Terrified of induction - midwife saying no to C section

I'm due to be induced at 40+10 on Monday. This is my first DC. About a week ago I asked if I could skip induction and go straight to C section. I was told outright no and C section was only available if induction fails.

I've since been reading and researching and trying to get my head around things but I'm terrified of induction and have read that up to 40% of inductions end up in C sections anyway, and it carries a much higher risk of intervention.

I really want an elective C section. Can I get one? If so how? And have I left it too late to request this? I have a midwife appointment tomorrow for a third sweep so I can discuss again but I'm worried she will just stone wall me again and say no.

Honestly it’s not up in the air. It’s sinple. You do not consent to induction so they can’t start induction. Then somebody will come and talk to you about a section. Please don’t panic. Don’t ask midwives for a section. Just tell them you don’t consent to induction

3boysandabump · 19/01/2019 12:26

Sounds like things are heading I the right direction OP. Hopefully you'll be In established labour soon and the induction/section won't be necessary at all

OhTheRoses · 19/01/2019 12:38

Good luck op. You should complain about the attitude of these midwives once this is over. Disgusting.

GummyGoddess · 19/01/2019 12:43

I hope this is it, but if you go in on Monday, tell them that you are there for a section. No induction. If they say it's for baby's safety then tell them that a section is the only way they will get the baby out.

To be perfectly honest I would probably lie in your position as I wouldn't consent to an induction either, and tell them my reasons for not wanting an induction. That sweeps make you feel violated and the idea of an induction has had you crying for days and wishing you were not pregnant, you can't face the thought of induction and labour with feeling assaulted, etc etc and you are frightened.

OhTheRoses · 19/01/2019 12:58

Actually I think I'd just say that as the midwives you have spoken to appear completely ignorant of NICE guidelines and have laughed at you and blocked your right to have an informed discussion with a qualified dr, you do not consent to a midwife managing your labour because trust has been breached.

NotAGoodParent · 19/01/2019 13:36

Good luck OP! Sounds like it's happening, :) x

RonSwansonsTurfNTurf · 19/01/2019 14:03

Great news OP, sounds like you'll swerve an induction and hopefully a section too! Best of luck!! You'll be seeing your baby soon!!! X

Mrsmummy90 · 19/01/2019 14:06

Good luck op! Sounds like you're in proper labour! Xxx

le42 · 19/01/2019 14:07

Good luck hun! Sounds like the end is in sight for you, what a shame you’ve had all this stress at the last minute... not long now until lovely cuddles!! ❤️

clairestandish · 19/01/2019 14:16

I don’t blame you for not wanting good induction. I remember looking at my hospitals stats and for 1st time mothers being induced nearly 50% had emergency c-sections! I was completely shocked at how high the rate was. This is information that I had to go looking for myself as well, none of this is mentioned at all by midwives when you are breezily ‘booked in’ for an induction.

The rate of difficult and instrumental births was higher as well. The fact you are more likely to end up with a EMCS or instrumental birth means the argument of ‘An ELCS is such a hard recovery/major surgery’ to make you opt for induction doesn’t make a huge amount of sense.

I do know people who have had very positive induced births. However, I do think there is a lack of transparency over the risks.

moredoll · 19/01/2019 14:47

Good luck OP!
Hope it is labour and it goes well.

ThanksItHasPockets · 19/01/2019 14:47

Good luck OP! Flowers

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 19/01/2019 18:30

Oooh all the best OP!

GummyGoddess · 19/01/2019 20:03

Recovery from an ELCS is faster than an emergency one, so if there was a 50/50 chance with induction I would be choosing a planned one. Better that than instrumental.

This thread is enlightening, I've had 3 children and never been told I am allowed to request a section over induction, I've been induced twice and had waters broken for me all 3 times. I have asked if it was an option for me and only with my 3rd did they say yes but strongly discouraged on the basis of my two previous labours going well. I haven't had a c section so don't know about recovery but I've experienced ventous and forceps delivery and they weren't that bad, I've had 2 episiotomies and again, they weren't that bad. The hormone drips I had were taken away very quickly as they weren't needed once my waters broke my body took over but for the time I had it in it wasn't too bad and believe me I love pain relief. I know not everyone is the same but I can see why you are anxious about being induced with all the horror stories. I think it is likely they discourage you as if it was as easy as all of us deciding we wanted sections they'd not be able to facilitate or fund them. Regardless I'm so glad you are in labour and you don't have induction/section looming over you, hopefully you'll feel so happy you didn't have to go through either. I agree though if the Nice guidelines have been breached that is wrong. Sorry you've been stressed out over it, hope you have as lovely a labour as you can and enjoy your new baby. X

Thank you so much everyone for your support and advice on this. It turns out I was worrying over nothing as Saturday was labour - we got to hospital at 3pm and I was 4cm dilated and admitted to the labour ward. I managed on gas and air until 7cm then had an epidural but he came quite quickly at 10pm. We are at home and feeling so lucky and I'm counting my lucky stars I went into labour naturally. I had an episiotomy so am quite sore but generally pretty good and so happy to be at home with him.

Your recovery should be pretty fast, I was out doing things by end of the week...

Great news - congratulations!!

3boysandabump · 21/01/2019 13:33

Congratulations Thanks

CottonSock · 21/01/2019 13:38

Congrats. Enjoy your baby cuddles

A bit late, but might help others. I came onto say that I refused any intervention with my second after an induction with my first (c section in the end). I was booked in at 41 weeks for elective section to give me a chance to labour naturally (unlikely in my case).

MissMoodyMoo · 21/01/2019 14:20

Congratulations!! I'm so happy for you!!I was quite anxious waiting to here what they would have said to you today
