Does anyone know of an effective heartburn remedy please? Gaviscon seems to make me sick!

I tried everything but nothing worked for me... carrots seemed to be the best weirdly... but it only stopped when I got medication from the GP. My friend swears by apple cider vinegar and they advise you stay away from acidic, spicy, rich food. Hope you have more luck!

weegiemum · 06/12/2018 18:02

Fresh pineapple is good!

Thejezebel · 06/12/2018 18:02

A friend of mine always swore by half a teaspoon of breadsoda dissolved in a small bit of milk

ShatnersBassoon · 06/12/2018 18:05

Milk. I couldn't stop eating satsumas with one of mine, so I'd eat a few and then drink a pint of milk to hold the reflux down Blush

I used to get an antacid on prescription too that was good. Mucogel - repulsive name, worked wonders.

le42 · 06/12/2018 18:13

@ShatnersBassoon that’s so funny... I was drinking milk and the GP said it was bad to do... I’ve also Loved satsumas in the pregnancy and was told by GP those too were very acidic! Just goes to show it’s different for everyone! 🙈

Dalesgirl16 · 06/12/2018 18:22

I read online that milk makes it better immediately but then worse later. I hate the stuff though anyway. I thought I'd better ask personal experience anyway! If it doesn't get better with recommendations I will try to see if GP has something else to offer.

@dalesgirl16 if it doesn’t get better... what I got from the GP was brilliant ... I was absolutely demented, had to sleep sitting up... I’m on a double dose but it’s stopping the acid production.

I heard today that there is evidence that bad indigestion means your baby will have lots of hair! How mad is that?!

Hedgehogblues · 06/12/2018 18:29

Lemon juice in some water helps me

LeslieYep · 06/12/2018 19:16

I necked a glass of water with some bicarb in last night and helped a treat!

SantyClaws · 06/12/2018 19:18

Hot water - hottest you can manage. DH used to have an ulcer and that's what he used to do

Dalesgirl16 · 06/12/2018 19:20

I have bicarb. I will give it a go tonight

Very diluted peppermint water used to be used or peppermint tea

Foodylicious · 06/12/2018 19:27

Just get some Ranitidine.
Brand name is Zantac, but most supermarkets have a cheaper version for about 1/3 of the price.

It's fine to take in PG

Acopyofacopy · 06/12/2018 19:32

Handful of almonds.

3luckystars · 06/12/2018 19:32

Give up tea if you are drinking it.

bringbackthestripes · 06/12/2018 19:34

Yep bicarb does work. Teaspoon in a small glass stir it well then neck it in one. Tastes disgusting so have something to hand to take the taste away

Wingingthis · 06/12/2018 19:35

Bananas !

Graphista · 06/12/2018 19:37

"I heard today that there is evidence that bad indigestion means your baby will have lots of hair! How mad is that?!" That's been known for ages it's because hair is made from an acidic component apparently.

I had tons of heartburn and dd was indeed born very hairy! Not just on head either!

Milk, yogurt, cheese, any dairy basically.

I also found sunflower seeds, ginger and peppermint helped (can you tell I tried a lot?!)

CrabbyPatty · 06/12/2018 21:11

I forgot about the hair superstition - I'm suffering too, and was a hairy baby myself so expecting mine to have a full head!

@Foodlicious - The leaflet in the Ranitidine pack said not to take in pregnancy, so I got Morrison's own brand antacids, but my husband told me off for not checking with the midwife first.

Those who have sought medical advice - what did they advise you take?

Lynsey19 · 06/12/2018 23:17

I’m the same - I can’t stand gaviscon. Milk seems to be working well for me! X

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 07/12/2018 00:38

I’ve been prescribed Ranitidine in both pregnancies (DD indeed came out with loads of brown hair!).

The GP was really blasé about giving the prescription, and rolled his eyes when I explained about the pharmacist refusing to sell it to me without GP approval. He said they are very very over cautious with giving anything without a prescription to pregnant women- the exact same thing happened when I needed some annusol.

It’s really frustrating, especially when the GP had said it’s fine to take during pregnancy- just feels like a waste of NHS resources.

EyeDrops · 07/12/2018 00:56

Milk works for me, but only briefly. That's it besides gaviscon, everything else seems to make it worse!

My first child was indeed born hairy after bad heartburn in pregnancy (she's now 3 and still has a hairy back!), I'll see if number 2 follows the trend in a few months...! Smile

FrankiesKnuckle · 07/12/2018 02:15

Prescription strength ranitidine (150mg)
And omeprazole also on prescription saved me from my reflux misery.

I too had a baby with what resembled LEGO hair.

KonaMum · 07/12/2018 08:41

You can buy ranitidine tablets over the counter. I know it’s not a natural remedy but they work and are much less likely to make you sick than gaviscon.

Dalesgirl16 · 07/12/2018 15:52

I will ask for ranitidine otc then. I called the dr and she just said try different flavour Gavison or try Rennies.
