I'll be 10wks by then.

Acceptable as a one off indulgence or a silly risk?

I think I planned to have a Buck's Fizz last year but I ended up not even being able to eat anything apart from oat cakes because of my morning sickness.

One small glass is not unreasonable, it just depends on how you'll feel after.

FestiveNut · 05/12/2018 07:51

I wouldn't, but lots of people would, so it just depends on you really.

EgremontRusset · 05/12/2018 07:52

I did.
You might like Emily Oster’s book ‘Expecting better’ if you are interested in the risks around these things. It certainly affected what I did - I was more liberal with pate!

sonlypuppyfat · 05/12/2018 07:55

You need to look after yourself when you are pregnant but I really don't think that means giving up all pleasures and fun. Enjoy your fizz!

LittleMouseontheDairy · 05/12/2018 08:02

I’ll have a full glass! I’ve done a lot of reading on the subject and I’m satisfied that there is little evidence that moderate drinking causes harm. I second reading the book above - written by an American economist during pregnancy (or inspired by when she was pregnant)- it analyses the actual risk factors of various things presented to pregnant women, including alcohol, food and caffeine.
I know people hate it when this is said as well - but in my two previous pregnancies I had a glass of wine/ sparkling wine every now and then and both are bright and well adjusted children.
This is always a contentious subject and plenty will disagree with me. But in answer to your post no it WBU in my opinion!

TranmereRover · 05/12/2018 08:08

of course you wouldn't. However at a guess, 10 weeks is when you are least likely to want one! it won't taste the way you expect it to (red wine may be better?)

MaraW · 05/12/2018 08:09

I definitely would not drink in the first trimester.

usernamenamename · 05/12/2018 08:11

I drank half a lager in beer garden when pregnant and then felt really guilty so it wasn't really worth it 😂

coffeeforone · 05/12/2018 08:14

I would go ahead. I don't believe that an occasional small drink will cause any harm to an unborn baby. And I haven't seen any evidence to suggest otherwise.

I had the occasional beer/small wine throughout both my pregnancies.

Caprisunorange · 05/12/2018 08:17

I would

MakeAWhish · 05/12/2018 08:18

No, you would not be unreasonable. Enjoy!

INeedNewShoes · 05/12/2018 08:20

I did but actually was unusual amongst my friends in doing so.

You need to be more careful in your first trimester than in the later weeks as apparently alcohol can affect specific points in neuro development in the 1st trimester.

I was 22 weeks at Christmas and had a small glass of champagne and a small glass of wine spread across the day with plenty of water in between and of course on a full stomach it being Christmas day.

le42 · 05/12/2018 08:20

I had a small mulled wine the other day as a treat and during pregnancy I had half a glass of champagne in Paris... I think it’s fine in small amounts occasionally

Sexnotgender · 05/12/2018 08:21

I probably wouldn’t pre 12 weeks but afterwards I would. I’m 33 weeks and have had the occasional small glass of wine.

Crimbobimbo · 05/12/2018 08:22

I have done.

Saucysusieisinbed · 05/12/2018 08:22

I love red wine and read and read about this. The risks are if you are streamlining vodka not having the odd one. I had a small red three tunes throughout all pregnancies. My third maybe more as I was cracking up by that point.

Read all the facts and make an informed descions

brookshelley · 05/12/2018 08:23

I wouldn't, especially not in the first trimester.

I don't see the point of half a glass of champagne anyway.

PineconeK · 05/12/2018 08:23

Wow that was reassuring! Rationally I know 100ml of champagne does not = FASD or miscarriage but I was worried about being in the first trimester. I think 10 weeks is beyond the critical development window anyway, but googling just makes for anxiety++

I didn't have a drink until I was out of the first trimester, but if its only one I doubt its going to cause any problems.

LiquoricePickle · 05/12/2018 08:24

I wouldn't, but I doubt there would be any problem.

I'm going to be 21 weeks and I'll probably have a piece of Christmas pudding

NataliaOsipova · 05/12/2018 08:29

It’s fine. As a consultant said to me, women have been drinking in early pregnancy since time immemorial (people didn’t find out they were pregnant until a lot later). A bottle a day wouldn’t be advisable; a glass now and again will be fine.

italianwifey · 05/12/2018 08:36

Sorry if this is a bit off topic but @liquoricepickle can we not have Christmas pudding?? I didn’t realise and haven’t eaten any yet but what is the risk there?

INeedNewShoes · 05/12/2018 08:38

Christmas pudding tends to be heavy on the brandy; same with Christmas cake.

petra22 · 05/12/2018 08:47

Well obviously the chances of doing any harm are minimal but why would you even risk it?

PineconeK · 05/12/2018 08:47

Oh I'm having the pudding. It serves 12 though and has 60ml of rum in it, so 5ml a portion. Much of which will burn off in it's two steamings.

I think the shop bought microwave ones are quite boozy though as they contain more alcohol and they aren't steamed, so barely any alcohol is removed.
