Nuchal measurement 3.5mm

Hi just after some advice, other people's experience. Had my 12 week scan just now, nuchal fold has come back at 3.5mm which is borderline and my head is hurting. Baby looked fine apart from this, they took my bloods to carry out the other part of the test. They will rush through so should have risk factor back on Thursday.

Anyone been through this with similar measurements?

I had a prev mmc so was stressing about that and thought today would be happy. I'm not feeling that happy sadly. They've said depending what I want to do I can ring them tomorrow and just do the cvs if I wish.

Have you seen the antenatal tests topic on here? It's quite helpful

Our NT was 5.1. 1 in 5 chance of downs Edwards or patau. Not looking good.
Had the NIPT and it came back as highly unlikely for those and now we're awaiting a scan Monday to check baby for heart problems and possibly have an amnio.

Wishing you all the best, Its a hard thing to go through.
I'd recommend ringing ARC as well. They're really good.

We had measurement of 4.7mm , the following week it dropped down to 3.6mm and CVS came back all clear for not only the three major ones but everything .

Do you know will they do a harmony test for you on the NHS?

blueberry71 · 06/11/2018 18:50

We had exactly 3.5mm with my dd. Went to a Fetal medicine unit in Birmingham women's hospital who did a thorough scan. Nuchal had dropped to 2.5mm and the consultant said everything looked normal. Decided against cvs and had another detailed scan at 20 weeks at the same place which confirmed that baby was healthy. Bloods came back 1:140 for downs and 1:360 for Edwards. Daughter was born 100% healthy. Please try not to worry too much. I know that sounds impossible at this stage but you have a good chance of everything being fine. What I would say is if we had the same results back again at the 12 week scan we would pay for the harmony test so we could have early peace of mind. Sending you lots and lots of positive thoughts. X

le42 · 06/11/2018 19:30

Sorry I should have said... I was given 1 in 85 chance with a reading of 4.7mm so yours will be considerably lower. (We were offered harmony for free so worth checking your hospital)

ShowOfHands · 06/11/2018 19:32

Ours was the same and our risk came back at 1:156

DS is 7 and perfectly healthy.

momoa80 · 06/11/2018 20:48

Thanks for the replies, no harmony test wasn't offered, just cvs or amnio. They said 3.5mm is on the cusp between normal and abnormal so I'm clutching on to that. Time will tell, I will find out the risk factor on Thursday.

Have you been referred to a Fetal medicine unit? If not I strongly recommend getting an in depth scan done as they are far more detailed than the nhs ones. The scanning machines are a lot better as well. X

momoa80 · 06/11/2018 21:16

@Blueberry71 the midwife just said they'd only refer if I wanted the cvs. She did offer to rescan me on Friday herself (different lady did my scan) the baby wasn't very cooperative today, kept jiggling and I ended up tipped right back, she took some time to measure. I am 38 so age probably a factor I'm guessing? I have had 2 healthy pregnancies albeit younger then (23 and 25), had the testing done for both children and low risk results. This baby has a different dad though. They said 3.5mm is on the top end of normal but I googled and that said lower was normal I think it was 2.8mm and under. My head is just pickled.

I had the exact same situation with my dd. The sonographer could barely get the measurements as she was in an awkward position and wriggling round lots. Maybe that has a factor in it? If the blood results do come back high risk then I highly recommend getting scanned at a Fetal medicine unit. Not sure where you are based but you could always go private if they don't have one at a nhs hospital. That is what really eased my mind without having to have the cvs done. It's consultant lead so they really know what they're talking about. Otherwise then harmony would be my second option. But obviously completely up to you. X

momoa80 · 06/11/2018 21:53

Thanks @blueberry71. I'm north so they've mentioned a Manchester hospital if I was the cvs.

I just feel in limbo, do I get excited? Do I tell people about the pregnancy? It's been such a long time to get to 12 weeks and be cautious and now this. Im a 'need to knower' so have been googling like mad trying to find answers, Thanks so much for the replies.

I have that feeling too. I'm 17+2 now and still feel that way. I've told the people we see often but not done a big announcement.

Childrenofthesun · 07/11/2018 07:43

DD2 nuchal fold measurement was also 3.5mm. Remember, this is the top of the normal range. I was ripped into high risk (1:75) by accompanying high levels of HCG in my blood. I had an amino and there were no problems with the pregnancy. DD is now a healthy 6 yo.

Childrenofthesun · 07/11/2018 07:44

pushed. Don't know where ripped came from!

blueberry71 · 07/11/2018 07:51

I would wait until you get your blood results back as they may still come back low risk. That's what they did with me. Did they say how long they would take? If Manchester is anything like Birmingham then I'm sure they'll do a detailed scan before they offer the cvs as you might end up in limbo like I did. I'm sure you'll have a clearer picture by the end of the week. So sorry you are going through all of this. I really can empathise. X

EnglishIrishRose · 07/11/2018 08:45

I also had this, 3.5mm exactly and although I tried not to worry, I did anyway! I opted for the blood test which came back very low risk for Edwards and Pataus, I declined Down's screening but that's my personal choice. I had/have no 'soft markers' of Down's on scans and at 32 weeks baby is absolutely perfect, happy and growing very well. I didn't sleep easy until I had my blood results back, fingers crossed for you.

momoa80 · 07/11/2018 09:30

Thankyou all so much...i will let you all know tomorrow once I get the call with the results :-) xx

Results back 1 in 5000 for Edwards and Patau...1 in 95 for downs.

OP posts:
Treaclepie19 · 08/11/2018 10:05

What did they say about the results?
That's very low risk compared to my 1 in 5 result and even then the NIPT showed baby is highly unlikely to have any of the main 3.

momoa80 · 08/11/2018 10:23

I'm going in for a chat tomorrow but I'm happy with that result. It's all about risk, risk of miscarriage having the cvs/amnio is the shame odds really so I'll just get a consultant scan at 16 weeks. My age group in 1:150 anyway and for me I know my score is less and still classed as a risk but I'm content with the result.

OP posts:
blueberry71 · 08/11/2018 10:37

That's a good result really. And I like I said with a detailed scan that'll even cut your likelihood of downs further, should you wish not to have the amnio. Wishing you a healthy and happy rest of your pregnancy Smile. X

bluesky45 · 08/11/2018 10:48

We had 3.2. The results came back 1:44 for downs. We opted for the harmony test and the results from that were low risk. I started a thread about it at the time that you might be able to search for, I think it was called nuchal thickness or something. It was in late September so still quite recent. I'm 18 weeks now and just waiting for my 20 week scan but everything seems OK so far. Fingers crossed for you.

BlessedMamma · 08/11/2018 20:00

At my first scan the NT Fluid was measuring at 6.8. I spent hours on google and seemed to find lots of stories mainly with sad outcomes. I'm now 38 weeks pregnant and the fluid didn't change, but I have had a CVS, additional scans and a heart scan and all have come back OK so far. There's a chance baby might have a rare genetic disorder when she's born, we'll just have to wait and see, but we've been told we can be cautiously optimistic.

momoa80 · 08/11/2018 20:14

Thanks ladies Smile mumsnet is a godsend at times like this.

@blessedmama...I bet it's been so stressful for you, having to constantly wait for results but great news that all seems well with baby Flowers
