9 pound baby from growth scan

Gs1405 · 26/10/2018 14:17

I’m currently 40+2 weeks and have been told after a growth scan the baby is already weighing 9.2lb. The size has terrified me has anyone else had a baby naturally this size? Do the growth scans tend to be fairly accurate?

Don't put too much stock into a growth scan! At 35 weeks we were told my dd was 8lb! At 39 weeks she was born 6lb 🤨 and she'd been growing in that month too.
Don't worry it's mostly guess work. You'll be fine good luck!

Aspenn17 · 26/10/2018 14:42

No they are not accurate! I was told my baby would be ‘well over 9lb’, she was 8lb 2 (with very long legs!) I had her naturally with gas and air. My friend was induced as her son was estimated to be 10lb and he was 8lb 12lb. Both fairly big babies but not what the drs told us!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/10/2018 14:55

I gave birth to my 9lb 7oz son naturally. I didn't tear, we were both completely fine. Congratulations on your big beautiful baby Flowers

RuskBaby · 26/10/2018 14:58

They aren’t always accurate. DD estimated at 11lb was 7lb 13oz. Also, remember try to that not all of the extra weight is on their heads! It certainly helped me get through without too much worry.

CantWaitToRetire · 26/10/2018 15:00

They told me mine was a good 8lb or more but she came out 6lb 8oz.

fantasmasgoria1 · 26/10/2018 15:02

My ds was 9lb. I was induced due to pre eclampsia but actually giving birth to him was ok. As painful as any birth I guess! My friend had a 12lb dd and was less painful than her first at 8.4lb.

fantasmasgoria1 · 26/10/2018 15:03

Also my consultant a few days before birth told me he would be around 9lb and obviously he was correct!

MrsMarigold · 26/10/2018 15:04

My DH was 10lbs, his mother is very slight, and had no gas or air.

JassyRadlett · 26/10/2018 15:04

My first was 9lb 4 with a top of the chart head circumference. Born with gas and air only and quite minima tearing, stitches. Home the next day.

DS2 was 10 and a half pounds and arrived 45 minutes after we got into the birthing suite. A bit more tearing but that was because of speed not size!

NorthernRunner · 26/10/2018 15:05

The extra weight is good anyway as babies can loose weight after birth (totally normal) my 7lbs7 baby went down to 6lbs 3 and it did panic me but she put it make on within 10days!

Taylor22 · 26/10/2018 15:05

I've had one 9lb1 one 9lb7 baby. Both natural and both with only gas and air. It's fine. The size is nothing.

Big babies are awesome! So many fat rolls.

Onlyhappywhenitrains1 · 26/10/2018 15:07

I heard big babies are sometimes easier to birth as they are stronger and participate in the labour more. Plus gravity helps more with a bigger baby.

I also heard that your body won't let the baby grow bigger than your hips can pass.

Could all be old wives tales though.

neversleepagain · 26/10/2018 15:07

For me a growth scans were spot on. I was told my twins were 5lb7 and 5lb4 at 34+4. They were born the next day weight 5lb8 and 5lb4.

AlfieTheRailwayCat · 26/10/2018 15:09

Growth scans spot on for me too. I’ve had a 9.6 and 10.6 naturally. Don’t be frightened! Keep calm and discuss your options.

BettyOBarley · 26/10/2018 15:11

DD was 9lb 1.5 and honestly it was ok.
I just had gas & air and no tear.
A lot of people do say those growth scans are inaccurate so try not to worry too much.

BibiThree · 26/10/2018 15:11

You won't know until the baby's here. I was told at 38 weeks that I was having a large baby, 9lb at least. She was 6lb 13oz.
Try not to place too much emphasis on the scan, especially don't get worried about it. Big doesn't always mean difficult, just as small doesn't always mean easy. Dds head got stuck and I ended up with a section.

PlatypusPie · 26/10/2018 15:12

I had a 9 and a half pounder ( as predicted by midwife, not a scan) and didn’t tear though crowning was a bit wince worthy. 8lb sister was much worse. Gas and air for both. My tiny neighbour had three - 9 .4 , 10 and 10,8 - and decided to stop there as the pattern of increase was too unnerving !

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 26/10/2018 15:12

I had an 11lb baby naturally and it was much easier and quicker recovery than my 8lb 12 first baby. You'll be fine!

Gs1405 · 26/10/2018 15:13

Thank you for all your replies all very interesting and helpful! ☺️☺️

10 3 here, the birth was absolutely fine. I had no idea I was having a ‘big’ baby, it was only once she was weighed that I realised! I had a graze but no tearing.

Babbaganoush · 26/10/2018 15:58

Hi there

I'm a midwife and just wanted to reassure you that estimating fetal weight by scan tends to be quite inaccurate particularly as the gestation increases. There is no evidence to support intervening if a baby is believed to be bigger than average. Women tend to grow the right sized baby for them. So please don't worry or be frightened. Chances are if you hadn't been told the estimated weight, you'd be feeling just fine about the size of your bump.

I'm speaking here as a midwife and as a new mum of a 9lb 6oz baby who was born at 41 weeks at home with no pain relief. Believe in your body.

Good luck with your birth and congratulations in advance Smile

Stormwhale · 26/10/2018 15:59

They really are just an educated guess. I was told dd would be over 10lb. She was 7lb8oz!

Gs1405 · 26/10/2018 16:20

Babbaganoush That’s really reassuring and helpful to know thank you! 😄😄

My last baby was 9lb exactly born at 40+4. Birthing pool, just gas and air, delivered on the bed on all fours and no stitches at all. Big babies can come out slower which is better for the Mum!! I was gobsmacked to not need stitches. It was wonderful and an easier delivery than my first baby who was 8lb 4oz

MrsMartinRohde · 26/10/2018 16:30

DS2 was 9lb 9oz, born at 40+12. I had no idea he'd be that big, DS1 had been 8lb 1oz (I'd guessed DS2 maybe 8lb 8oz).

He was born really quickly, fast active labour, no time for pain relief. minor 1st degree tear, with no stitching needed (a relief after having 2nd degree with DS1).

What was odd was holding him for the first time - he was the size DS1 had been at a month old.
