Does a big bump = a big baby?

Hi
Coming up 32 weeks and I’m huge. I get comments from everyone about how big my bump is.
My cousin is 6 weeks ahead of me and I’m bigger then her. Yet I’ve measured bang on at the midwife appts for the number of weeks that I am.
My husband was only a 6lb baby and I was 7lb 4oz. My niece was only 4lb 9oz full term.
At my 20 weeks Scan, baby was measuring bang on what he should have been.
But I’m really worried I’m having a 10lb baby. I’m not prepared for this at all.
Did your huge bump end up with you having a huge baby?
I don’t think I’m carrying too much fluid. My last scan revealed the amount was normal.
Stories please!!!!
X

Just to give you the opposite side of the coin. My DS was born at 42+2. On the day I gave birth I measured 39 weeks, and had been on the smaller side my whole pregnancy. I was a size 6. Nobody could have described me as huge at any point in my pregnancy. I had a 10lb baby. Shock of my life - the week prior I'd seen the midwife and asked her to estimate his size. She had a good feel and said probably slightly smaller than average. Then out came an elephant. Friends in my NCT group who we're significantly bigger than me had 6-7lb babies. Don't focus on the bump size; so many things can affect its size: position of baby, position of placenta, elasticity of abdominal muscles, length of your torso, quantity of amniotic fluid etc. etc.
Best of luck for your birth.

spugzbunny · 31/10/2018 20:31

Nah I was like an elephant and baby was exactly on the 50th when born!

DiscoDown · 31/10/2018 20:31

I had a massive bump - I looked full term at 6 months. DS was under 7lb at 2 weeks overdue, my midwife said I looked so big because I'm short with a short torso - there's nowhere for the baby to go but out!

RoboJesus · 31/10/2018 20:32

I had a concerningly small bump but a massive baby. Went straight in to 3 month clothes. Just no fluid.

TheDayMyButtWentPsycho · 31/10/2018 20:34

I always have enormous bumps as well.

People always think I'm about to drop from
about 6 months pregnant. The comments are constant.
I've decided that it must be because I have a short torso and just have sticky-out bumps.

I have had big babies but that's because they go two weeks overdue so I don't think I make big babies per se.

SilverbytheSea · 31/10/2018 20:34

Nope, I had a tiny bump with DS and he was a 9 pounder, most of the ladies in my antenatal group had much larger bumps than me but had 6/7lb babies.

MyNameIsNotSteven · 31/10/2018 20:36

Nope. Mine were 7lb 4oz and 8lb 4oz. The first time I had a late scan and they told me I was having a ten-pounder 🙄

MagicalCreatures · 31/10/2018 20:39

@Methyl
Blimey. That must have been a real shock.
Thankyou for sharing.
I’m hoping lots of people are going to tell me that there isn’t a link to it at all.
I have to admit though. My belly is massive. It will be interesting though as my cousin who is smaller then me was actually a 9lb baby x

Your cousin herself was a 9lb baby?

I'm not sure our own weight has much bearing on what our babies will weigh.

MagicalCreatures · 31/10/2018 20:42

Oh wow
Lots of replies now. Thanks ladies.
So doesn’t seem there is any truth to it then.
I do have a very small waist. Typical pear shape. And my bump is all forward. Nothing at the side. Maybe that’s why.
It’s very interesting. X

I was frigging ginormous with a 7lb baby. People telling me "not long to go now!" eyeing up my 4 month bump!

MagicalCreatures · 31/10/2018 20:45

Yes my cousins were big babies. Sorry for the confusion.
From what people have told me, and from the experience of witnessing it between most of my friends, it has seemed that people that were big babies or families that generally have big babies, tend to carry on the trend.
But I’m sure there’s plenty of other stories out there that throw that theory out the window too 😁

I am petite, had a huge bump with DS1 - they kept measuring and doing extra scans and told me I'd have a 9-10lb baby. He was 6lb10oz and I was just carrying a lot of extra fluid - the MW assisting me was amazed when my waters broke how it just kept going!!

Rainshowers · 31/10/2018 20:49

I had two really big bumps (particularly with DD2), and had DD1 was 7lb 2 and DD2 was 7lb 1.

I’m only 5ft tall though so I think the babies have nowhere to go other than out. I was pregnant at the same time as a woman in my office who was almost 6ft, she was barely showing and her baby weighed more than mine.

OurMiracle1106 · 31/10/2018 20:50

My son was 6lb9 and i looked like I swallowed a giant beach ball! I was showing from 10 weeks(ish) to the point that on the day of my 12 week scan, my ex was asked if I was pregnant!! Blush

madmum5811 · 31/10/2018 20:51

Huge bump with middle child, they looked for a twin. But apparently when they broke my waters my OH said they could have floated a boat in the room.

gruber · 31/10/2018 21:50

I had the most enormous bump with DC1 and went to 42 weeks. He was born 7lb 2 on the 4th percentile! My SIL was smaller and neater than me, popped out DNephew 2 weeks early (38 wks) at 8lb 8. Absolutely no truth in any measuring!

dancingbee · 31/10/2018 22:56

So glad I've seen this thread!.. I'm 31 weeks and getting concerned with how many rude people keep commenting on how big my bump is and how I look full term. I'm 5"9 though so hardly short and can't argue that it's squashed up! I'm worried I'm carrying an elephant! Hoping there's really no truth in the bump size= baby being a whopper!

minipie · 31/10/2018 23:08

It’s a pear/hourglass thing. I’m that shape too, and short as well, and had huge bumps. Both babies under 6lb.

PurpleFlowersInMyHair · 31/10/2018 23:13

If it helps I had a 9.4lb baby and had a pretty easy delivery- as far as they go. I did not tear and had natural birth with gas and air in the pool. The midwives said afterwards that bigger babies tend to be easier to deliver. I’m sure there are lots of exceptions to this but the baby does have a head start getting down the birth canal when they’re bigger.

Another benefit is when they lose lot of birth weight in weeks 2/3, it’s mhch less of a problem because they are bigger to start with.

So my point is don’t fear having a bigger baby- it could be a blessing.

PurpleFlowersInMyHair · 31/10/2018 23:16

Oh yes- and I had a big bump so it was due to Big Baby

Iwantamarshmallow · 31/10/2018 23:30

I was huge with both my dc and they were 6.lb14 and 7lb11. DD was still wearing a 6-9 at 13 months old. A big bump doesn't nesseseraly mean a big baby

MonkeyToucher · 01/11/2018 07:13

I had a 50th centile bump and a 9lb 12 baby, just very low fluid. Bump size and baby size don’t necessarily correlate.

Just to reassure you as well, as pp’s have mentioned I also had a perfectly fine delivery with just gas and air. I needed forceps in the end but that was due to his position not his size! And it was absolutely fine, recovery was very painless and quick. Your body will not grow a baby that is too big for you to push out so even if yours is large, you will be fine!!!

outofmydepth31 · 01/11/2018 10:08

I measured 9 weeks ahead with my 4th and 5th babies Blush I was enormous.

They were both born around 7lbs each. Must have been mostly water!

I also measured 4 weeks behind with my 2nd and was really tiny and neat. He was born 3 weeks early at nearly 6lb. The size of the bump doesn't seem to mean anything for me!

OneMoreWish · 02/11/2018 21:46

I had a massive bump- people would tell me it looked like I had triplets inside.

All my family had lots of water come out when gave birth so I assumed was that.

Gave birth two days before due date to an 11 pound 10 ounce baby! Thank god it was a c section! Oh and apparently there was hardly any water lol

From this thread though it sounds like bump size doesn't predict baby weight.

Good luck xxx
