28+3 placenta previa likely section at 37wks

Any tips for me please?

I'm 28+3 with placenta previa. Had a scan yesterday to check placenta yesterday - well and truely covering the cervix and in the sonographers words "there's no way that will move" although she did follow it up by saying watch now i have said that it will.

I am consultant led anyway so discussed briefly with them following the appointment. At the moment they are very much saying wait until scan at 36wks to be sure but i'm guessing the sonographer knows what she's talking about.

So, any tips for things i should be doing now? With the section in mind i have just under 9wks to go.

Also any advice / tips on a plannned section is welcome too.

@Tadda yes our due date for the expected c-section is very similar. I'm hoping I can find out the exact planned date soon as my husband still works in London from Monday to Friday so we must ensure he can fly back for the birth
@Rarfy yes they can bring you in for bedrest even if you had no bleeds or anything. This is because I think as the baby grows inside the chances of bleeding increases. I also live too far in case I bleed heavily. Having said this I never had a bleed with my daughter so hopefully it won't happen this time either. Yesterday they let me out for a couple of hours to the small shopping centre next to the hospital. It was lovely!
At the weekend midwives were mentioning my iron levels being just below the threshold so an iron infusion is a possibility here too. I never had one with my first, in fact my iron levels were very good back then. I wonder what is the reason it's different this time.

Rarfy · 03/12/2018 20:45

Oh i didnt know that! Im 20-30mins from nearest hospital. 32wks tomo. Suppose you have to do whatever is best for you and baby.

Had a bad night last night backache and stomache ache all through the night. Hoping i sleep better tonight.

Are you guys on wards or have your own rooms? It's good you were allowed to leave for a wander.

Ive been on iron tablets about 4wks due to being borderline, i sometimes think that's what gives me a dodgey tummy.

Officially 2 wks left at work tomo. Hoping i can stick it out.

I'm on a ward with four but had two lovely ladies here for last two weeks who left today (we swapped numbers!)- will miss them but others seem nice too- two weeks tomorrow cSection now so halfway through my 'time''-
Risk of bleeding with complete praevia cSection really high, my iron stores were at 11 so had two infusions so far and now at 178- blood needs to be as 'store healthy' as possible and pregnancy always whips it a bit low to pass to baby.
I can't leave hospital because I've had three a abruptions, stomach heaviness, pelvic pressure and pain can get really strong really quickly- plus still slightly brown bleeding - so really high risk - but if I didnt I could imagine they'd let me put for a wander too (really missing Dd1...but come in every couple of days, it's difficult arranging everything and DH having to do both roles at home a new one- cos I'm a bit of a control freak and usually do everything!)
After baby here we've booked a private room for 5 days - would have spent nearly 6 weeks in hospital by then - but I'd go mental locked in a room in my own until then!

Rarfy · 04/12/2018 20:30

Aww @tadda shame (but good for them) your fellow inmates have managed to escape. Lovely yous have struck up that bond. Not long now hopefully it will go quick.

Must be so difficult not getting to see much of dp and dd but as long as you are all getting along ok and baby is safe and well thats the most you can hope for at this point. Wow as if your iron was that low you must have felt like shit. Glad they are gettint it back up to where it needs to be.

I have had pressure down there. Almost feels like ive been kicked in my lady bits. I did mention it to midwife but she said everyone gets it Confused

Been for 32 weeks scan today. No sign of placenta moving. Been giving provisional date of 9 January for section.

Been told it is likely i will have to have it done under general which has come as a huge shock so bit of a state today!

Have another scan at 36wks for one last check then will be steroids in run up to section date if still needed. In an ideal world it will move but even the consultant said today it wont.

@rarfy it sounds like you may have the same as me, mine grade 4 complete previa -did they mention a condition to you called placenta increta (google)? They can't really test for it, but (this may vary depending on different trust protocol etc) that would be the only reason they would take me from a spinal block to a general anaesthetic and only if it was discovered during delivery as it becomes a more serious operation and the only way to stop the bleed- that's why they won't take me any further than 37 weeks also -no risk to baby as she will already be born, but that is the only time they can really see what's going on behind the scenes. Better to have a load of pre arranged specialists in the room than it turn into an emergency, even though I'm already in hospital really can't risk delaying anything

@Rarfy 9th January, how exciting! Have they given you an explanation for the need of GA? Would you need to go in on bed rest before? I've been given a c-section date: next week Friday the 14th. I'm nervous but looking forward to being over it. Will be 38 weeks, just like with my daughter...I'm on iron tablets since Tuesday, no iron infusion needed I've been told. My iron levels are 10.5 and they would like to see it above 11. I'm in a semi-private room, since yesterday I have a 4th lady here now but she is due to go home tomorrow morning.
@Tadda your iron levels are now 178? Wow. My daughter got very upset yesterday when she had to leave me here after her visit, she had to be pealed off me. She is struggling a little bit but it's natural a suppose...her Nana is brilliant (she moved in with her, lives next door to us) but 'nothing is done like mummy does'. I'm missing her badly.

Tadda · 06/12/2018 19:09

@KitKat good luck for Friday Flowers ! My iron stores went to 5 at one point and have always had trouble absorbing iron (deficiency anaemia since 19) and because they're expecting the blood loss scenario better to get infusions for me - but yeah I was just as shocked when they said 178!!!

Rarfy · 06/12/2018 19:18

Placenta is completely covering cervix and anterior so coming up towards my belly button i guess. They said a general is safer to control the bleeding if it happens. They can control my blood pressure whilst under and if intervention is needed crack straight on with it. Hysterectomy was mentioned but im hoping they just have tp mention it in a worst case scenario sense. I think she was saying that would be the last resort.

Tbh she was set on really covering it all at 36wk scan so i only got snippets of info when asking but yes 9 jan it is. I was hoping to be first on list but as i am a complex case i have to be second.

Oh 14 December wow that will soon come round. You two are so close together. Hpw exciting. As you say, bet you cant wait!

No bed rest advised just told no nookie on the consultants words lol!

@kitkatsz23 just realised your section is tomorrow. Best of luck i really hope everything goes as well as can be and you get gorgeous cuddles with your new arrival.

kitkatsz23 · 13/12/2018 18:12

@Rarfy Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear you had a bleed this morning. How are you feeling now on the ward? Has the bleed completely stopped? Have they administered steroids for baby's lungs? I had to have steroids on Wednesday as the hospital has a new policy and all elective c-section patients under 39 weeks are given steroids. I'll be 38+3 tomorrow. It turned me into a crazy woman and was up all night. I wasn't given steroids with my daughter...yes, my c-section is tomorrow, I'm third on the list so expected to be in between 11-12am assuming no emergencies before me. I'm nervous and excited at the same time. I just hope it will all go well and that he is healthy. Thank you for your well wishes.

@Tadda Thank you. How are you doing this week? Is the c-Section date still the 19th?

Rarfy · 13/12/2018 19:29

You will have to give us an announcement when you are feeling well enough and he is here.

Yes i had steroids today and got my next one due tomorrow then im covered i think. Its a relatively small bleed. Bit of a gush at the time but on my pad like a period more pink than red really.

Theyre not overly concerned tbh. They said once it stops i have to be blood free 24hours then can go home. Chances are i will have another similar bleed in two - three weeks but thats pretty close to my planned section anyway.

Baby was great on the monitor so thats the main thing for me. I feel completely fine. Was wondering why not tired as it happened at 3.30am and not had any sleep since but maybe its the steroids?

Very exciting about tomo. Will be thinking of u.

OP posts:
kitkatsz23 · 13/12/2018 21:22

@Rarfy That is definitely the steroids giving you some extra boostSmile Mind yourself. Fingers crossed you can go home in 24 hours. Great that baby is well and happy! Will you be able to take it very easy for the next 2-3weeks, just resting?

I will give a little update tomorrow/at the weekend. Thanks again for the well wishes, off to listen to some mindful c-section meditation and try to sleep a bit.

Rarfy · 13/12/2018 21:30

Yes ill just get family to run around after me haha. Great. Take care. Look forward to an update.

Baby boy arrived safely on Friday. All went well, no bleeding thank God so no blood transfusion. It did take a bit longer though due to unforeseen things found inside: my lower part of the uterus was grown into some abdominal tissue and my left ovary was grown onto my tube and other things had to be 'mobilised' inside as my consultant said. I'm so glad it's all over and I'm on the road to recovery.
@Rarfy Are you at home now? How are you?
@Tadda How are you doing in the hospital? Ready for Wednesday?

Rarfy · 18/12/2018 06:17

Huge congratulations @kitkatsz23. What fabulous news. How big was he and what have you called him? So pleased for you! Sounds like the op was ok bar the mpbilising but at least everything is back where it should be now.

I am still lightly bleeding so am having yo stay in until delivery (9 jan!). Having a scan Christmas eve. If by some miracle the bleeding has stopped and placenta has shifted i will be allowed home but they think its unlikely. Really struggled yesterday. Missing being at home but i know i have to do whats safest and it will all be worth it.

Just wondering how you are @Rarfy!?

kitkatsz23 · 08/01/2019 11:33

@Rarfy Thank you!! We gave him an Irish name, we are in Ireland. He is called Ruaidhrí. How are you? All set for tomorrow? Have you spent the Christmas and New Year in the hospital or did they let you home? I'll be thinking of you tomorrow!! Good luck! It will all be good.Smile

@Taddda Has your baby arrived safely? How are you?

Taddda · 08/01/2019 13:57

Hey @kitkat ! Congratualtions!!

Baby (Ruby) arrived Emergency Cs on 13th December - had another big bleed in hospital so lucky I was there and we did get to 36 +1 so not to far off 19th planned Cs date - she was a little poorly (mucus, low blood sugars, weight loss and jaundice) so had a few days in NICU - but made a good recovery and we were home just before xmas :)

I'm having a bit of a time recovering - lost alot of blood during op, got an infection and possibly nerve damage so on antibiotics - but could have been worse so just trying to take it easy - but so glad to be home with my baby girls and their both doing really well!!
