Talk to me about nappies

Starting to get bits and pieces in for when baby arrives.

We don't have a garden or space for drying, so reusables are a no-go.

How many do babies use each day roughly? What sizes should we get in? Which brand is the best? Diaper genie or not? Help!

TIA Smile

I haven't had baby yet (35 weeks). My sister has told me she got through about 10 nappies a day at the beginning and then it sort of tapered down. Not sure when that happens but probably depends on the baby.

'Best' brand is the one that fits your baby the best (we have about 4 different brands). I have about 5 packs of size one (which I've heard most babies will use for only a short time) and about 7 or so packs of size two. But my husband doesn't want us to have to leave the house for the first month... so I indulge him...

Tiredeyes21 · 03/02/2019 11:36

We used Aldi size 1 and 2, then pampers after then as every others leaked for us, Asda Tesco and Lidl. Pampers are always on offer in the baby sales! I’d just stock on a couple of packets of each as you don’t know what size they will be, how big their legs are compared to waist etc

2dogsandPG · 03/02/2019 13:47

Brilliant, thank you both. We'll start stocking up!

Yes, around 10 a day with a newborn. Less as they get older. We used Aldi with both of ours, through all sizes. Worked great, cheap as chips. We had a nappy bin, but honestly, just keep that day’s in a carrier bag then stick in your outside bin each night! One less bit of equipment to buy and use.

2dogsandPG · 03/02/2019 14:04

Thank you. I've heard mixed reviews about nappy bins - some say they're a waste of money and others that they're a godsend! We're fortunate to not be too tight on cash, so I might get one and sell it second hand if we don't use it.

We used a nappy bin at first as we were in a flat but as soon as we moved to a house we got rid of it and they go straight in the outside bin. Emptying the nappy bin when full is fucking rank 🤮😂

PloddingOnwards · 03/02/2019 16:33

Aldi nappies all the way along with their extra sensitive wipes cant go wrong.
I'd just buy nappies weekly imo depending on the weight when your lil ones born I wouldn't go over board on size 1 nappies.

Alyosha · 03/02/2019 16:44

10-15 as a newborn. Ds now has around 5-7 nappies a say at 15 weeks but that is on the high side.

mrsed1987 · 03/02/2019 18:08

My ds is 3 weeks old and we go through about 10-12 a day. I have the tommee tippee nappy bin purely because i got it for free when buying something else and it is a god send. Doesnt smell at all so no issue emptying when full

anniehm · 03/02/2019 18:47

I used disposables at first then switched to a nappy service who wash them for you - then I bought my own (I tumble dried them, you don't need a garden). I'm told Aldi are good for disposables

GlamourBear · 03/02/2019 18:49

We use resuables but I started with disposables with my first. I'd suggest not bulk buying any in case they don't suit your baby e.g. they have a reaction to them or outgrow them. Buy a few packs from a variety of places in size 1 & 2. If you are conscious of your impact on the environment (only saying this as it's why a lot of people use reusables absolutely not judging as we have used a bit of both in the past) then have a look at brands such as naty, kit & kin and beaming baby. Nappy bins are more of an inconvenience in my experience but I know they work well for others!

GlamourBear · 03/02/2019 18:50

Just to add we've found Aldi the best disposable brand by far and often the cheapest especially when they have offers on

MagicalCreatures · 03/02/2019 20:02

It’s a difficult one really because I have found them all so different.
I’ve found pampers awful and my baby has ended up with wee up his back (and a new change of clothes) every time I’ve used one on him.
Asda’s little angels fitted him lovely (he’s quite a skinny/small baby) and have been the best for us, but they do come up smaller then the other brands and size ones don’t seem to have lasted us as long.
Aldi’s seem to have come up quite big compared to the others.
So if I were you, don’t stock up on one brand too much until you have found what suits you better x

2dogsandPG · 03/02/2019 21:29

Thank you all for your advice! We're going to get a variety. I'm also going to research the Tommy Tippee bin!

I'm 27 weeks with twins and have two older girls. I've always stuck to pampers - 10/12 a day for newborns and up to about 3 months. Nappies after feeds during day and before feeds on a night. Get the nappy bin - its a small thing that makes life easier especially if you have dogs/cats as it seals the smell! I've stocked up on size 1 and 2 as well as a couple of packs of newborn nappies as there are some great offers on with so many baby events at the moment. Asda has a big baby event on this week.

fedupandlookingforchange · 03/02/2019 21:37

Definitely get a selection not too many size ones. Boots are really good elasticated backs. Tesco, Morrisons, Asda and lidl all good. The eco disposables were ok but I didn’t buy them twice. Not tried Aldi. I didn’t like pampas for new born but have found them good for a toddler. Some days with a toddler I’m still getting through 10 nappies a day.

NatureGal · 03/02/2019 21:45

Aldi and Lidl nappies always been great for mine. Tesco and Asda great for size 0 as mine were tiny babies. Never got on with pampers, expensive and always leaked on my children and I can't stand the smell of them. It's trial and error to start, find what fits best, comfy etc. Three kids and never used a nappy bin, never saw the point or expense. Straight in the dustbin. I remember with my first hardly buying any size 1 and 2 but loads of size 3, however they didn't get into size 1 until a few weeks after birth but they were tiny and skinny. Get a few of each, you can't lose.

kiki22 · 03/02/2019 21:53

Pampers for me

First baby we lived in a house our bin was at the door so no special nappy bin second our bin is around the side so we have an angel care nappy bin.

My oldest was 10 a day going down 6 then to 4 a day just changing after meals by 18 months potty trained by 2 my youngest still uses 8 a day started off about 10 sometimes needing a change at 5 am he pees for Britain and poo's 2/3 times a day ds1 poo'd once a day from the start. Youngest is 2.5 with no interest in potty training.

ColdCottage · 03/02/2019 21:59

I started on pampers but changed to Aldi - they are great (until they get really big from size 7 on I needed pampers again).

I never bothered with a nappy bin I just popped them then a bucket outside the back door and then into the black bin all at once. When they are small they don't really smell.

Also top tip I was given was use the next size up over night and then no need to change overnight (unless there is a very rare poo) which means you don't wake them up too much and they go back to sleep more quickly. More sleep for you too.

R7589 · 03/02/2019 21:59

Our LO is 8 weeks old and is still in size 1 pampers but he was born 5lb4oz so started in size 0.
We have tried Pampers, Aldi and Tesco so far. Aldi he leaked through and I thought they felt quite rough, Tesco he also leaked through. I've found pampers the best for him. Got a few size 2 Asda ones as heard loads of good things about them!

We didn't have nappy bin at first but got the angelcare nappy bin in mothercare for £6 as our local one is closing down. At the end of the day it's a bin but it doesn't smell and keeps all the nappies in one bag.

Clevs · 03/02/2019 22:08

Everyone I know raves about Aldi nappies. We bought a pack when our son was a newborn and most of them leaked so we've not bought any more.

Just buy a pack of various brands and see which ones suit your baby best, what suits one baby may not suit another as we found out. We prefer Tesco nappies but I've read a lot online about how people dislike them. So do your own research rather than bulk buying a load of what someone else recommends and being stuck with them if they're no good.

Oysterbabe · 03/02/2019 22:42

I don't get the Aldi nappy love either. I actually use them quite a lot, as it's our nearest shop, and they're fine but not better than others that are available. I find tescos own brand better, they're less bulky and the waistband is stretcher and more comfortable. There's barely any difference prisewise.

TrashPanda · 03/02/2019 22:49

We've used pretty much all of them apart from Asda. Huggies and Tesco for eldest, Pampers, Tesco and Aldi for middle and youngest had Pampers and now Lidl. They've all been different shapes and got on with different brands. Not used Asda as it's the other side of town and a pain to get to.

hammeringinmyhead · 04/02/2019 06:39

I didn't like Aldi but have used Lidl with some success. Be careful with sizing as Pampers size 3 is up to 22lb but Lidl size 3 says up to 15lb (I think) for example.

Don't buy too many. DS is 3 months and has worn 0, 1, 2 and 3 having gone from 5lb8oz to about 15lb.

I didn't bother with a nappy bin as I just bag them and take the little pile out to the main bin daily.

Spam88 · 04/02/2019 06:59

I don't think there are any best nappies really, just depends what fits your baby. All I'd say is don't bother with expensive ones.

About 10 a day is right for a newborn. I'd just buy two packs of size 1 and leave any more until the baby is here.

Nappies don't really smell until they start having solids so I wouldn't waste your money on a special bin.
