28+3 placenta previa likely section at 37wks

Any tips for me please?

I'm 28+3 with placenta previa. Had a scan yesterday to check placenta yesterday - well and truely covering the cervix and in the sonographers words "there's no way that will move" although she did follow it up by saying watch now i have said that it will.

I am consultant led anyway so discussed briefly with them following the appointment. At the moment they are very much saying wait until scan at 36wks to be sure but i'm guessing the sonographer knows what she's talking about.

So, any tips for things i should be doing now? With the section in mind i have just under 9wks to go.

Also any advice / tips on a plannned section is welcome too.

@rarfy the main hospital down the road is massive and has everything! (M n S, Costa, whsmith etc)...unfortunately the maternity bit is separate half hour away! There's a little newsagent and a cafe on lower ground tho- I might ask today if I could just nip down and grab a coffee (fresh air).

Because I'm still bleeding (small amounts of brown loss now atm tho) they've said not to go anywhere but I'm sure still in the building is fine- good idea x

And your right about the monitoring - they really are just constantly there and checking everything- plus when I spoke to consultant and they said if I have another abruption it'll only take minutes to deliver her it really did put everyone's mind at ease- think we'd all just be in a constant state of panic if at home (even though I just want to be cuddled up on sofa getting ready for Xmas with DD! Go to think of the bigger picture!)

If I can get this pain (and constipation!) Under control and feel more comfortable going to try and do exactly what you said and just relax until baby here- online Xmas shopping getting sent to MIL (it's DH birthday on 2nd Dec so have made some cardsat funky pidgeon, want to get him something nice from Dd x)

Rarfy · 22/11/2018 09:16

Yes internet shopping sounds like a plan as does a walk for a coffee. You are in the right place if anything happens but fingers crossed you will be fine. Thats so reassuring knowings its literally a matter of minutes. That is all i would need to know.

Do you have any names for her?

OP posts:
Tadda · 22/11/2018 09:33

Scarlett, Ruby, Amber, Harley top 4 atm (Rae Middle name) x

Rarfy · 22/11/2018 10:41

Love then all! Amber was on my list until dp vetoed it but its beautiful. Love Ruby too and Harley but already have a Harley in the family so can't use.

Rae is fantastic. Amber Rae and Ruby Rae have a real ring to them!

Had a really scary conversation with consultant yesterday about c-section with placenta pravia (there having a proper look at the site at the moment, also calling specialist in because they don't know for sure what this lump in my uterine wall is- they did think fibroid, then looks like a contraction inside the muscle wall....) now words like haematoma, hysterectomy, haemorrhage, general anaesthetic are being used.....also everytime I mention c-section at 37 weeks it's getting a 'well, we will do out best to get you to 37 weeks but we're happy that baby is doing well enough now if we do need to deliver.....)

Getting a bit scary this.....:(

Rarfy · 23/11/2018 11:15

I think they are right in that baby would be fine delivered now i guess the issue.is with where the placenta is they could catch it when carrying out the section.

If they are aware of haemorrage risk they will be prepared. Maybe she will be coming sooner than you think?

Try not to worry. I always reassure myself with tales of twins born in the twenties and doing absolutely fine. Do they have a rough idea of herof her

OP posts:
Rarfy · 23/11/2018 11:17

Weight? That would reassure me too. Just keep in minf they have to give you the worst case scenario and all that matters is you and this new baby get through it all in good health.

It does sound like they are being thorough and know what theyre talking about which is reassuring. Thinking of you tho. I know none of the above will stop you worrying.

At last scan the est. baby was weighing in at @ 5lbs, that was on Monday, and will prob gain about 1/2lb a week- I've got another scan on Wednesday and a plan now for c-section on with Dec all being well.

They're going to give me an iron infusion and this weekend just to build my blood store levels up a bit, plus and extra lot of steroid injections the weekend before section, just to make sure baby is in best possible health as still a little early and may need some help with her lungs -

This is all assuming no more bleeds, baby continues to do well etc- so hopefully that will all go to plan!!! X

Consultant not to worried about possibility of complications as apparently (if there can be one!) I've got a good 'placenta pravia' as it's still posteria even though covering cervix - if it was anteria it would be alot more complicated for cSection - so positive! !? X

(Ruby Rae now gone top of the list for names :) - surname Kelly and can't get the 'R Kelly' link out of my head - just made us laugh- but really love the name now xx)

Rarfy · 23/11/2018 17:12

@Tadda love love love Ruby Rae. What date have they given you?

Sounds like a good size and the iron infusion and steroids is a great idea too. Yes posterior is probs better because its at the back so thatsa bonus if you have to take some good news from it haha.

Good to hear some good-ish news. Hope you're taking good care of yourself.

Ohhell RKelly hahaha altho he does have some good songs! I nearly went for billie jo and surname beginning with b and then realised initials would be b j b surname. I was like nooooo!!!!

Tadda · 23/11/2018 17:28

17th December, they'll give the steroids the Fri/Sat before- Seems like it's a long way away but this week gone quite quick-
Didn't think this would be happening on the run up to Xmas but hey ho -
Be great to get us all home together for Xmas day xx

Rarfy · 23/11/2018 17:44

I was just goimg to say plenty of time to still get home and settled for Christmas @Tadda.

When you look at it like that - how exciting!

OP posts:
Tadda · 23/11/2018 18:21

They said they want to keep us in for 5 days after recovery- so hopefully 22nd/23rd xx

Rarfy · 23/11/2018 18:41

Oh heck cutting it fine but gives you chance to recover a little from the op hopefully and still home for the big day.

OP posts:

How's it going @Tadda?

OP posts:
Tadda · 01/12/2018 03:05

Hi @rarfy :) Hanging in there- how's things with you? Two weeks down in hospital, 3 to go....cSection now planned for the with so hopefully she'll stay put until then.

Had scan on Wednesday confirming its complete Previa so totally covering cervix, baby has put on 13ozs in a little less than two weeks tho and their really happy she's plodding along nicely which is really comforting to know nothings really effecting her, it's me they seem a little more concerned about.
My Blood pressure really low- pressure pain and dagger type abdo pain being managed by pain killers, iron stores are non existent so getting infusions to try and build that up-.... bleeding still there but nothing their concerned about - changes from light brown to small clots on wiping but just keeping an eye on (generally feel a bit crappy! Plus missing DD1 like crazy - but everyone coming in tomorrow, I just have to remember I can't bend down to pick her up, almost impossible but did it without thinking last time and nearly passed out)
Trying to stay positive! It's a small amount of time for a much bigger picture and definately in the right place for now x
Had a student interview me yesterday which was funny - apparently only 4 in 1000 with previa have what I have- never been one to follow the crowd :) !
I really can't fault the care I'm getting here though the midwives, specialists have been amazing so far, just constantly checking everything- even the cleaners stop for a little ' How you doing today' chat in the morning! It does make a difference xx

Tadda · 01/12/2018 03:07

(CSection on 19th - not 'with'- bless predictive text :) )

Mummykaz90 · 01/12/2018 04:55

Hi op. I don't have placenta previa but u do have low lying placenta and baby is breech at the moment at 28 weeks. Just wondered how you were getting on. I'm praying she turned and placenta moves by my next scan at 36 weeks. But also slightly worried that I have to wait until then for scan considering my 2 previous pregnancies I have gone into labour at 35 and 36 weeks x

Rarfy · 01/12/2018 06:50

@Tadda it's good to hear you are getting along ok. Trust you to be 1 of the 4 Grin suppose someone has to be. Hopefully all be a light hearted story to tell your gorgeous dd when she finally arrives safely. It must be nice to have a date planned? Some sort of end point!

I know the bleedings not much but you are definitely in the right place if you have any at all so i'm glad they're taking good care of you. You will be part of the fixtures and fittings now!

Hope you enjoy a visit with family today, something to look forward to. Just be careful.

OP posts:
Rarfy · 01/12/2018 06:55

@Mummykaz90 mine was breech at 28wks too. Got a scan next week so will see if that's changed but because of where placenta is it's probably unlikely.

Hopefully if you have eight weeks until next scan it will give yours chance to move bit worrying mind if u have laboured earlier than that in previous pregnancies. I wonder if you could request an earlier scan?

Can the midwife check with their hands?

I'm doing ok but bloody knackered now. Feel like im walking aroind with a weight in my foof hahaha midwife reckons its the extra pressure from the placenta. I'll be 32 wks Tuesday so only about 5wks left at that point unless anything changes.

Trying to stick it out at work. Just over 2 wks left and office based but i dunno what makes the aches and pains worse sitting too long or standing too long. Shattered too - dont sleep well because legs ache from hips to ankle when laid down. What a whingebag! Apart from all that everything is amazing and i can't wait to bring this baby girl into the world!

Oh god the iron tablets too -give me a proper dodgey stomache which then panics me.

How are the iron infusions @tadda?

kitkatsz23 · 01/12/2018 17:24

Hello Ladies, can I join you? I have been put on bed rest in hospital since yesterday, currently 36 weeks with placenta preavia. This is my second time having placenta preavia (second baby) but this time in a different country. My daughter was born at 38 weeks at Queen Charlotte's in 2013, that time I managed with no hospitalisation as we literally lived 2 minutes away from the hospital. This time around I had to come in as we live 40 minutes away...both times I managed with no bleeds so very lucky in that sense...possible c-section date is between 14-17 December, not decided yet. I hope you are all having a relatively ok weekendSmile

Tadda · 02/12/2018 04:48

@rarfy Iron infusions seem to be ok (although I seem to get this really weird taste/smell sensation while having them!?) - but since stopping the iron tablets, constipation seems to have eased which is Literally (!) a MASSIVE relief :) - I'm sure it aggravated some of the bleeding -
One more infusion next week- it might take a few weeks for it to show any better results on my bloods - but their cross matching me every three days so hopefully will show a difference, it's all in there then doing its thing anyway :)
Hi @kitkats ! (A fellow inmate :) ) x Hope your doing ok, your cSection date roughly the same time as mine - on the final countdown now so hope you manage to get some rest and thing go ok and as planned!

Rarfy · 02/12/2018 14:19

So have they taken you in just for having it @kitkatsz23? I didnt even know that was a possibility. My midwife did say last week they may put me on bedrest. Will have to see what happens.

Oh thats good @tadda. Is it like the metallicy taste you get when first pregnant? Hopefully your bloods will take a turn for the better soon.

OP posts:
Tadda · 02/12/2018 15:48

@rarfy they might take you in closer to your planned cSection date if you start showing any potential problems/complications (bleeding, pain, any sign baby is being effected such as growth etc)- but you might just be lucky and have none of these at all- according to the docs I've spoken to many people are just fine.
There's a few different stages of pravia, marginal, (which means only just v close to cervix), partial (about half covering) and complete (fully covered) - each have increasing risk levels in terms of bleeding or ruptures-
I was only taken and kept in because I'd been in twice before at 27 weeks with bleeding, but a severe rupture at 32 where if I hadn't had stopped heavy bleeding or baby was showing any signs of distress they would have delivered her.

Luckily the bleeding slowed, loads of tests showing she's not being effected and if they kept me in and monitored they could try and get me to 37 weeks (I'm nearly 35 now and every day grateful she's keeping in there safe!)
I'm pretty sure if bleeding was to get heavy again they're confident that she's doing well enough to deliver her now instead of waiting, although I'd rather she stayed out till the planned date (as much as I want to get us home, 35 weeks still seems a little too early, and chances at she's be kept in Nicu anyway x
Countdown now xx

Rarfy · 02/12/2018 16:27

From the sounds of my last scan i have complete praevia. The sonographer said sometimes it's just at the edge or whatever but my cervix is bang in the middle of the placenta. Having said that ive had a really heavy feeling between my legs for a couple of weeks and just noticed on friday it seems to have eased a bit so im wondering if it is moving.

Yes you are right she is best off inside and developing as she should whilst everything is good and thats a really positive way of looking at it! You're doing so well!
