So I had no idea I wasn't allowed to eat hot dogs 😱 and I had one at the local firework display and now I'm kind of freaking out? Should I let my midwife know?

25 or so years ago the advice was blue cheese, liver and pate. We all survived. My obstetrician told me a gin was fine as well!

@PennyMordauntsLadyBrain

I was on the Reddit pregnancy board during my last pregnancy, and saw a lot of panicking as the American “rules” seem to be a lot more restrictive.

One woman started a post saying she was travelling to Scotland, and would she be ok to eat the food there? The UK contingent had to explain that Scottish women do infact get pregnancy and continue to eat while living there.

When I was pregnant my golden rule was, ONLY look at the NHS website. There are SO MANY American rules that are way more restrictive and ridiculous, and it's partly because their food hygiene regs are laxer than ours. Just stick to the NHS website.

Given the age of this thread we can just ask her how her 3 year old child is doing.

When I had bad morning sickness over 40 years ago kosher hot dog sausages were one of the few things I could keep down. I don't know why I even tried eating them because they were not something I had eaten before or since.

WotsitMum · 07/01/2022 08:26

I have craved hot dogs in this pregnancy, i cant count how many ive eaten, never knew it was on the no no list, i will continue to eat them esspecialy the ikea ones 😍

BertieBotts · 07/01/2022 08:56

They aren't on the no list unless you live in America.

Pregnancy No 1: “eat liver, at least twice a week, it is full of good stuff and Baby Needs It”. Fit healthy baby (now DS31)

Pregnancy No 2: “Don’t even look at liver, or any products that have been in the same van as liver. It will kill your baby. Unprocessed/pasteurised cheese? Eat lots, full of calcium and good things, Baby Needs It”. (Now DD28).

France at the time “You must have a glass of red wine daily for the baby’s health”. French friend has fit healthy baby.

I have no idea where/when/why Honey became a problem.

Etc etc etc.

While it makes sense to be cautious sometimes and I do understand how emotionally difficult it is to break the ‘rules’ when you are carrying a baby I personally wouldn’t panic over a hotdog.

HotMummaSummer · 07/01/2022 09:03

It's my second pregnancy and I've relaxed a lot more. Been having a little soft cheese, occasional wine/mulled wine and I've had sushi. I'm 30 weeks now and have had no issues.

I've been more worried about catching the things going around at DDs nursery! She had D&V when I was in my first trimester, luckily she avoided the hand foot and mouth. Just cold after cold after cold...

MzHz · 07/01/2022 09:11

I was told to be careful of takeaways etc, it was for food hygiene reasons

I’m sure you’re ok @MissMoodyMoo - don’t worry :)

UltraVividLament · 07/01/2022 09:13

Here's the NHS advice:

www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/keeping-well/foods-to-avoid/

No mention of hot dogs, so don't worry about it.

UltraVividLament · 07/01/2022 09:14

oh bloody hell, it's a zombie thread... 🧟‍♀️

GeraneousGiraffe · 07/01/2022 09:21

@lurker69 super harmful advice. Something that gets told to pregnant women regardless of the symptoms. Stop making people feel like they can't access healthcare.

Frazzled2207 · 07/01/2022 09:25

I never heard this

I honestly think the risk of these things is overblown. Basically you want to avoid getting food poisoning but even if you do it’s not a serious risk.

Avoid raw shellfish and probably mouldy cheese.

Magnited · 07/01/2022 09:29

After three years these should be Cold Dogs by now.

Oneearringlost · 07/01/2022 09:33

@Iaimtomisbehave1

I thought processed meat in general was a no no. Something about lysteria... but I havnt been pregnant for 5 years so I can't remember properly.
Listeria can come from unpasteurised milk, so blue cheeses etc and pates. Processed foods would not result in Listeria.
Crayzeefrog · 07/01/2022 10:03

You will be fine. Some food have a higher risk of listeria but it’s still a tiny risk.

Baked soft cheeses (including Camembert) are fine if cooked properly?

Did you know that soft whip ice cream is on the ‘not advised’ list?! I didn’t and my (perfectly fine 6mo) baby had a few servings of it!

Zombie thread.

Tbf of all the zombie topics, at least this one has a chance of still being relevant (we still have pregnant women and they still eat) Grin
