How many nappies?

firsttimemum090 · 16/11/2018 07:21

How many nappies do I need for a newborn? What sizes should I buy? How many should I buy in larger sizes? Would like tohave a few options sorted so we're not caught out in the middle of the night. Is own brand alright or better to spend more on Pampers? xx

With DS we only bought 2 large packs of size 0 pampers. We didn’t want to stock pile for a few reason. Baby may be allergic to the brand, size might be wrong to start, you might not like the brand, you won’t know how long you’ll need one size.
In the end DS was 5 weeks early and we had to buy premature nappies which barely any where sold! We didn’t end up using our pre bought size 0s till he was about 6/8 weeks old.
I know someone that bought so many size 0s with her first baby she was able to keep them for her next 2 children!

myotherbagisgucci · 16/11/2018 07:28

I've always ever bought Asda's little angels. Before DD was born I had pre bought a couple packs of size 0 and size 1. All these were used, but they do grow quickly, so I wouldn't over buy the small sizes.

She's now nearly 11 months and has been in size 4 since she was 5/6 months old. Xx

Youvegotafriendinme · 16/11/2018 07:28

Sorry, regarding brand. It’s something that is a total personal preference. We only used pampers till he was about 6 months old and I started trying other brands. The only other brand we liked were Asda’s pull ups.

Lauren83 · 16/11/2018 07:33

We have always used Aldi or Morrisons own, have used free samples of pampers etc but not found them any better, DS grew out of the first size really quickly so don't stock up too much, he was in size 5 from 9 months

BertieBotts · 16/11/2018 07:36

Buy size 1 and 2 from a few brands and see what you like? We only used ize 1 for about 4 weeks.

BertieBotts · 16/11/2018 07:39

I would say if you make sure you have around 150 nappies on hand that will be enough for 2-4 weeks, depending how much your LO goes. You can always get more later, the shops don't shut when babies are born Wink

daisy877 · 16/11/2018 07:40

Depends how big your baby is I had a 10lb baby and she's already out of newborn and she's 3 weeks old tomorrow x

kayakingmum · 16/11/2018 07:43

I've got such sting strong feeling about Pampers. In my experience they are absolutely rubbish. When I (and other family members) have used them they leak!

Nappies from Lidl are far better. Just get a few new born baby nappies. When he/shes starts to grow out of them get a bag in the next size up.

Eeeeek2 · 16/11/2018 07:43

I bought 2 big packs of size 1 for my ds, haven't bought anymore for dd who will arrive soon.

It depends on the size and shape of your dc on how long they'll stay in a size and what brands work.

PirateWeasel · 16/11/2018 07:51

We completely overestimated how many newborn sized ones we'd need and ended up giving away four packs! DS was almost 9lbs at birth and put on weight really fast so we were into size 2 by six weeks! We tried a mixture of various brands and the only ones we didn't get on with were sainsburys. Pampers are our favourite though.

Spam88 · 16/11/2018 07:57

About 10 nappies a day. I'd just get two packs of size 1s. Own brand are absolutely fine (I tried pampers and they leaked bloody everywhere) and far more sensibly priced! All the different brands have a slightly different fit so you'll probably find some work better for your baby than others, so best not to stockpile too much.

allthegoodnamesalreadytaken · 16/11/2018 08:25

We averaged around 10 in a 24 hour period during the new born stage. We've always used pampers from the beginning and it's been absolutely fine

OutPinked · 16/11/2018 08:27

I use reusable nappies but I got a free pack of Pampers with the Emmas Diary pack so put that in the hospital bag. They’re RUBBISH. They caused so many leaks it’s untrue, not fit for purpose and they stink too. We used Aldi’s nappies from the second day until I started to feel better and they are far superior.

anniehm · 16/11/2018 08:29

Unless you live in the back of beyond, buy two packets of a branded newborn nappy, you can always go out for more if dc is smaller. Contrary to much written, most women can get out and about quite quickly- I was in Asda the next day buying clothes as dd was over a pound lighter than expected (and I wanted to go out). They even deliver these days of course

Mhcb · 16/11/2018 09:11

I have only bought 2 packs of pampers, a size 1 and a size 2. I decided to go for a brand I can easily get hold of in my local shops, I didn't want to over buy as may need to change brand's if I don't like or my little boy doesn't get on with them. I have 4 weeks to go and just going to buy a small newborn pack too just incase he smaller than expected when arrives.

daisy877 · 16/11/2018 09:27

@kayakingmum I used pampers 5 years ago and they were terrible !!
How ever I have bought the new pampers and think they are brilliant, although Aldi and lidl are just as good and a third of the price x

theycallmebabydriver · 16/11/2018 09:33

I'd buy enough size 0 to get you through a couple of days then see where you go from there. Your partner / other support people will do so many trips to the shops in the early days it's unreal (also, Amazon prime is your friend with a new baby). Brand wise we have used different ones at different times as they don't all fit the same, we used naty first, then some asda ones, then pampers and also sometimes use reusables.

BertieBotts · 17/11/2018 09:00

I never used size 0, size 1 was weeny enough. Even size 2 was fine from birth.

firsttimemum090 · 17/11/2018 14:24

Thank you for the replies, will pop round to Aldi xx

Just buy two packs. There's no point in stockpiling.

CrazyOldBagLady · 17/11/2018 14:32

No need to stock pile nappies, although our son pooed a lot as a newborn. Maybe 10 nappies a day? It was a full carrier bag every day. The shops will be open and you may well want somewhere relatively undaunting to take baby out like a short supermarket run. I’d also try a few brands to see which you like. We didn’t see much difference in brands and now just use Lidl or Aldi.

CrazyOldBagLady · 17/11/2018 14:33

Oh whilst we are on the subject I would recommend getting a box of water wipes rather than try with the cotton wool. Cotton wool is no match for that first miconium poo (or any really!)

comradelouise · 17/11/2018 14:41

I like Tesco own brand nappies - they're sized more generously than Pampers and a lot cheaper unless you get Pampers on a special offer

Gillian1980 · 17/11/2018 14:47

Dd was 6lb and I think we used 2 packs on size 0, a few packs of size 1 and quite a lot of size 2.
We bought a selection of brands to see which suited her best and have ended up mostly using Asda and Aldi ones. Tesco and Pampers didn’t suit her st all.

BertieBotts · 17/11/2018 15:16

We got a big box of the amazon brand (Mama bear) wipes. Good value. I don't see the point of water wipes, if you are that worried about chemicals just use washcloths and water.

I did find it helpful to have a big stock of nappies for the first few weeks because the thought of leaving the house was a bit scary.
