Constantly feel like I'm doing something wrong during this pregnancy. The other day, I got a subway (Italian BMT) which contained salami, pepperoni and ham. It was toasted but not enough, I then get told on the NHS site that you shouldn't eat salami or pepperoni cold due to the risk of toxoplasmosis. I just feel like I can't do anything right at the moment Sad Sad everyday I'm worrying about something different and now this

I’m sure it’ll be fine. The risk of each individual piece of salami is infinitesimal. Talk to your midwife if you’re anxious x

lljkk · 25/11/2018 21:39

I would wager the quality/type served in Subway will be cooked not high price fermented/cured versions. I suspect you're pretty safe.

Plus most people have had toxoplasmosis before they were pg. Can't catch it again.

Torsz · 25/11/2018 21:40

I must admit I've had a few of these! I figured it gets pretty hot under the grill and so should be okay?! Although now I'm questioning myself 😂

Pebblespony · 25/11/2018 21:41

I'm pregnant and eat Italian bmt all the time. I reckon it's fine, its toasted etc. I also regularly have carbonara and hollandaise.

LL83 · 25/11/2018 21:42

It is my understanding the reason you avoid certain foods is to reduce risk of food poisoning. If you haven't been ill then you are fine. You'll know for next time. How often have you had salami and not had toxoplasmosis?

Try not to feel bad about it. Easy done. Main thing to avoid is pate and Mr whippy ice cream apparently.

StormcloakNord · 25/11/2018 21:42

I feel like the NHS need to revise the content they have regarding what you can and "cannot" eat during pregnancy.

Something highlighting how small the chances are of the things they warn against for people not bright enough to come to that conclusion on their own.

Bigonesmallone3 · 25/11/2018 21:43

Ul be fine, people have done much worse in pregnancy, u live and learn, now u know u can avoid it if u wish

lljkk · 25/11/2018 21:54

toxop is asymptomatic in many (?most) healthy people. You'd never know you had it.

The NHS pages say that only cured meats are a problem, cooked meats aren't risk of toxop. What are the odds that Subway uses the more expensive cured ones (instead of cheap longer shelf life cooked ones). I'd go for zero odds on that one.

it's my first time being pregnant so I am abit of a mess when it comes to all this and feel like I am literally following everything by the book. maybe I am being abit over the top, so I apologize in that case. but i just feel every week there's something ive done wrong that potentially could put baby at harm and it's all quite stressful.

Ooo you’ll be absolutely fine, don’t give it another thought. Flowers

Bigonesmallone3 · 25/11/2018 22:25

Chill out and enjoy it

Firsttimemum121 · 25/11/2018 22:37

Can I recommend the book Expecting Bettet by Emily Oster? She is American so some of the restrictions are slightly different, but she basically goes through all the stats and real risks surrounding things like food and medications that are “banned” in pregnancy. From what I remember it seems that the only genuine risks come from smoking and alcohol - it massively helped me chill out and puts things into perspective!

Angharad07 · 26/11/2018 10:27

Well, I’m 38+5 weeks pregnant and didn’t realise I couldn’t eat salami or pepperoni and have been eating it the whole way through. I also gave in and had some pâté two days ago because pregancy is a long shift and I’ve been craving it the whole way through. I wouldn’t worry. No one can stick to the guidelines perfectly and it doesn’t mean something bad will definitely happen to your baby if you don’t, they’re just there for precaution.

On the other hand, if you were smoking 20 a day with a bottle of wine then I’d understand!

Unless youre smoking 40 a day, drinking heavily or injesting illegal substances then I would try not to worry too much about it all.

TheSubtleKnifeAndFork · 26/11/2018 11:53

Don't worry OP, at least you know for next time and the risk really is teeny tiny.

FWIW I have eaten uncooked salami a couple of times because I just totally forgot. It's not worth stressing over, honestly.

If you want to eat cured meats at home you can freeze them for three days before thawing and eating them, that sorts out any issues.

Spam88 · 26/11/2018 11:58

Ah we've all been there OP. I was halfway through a pepperami (don't judge me, I NEEDED it) when I remembered I wasn't supposed to eat them... I still scoffed the rest because it was so bloody good. The chances of becoming ill are very small, so please just put it out of your mind. We all do our best but slip ups happen.

As for pregnancy being fun, not so sure about that one 😂

Pebblespony · 26/11/2018 12:14

"Pregnancy is fun"- said no-one. Ever.

Firsttimemum121 · 26/11/2018 12:39

Thanks all. I'll defo look into that book as well! Woke up this morning with a banging headache and a sore throat. Don't know whether that's just funny timing or not due to the weather! I'm looking forward to the end already and I'm only just half way through Confused

DorothyLNaySayers · 26/11/2018 12:40

Yeah, no. Pregnancy is not supposed to be fun. Grin

TheSubtleKnifeAndFork · 26/11/2018 15:30

@Spam88 I think peperami OK as they're pasteurised (and don't even need to be kept in the fridge). Although don't quote me, but I'd think if they contained anything that could be bad for you they'd definitely need refrigeration.

Bluntness100 · 26/11/2018 15:33

Gosh I come from an Italian family and didn't know about this guide line and didn't know about it 21 years ago and pregnant. I've not got a healthy 21 year old daughter and stuffed myself with salami etc. I'd chill.

And agree, pregnancy isn't fun. I think you need to manage your expectations there. 😁

Firsttimemum121 · 26/11/2018 15:46

ha ha ha. okay maybe used the wrong word when i said fun! but not as stressful as this! thanks all x x

@TheSubtleKnifeAndFork I did try finding out if they were ok (I mean they're so processed...) because I'd bought a pack of 5, but I couldn't find a conclusive answer so I reluctantly let my DH have them 😒
