So I had no idea I wasn't allowed to eat hot dogs 😱 and I had one at the local firework display and now I'm kind of freaking out? Should I let my midwife know?

OP posts:

Well I didn’t know this either and we had hot dogs for lunch a few weeks back!

Samfaiers · 07/11/2018 21:40

No

Pebblespony · 07/11/2018 21:41

I would have no problem eating them. I'm 12 weeks.

BertrandRussell · 07/11/2018 21:43

Who said you aren't allowed to watt hot dogs?

Iaimtomisbehave1 · 07/11/2018 21:43

I thought processed meat in general was a no no. Something about lysteria... but I havnt been pregnant for 5 years so I can't remember properly.

LollyLollington · 07/11/2018 21:43

As long as they're cooked properly I don't see the issue. Never seen any nhs advice against hot dogs!

Pebblespony · 07/11/2018 21:43

Also, unless the fireworks display was a few hours ago you'd know by now if it was dodgy. Food poisoning is the risk and you'd know if you had that.

IStandWithPosie · 07/11/2018 21:43

You’re allowed to eat whatever you want!! Guidelines advise against certain things for various reasons but you’re an adult with your own mind, you get to decide what you eat. There is no “allowed”. Your midwife isn’t your mum, you don’t need to “confess”. It was a hot dog!

xyzandabc · 07/11/2018 21:44

Why can't you eat hot dogs? Not something I've ever heard of.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 07/11/2018 21:45

I’m 22 weeks and stuffed myself with a load of Camembert at a dinner party last weekend. I had a total brain fart and forgot it was on the No-No List.

It’s my second baby as well, so I had no excuse! Blush

After extensive googling, it’s obviously not ideal and I won’t be rushing to do it again, but the chances of catching listeria are pretty low.

I can hear my midwife shaking her head at me from here.

Echobelly · 07/11/2018 21:45

If you had no idea you weren't supposed to eat something, then everyone has gone years eating it while pregnant without anything terrible happening, and it's totally fine to eat it.

I bet French women don't stop eating unpasteurised cheese and Japanese women don't stop eating sushi when they're pregnant and they're fine too.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 07/11/2018 21:46

The Camembert was fucking delicious though...

WontonSoupForTheSoul · 07/11/2018 21:46

What do you think a midwife will be able to do?

dementedpixie · 07/11/2018 21:47

FFS hotdogs are not on the don't eat list. Calm down and check nhs guidance

pastabest · 07/11/2018 21:47

who has told you that you can't eat hotdogs?

I mean they are pretty revolting delicious but not on the NHS naughty list?

Anyat212 · 07/11/2018 21:48

I think that’s possibly old advice? I’m sure it just presents the risk of listeria (i.e when packaged) and if the hot dog hasn’t been cooked properly, which I’m thinking if you bought it and was hot - I’m assuming it would be okay. It’s the same with cured meats such as salami etc, the risk is there but it’s very low.

I wouldn’t worry about it Smile

spugzbunny · 07/11/2018 21:50

You can eat hotdogs! Ffs! Just check the NHS guidelines and only those! US guidelines are stricter and European more relaxed.

DwangelaForever · 07/11/2018 22:05

This is a stupid American rule, if it was cooked ok you'll be fine! I had a cinema hot dog when pregnant and it was bliss 😍

overagain · 07/11/2018 22:06

Hot dogs are fine.

Echobelly yes, french women stop eating soft mould ripened cheeses and uncooked deli meats, just like we are advised to do.

OP you are advised not to eat- uncooked mould ripened cheese regardless of whether it is pasteurised or not. Uncooked soft blue cheese, alcohol, shark, marlin. Sushi is fine if previously frozen (e.g. to sushi), uncooked deli meats such as salami and chorizo, unless previously frozen. Lion stamped eggs are fine cooked however. Pate, including vegetable and fish pates, liver.

Everything else should be in date, well cooked and usual hygiene practices follows.

BUT it's just guidance.

Angharad07 · 07/11/2018 22:13

you’ll both live through the trauma

le42 · 07/11/2018 22:30

Come on you’ll be fine! I’ve never even heard that about hot dogs... they are fully cooked meat so can’t see why they would be bad. And if you had food poisoning you’d know by now!

Doyoumind · 07/11/2018 22:38

Generally the only reason not to eat anything in pregnancy is in case you get food poisoning (yes, there are other reasons for swordfish and some other things). You aren't more likely than a non pregnant person to get food poisoning. The consequences could just be worse.

I have never heard of anyone getting food poisoning from hot dogs.

Food poisoning from any food that has been stored or prepared correctly is pretty rare.

Nothisispatrick · 07/11/2018 22:43

Oh for goodness sake. These threads come up about once a week. Just read the NHS guidelines and try to be careful. If it was a few days ago you’d know by now if you were ill.

Also Camembert is generally cooked, so it’s fine isn’t it?

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 07/11/2018 22:46

I was on the Reddit pregnancy board during my last pregnancy, and saw a lot of panicking as the American “rules” seem to be a lot more restrictive.

One woman started a post saying she was travelling to Scotland, and would she be ok to eat the food there? The UK contingent had to explain that Scottish women do infact get pregnancy and continue to eat while living there.

PBobs · 07/11/2018 22:48

Don't worry. I spent a week eating deep sea big fish when on holiday. They didn't have "English" names on the menu and I had no idea what it all was. Fish is such a rarity where I live I was just excited to eat fish. Sigh. So I'm now not eating fish for 2 weeks to balance it out.
