting no late stays at school for the first couple of weeks when I'm back, do you think that sounds ok? There's not a great deal more they can do really and as I generally get pukey about 3pm onwards I think that might be the most helpful.
Sorry for the rambling on - hope that everyone is doing better xx

cattaxi · 11/02/2019 19:45

Hello! I’vd been pretty tough again today. Only 4 weeks! FFS! It wasn’t this bad this early last time.
I have discovered that hiding the gaging when dealing with toddler poo is pretty hard.
I hope you’re feeling better @calmer.

Ignore the unhelpful advice @Delilah7. They are so careful after thalidomide, they wouldn’t be prescribing you anything risky.

Delilah7 · 11/02/2019 19:47

@cattaxi thank you Hun means a lot x

Reastie · 11/02/2019 20:04

Just quickly popping on as going to bed but wanted to say to stroan I had the same combo and also had to fight very hard to get it! Are your ondansetron tablets 4 or 8 mg? As you can take 8 mg 3 x day. When I took 4 mg it made very little impact on nausea but it did help more at 8mg. Also check dose of stemetil as you may be able increase that too. There are other combos but might be best to try increasing dose of what you’ve got initially. It definitely didn’t cure my nausea, I still struggled a lot and was housebound even on all the medication for weeks but it did make a difference mentally and I was able to cope a little better than last time because of them. Make sure you get a laxitive with ondansetron too, start ASAP before you get blocked up.

Norbert that sounds good to finish early (or at least not stay late). How are you feeling about going back to work? Had a long chat with my mum today about viability of returning to work in a couple of weeks and we bare th came to the decision to ask if gp could sign me off until Easter (hopefully she’s willing) with the aim to go in after then. That,l give me time to build a bit of stamina and get less anxious about leaving the house so it’s more likely to be a success rather than returning and getting signed off straight away again.

Reastie · 11/02/2019 20:06

Stroan to add re stemetil check the guidelines but I believe max dose of that is 10 mg 3 x day

stroan · 11/02/2019 20:20

Thanks @reastie you’ve given me something to at least bring up tomorrow. At first, I was on Ondansatron 4mg but 4 times a day. I did notice an improvement but it faded and then the GP wouldn’t prescribe more. The consultant recommended the current combination but I will ask tomorrow about increasing the dose.

Stemetil is just a one off to take on really bad days (although, that’s every day!) but would only take one per day.

I’ve started being sick recently but I think it’s more the extra symptoms. Like if I try to drink something that doesn’t agree with me, or if I nap and wake up too hungry.

norbert23 · 11/02/2019 20:24

Hi @Reastie sorry that you're anxious about being outside it must be so hard. I think Easter sounds like a good timeframe to aim for especially as you'll need enough time to build up your strength.
I'm ok I think with the idea of being back, my class are hard work but sweet and I miss being part of the hustle and bustle. Today's been a good day but I've still been sick twice, the difference is that I haven't felt so awful in between and less tired. I think the key thing this time has been starting meds early and resting during the last few weeks. If it wasn't for everyone being so supportive on here I think I would've gone back 2 weeks ago and made it worse. I'm well aware that one good day doesn't mean anything though and I will probably regret all my optimism! I will pop in on Thursday & possibly Friday for a few hours and see how that goes. Then it'll be half term and I just have to entertain a 3 year old... 🤞
Hope you get a bit of light at the end of the tunnel soon xx

Back, everyone! SeaEagleFeather, eallison Reastie and others have been doing a wonderful job. Welcome to Delilah7, Cataxi and moonkid.
moonkmid How exciting! Twins! Incredibly, with you we will have two sets of twins at the same time on this thread. Those expecting twins seem to suffer badly early on, but it does seem to clear up earlier, I assume because they might have been tipped over into Hyperemesis by the greater dose of hormones, and not had it with a singleton pregnancy? I do hope you can get some help with your toddler twins: friends, relatives or nursery?
notquiteagandt Congratulations. Lovely news. I hope they can gi ve you advice on weight loss. As with others, my DD had weight loss largely due to jaundice.
Sorry to read of the suffering. Much admiration for norbert for soldiering on with teaching when a day with two vomits is a good day.
Calmercomber I am glad you at last got fluids, but a seven hour wait with the special part for Hyperemesis sufferers having to be given to 'flu sufferers is so awful.

Thanks for the welcome and encouragement. I had hyperemesis until I gave birth in my last twin pregnancy so not feeling hopeful but I know it could be different this time.
I've had a bad few days and this afternoon decided not to take my cyclizine and have had a better evening. Now this may come back to bite me and the sickness gets worse but I'm having a few hours of no vomiting and that's so good. This morning I thought I was heading for hospital - had been up sick through the night several times and not kept meal or any food down in several days. I was actually wetting myself with the force of the vomiting. This is so horrible. Has that happened to others?
Sorry to hear you are all suffering so much at the hands of this awful illness. Who else is expecting twins?

cattaxi · 12/02/2019 06:57

@moonkid - yes, I’m my last pregnancy I pee’s while vomiting quite a lot.

I’m feeling really rough this morning. Obviously, it’s a good sign that my hormone levels are increasing. My period would be due today.
I’ve already lost 4 lbs since last Monday. Currently sat in bed with the 3 year old, trying to find the will to get up and face the day.

Teddyreddy · 12/02/2019 07:47

@stroan my main problem is nausea that means I can't drink too. Are they checking your blood pressure and heart rate - I've had no problems getting medication from the GP since they found I had a heart rate of 115 and significantly raised blood pressure, caused by dehydration.

I'm on metaclopramide (10 mg twice a day), ondensatron (4 mg, was twice now trying to cut it down to once), and cyclizine (3 x a day). Of those drugs, the most effective in helping me drink is metoclopramide. They are less keen on prescribing it because of potential neurological side effects, but it might be worth asking about.

I can't take stemetil so haven't tried that, and haven't tried 8 mg ondensatron as they suggested metoclopramide first and that plus 4 mg ondensatron worked. You can take metaclopramide up to 3 x a day but because of the potential side effects I've tried to keep the dose as low as I can, and take ondensatron as well.

@LucindaE I'm due 9th August for your list.

I'm due back at work today for the first time since before Christmas and I'm feeling really nervous, it feels almost like starting a new job again....

DeadDoorpost · 12/02/2019 13:10

Anyone else not able to stand the taste of their own mouth? Also struggle with toothpaste so it's a constant battle right now.

And threw up this morning. Taken Prochlorperazine this time as I'm switching between that and ondansetron every 4 hours but seems like the Prochlorperazine isn't cutting it. I don't know whether to go back to hospital or not. They did say they'd take me back if needed.

Had some good news though. My nephew was born yesterday. SiL had a rough delivery, something I'm grateful I didn't have last time. Also, I wouldn't have coped with 50+ hours of contractions with a btb baby...

Foreverblues · 12/02/2019 14:10

Just checking in to see how everyone is and have a bit of a moan. Our house of 3 all have sinusitis. Dp and 3 yo are on antibiotics. 28 week pregnant me is not 😩 I’ve been blowing my nose so much I’ve ended up covered in coldsores. Again. So worried they will be lurking when baby arrives and she or 3 yo will catch it. I’m in agony and been told paracetamol ok, feel bad taking it.

Not long finished my phased return to work so my boss sounded thrilled when I called in sick today 😢 x

moonkid · 12/02/2019 17:45

I'm having a very bad day, I've been unable to keep anything down at all apart from sucking on a boiled sweet. I'm so unbelievably thirsty but fluids not agreeing with me. Have also got diarrhoea but (sorry for the TMI) but it's just water not actual food waste!
I'm wondering when I should phone back to the maternity unit for help? I'm terrified of beautiful hg turned away (as happened in my first pregnancy many times).
I've tested my ketones and there's only a trace, so Im thinking they might not do anything for me, even though I know ketones are not 100% reliable.
Wondering if I should phone now or leave it overnight?

moonkid · 12/02/2019 17:56

Not beautiful HG!! I meant being turned away 🙄

LucindaE · 12/02/2019 18:20

moonkid It is definitely worth a try; I would have thought the ketones would be building up. If you have dry skin and mouth, a headache, 'builder's tea urine' or feel vague and dizzy, they are all signs. As others say, hopefully they won't rely entirely on ketones. Remind me the meds you are on? calmercomber and Hairigician are both expecting twins. A lot suffer from that - I got to the point of removing my knickers as I began (when inside) Shock
cattaxi It does seem to be starting horribly early, and pre-emptive meds are surely the best course if possible. The earlier you start meds, the less chance of the repetitive vomiting pattern setting in, it seems, a neurologial reflex I don't have the medical background to analyse.
DeadDoorPost The taste is awful. Many find sucking boiled sweets, parma violets or some such, can help, but can increase saliva. I used to suck barley sugar from an old fashioned sweet shop. SeaEagleFeather got them online.
TeddyreddyI've added you.
Foreverblues Poor you. That sounds awful. It can't be helped if you are off work. What a time you have had!
On fluids that have helped others; full sugar flat coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, Dr Pepper, Iron Bru, fizzy water, Elderflower water, Elderflower cordial and tonic water, lemonade, fizzy orange, tonic water, orange juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, orange squash (if not too acid), and sips of chocolate milkshake. Some foods: cuppa soup, tinned fruit, slices of melon and mango, nibbles of crisps and chips, Scotch pancakes, baked potatoes, biscuits, cheap ice cream and jelly.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.
Apologies to any

@LucindaE I'm
On cyclizine three times a day. Worked well the first few days but not working very well now.
Good (but not good) to know others also prone to peeing themselves when vomiting.
Definitely feel weak, a bit dizzy, lips are dry, skin in dry, have not had any urge to pee today And when have went it's just been small dribbles. My throat is also raw as anything and I just feel like utter shit.
