When to start buying stuff?

When did you start to buy things to prepare for baby? There's so much to buy, I don't even know where to start, but I don't want to start until I know I'm safe so for now, I'm just saving.

When did you start to buy your things?

We bought the odd cute little thing we saw from about 3 months. The bulk of things probably about 6 or 7 months onwards.

Unicornandbows · 24/10/2018 11:38

How many weeks are you? I am currently 14 weeks and baby is due around April and I am thinking of making a list for January sales.

I have had a travel system as a hand me down as they are so expensive. I'm not thinking of buying any baby clothes as I suspect I will be given a load.. I am getting baby bathing set and nappies and all the little Tommy tippie stérilisation kits.

Like I said need to sit down and make a list

TokenGinger · 24/10/2018 11:42

January sales is exactly what I thought! I bet there will be some fab deals.

I'm only 6+5 at the moment so very, very early and wouldn't consider buying anything until at least 12 weeks, but I just wondered when is generally acceptable or safe to do so.

Travel systems are ridiculously expensive! So lucky you got a hand me down. I'd be happy to buy second hand but DP wants brand new 🙄

We bought a new travel system as I wanted a car seat as part of it and those are recommended to buy new, so don’t best yourself up about that.

We started buying bits from 17 weeks

Darkstar4855 · 24/10/2018 12:51

You can always buy a second hand travel system and just replace the car seat, often works out cheaper.

We started buying stuff from about 6 months but spread it out so it wasn’t too overwhelming e.g. one week we looked at cots, couple of weeks later looked at travel systems, few weeks later bought a few clothes, changing mat etc and so on.

I’m now almost eight months and we have everything ready so I can put my feet up when mat leave starts next week!

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 24/10/2018 12:59

With DD I bought a cute unisex romper when I was about 8 weeks, then nothing until after the 20 week scan, and even then I left the Big Things until 28/29 weeks.

bumblebee39 · 24/10/2018 13:05

I bought a few bits after 12 weeks (mostly plain white clothes and things and some little toys and bits to start my bonding more)
After 18 week scan I started buying the bigger items.
To be fair with both I was in mothercare "finishing off" shopping the week before I went into labour 😂 with first DC that's actually where my labour started whilst buying breast and maternity pads... I was marginally more organised with DC2 but his car seat still arrived the day before I was induced (had to be returned Twice) and the pram arrived the day I came home from hospital (a few days after DC2 was actually born) due to issues with delivery 😂

serialnamechangerme · 24/10/2018 13:09

I'm due in April. I've got a list of things I've researched and decided upon - car seats, breast pumps, baby carriers that kind of thing, what I call the 'main things' for us. I'm keeping a look out on second hand pages so I can get them when they come up.

First87 · 24/10/2018 13:11

I started buying from about 7 weeks! I can't control myself! I'm now 11+1 and have most of my big things. I bought my big things 2nd hand so I couldn't pass up a bargain when I saw it - they have all been packed away out of sight. The way I looked at it was that buying things wasn't going to change the outcome, and if anything were to happen, we would still use those things in the future :)

SoyDora · 24/10/2018 13:14

I’m 31 weeks and just thinking I ought to start! To be fair it’s not my first so I have a travel system and cot, but we got rid of everything else so still a fair bit to sort.

TokenGinger · 24/10/2018 13:16

DP picked up a Moses basket and stand in Aldi before we were even pregnant lol. It was on offer for £30 so made sense to.

I think we'll probably start in the new year. We'll be 16-17 weeks then so can make use of the sales. I'd love to get it all organised and ready in advance.

There's so much to buy!

I didn't want anything in the house until after my 20 week scan. MIL had bought a couple of things before then but just kept them at her house.

We bought our pram first, about the 24 week mark. Then started buying clothes and bits and pieces (Steriliser etc) from about 26 weeks.

MonkeyToucher · 24/10/2018 13:50

Ive always waited until after the 20 week scan - if it’s bad news at that scan I imagine going home to a house full of baby stuff would be quite grim...

madmum5811 · 24/10/2018 13:51

If it is your first, hang fire, grandparents, other rellies, friends may start going on a buying spree.

OutPinked · 24/10/2018 15:47

We had it all bought by 28 weeks. I started buying clothes and reusable nappies after the first scan then we bought all the bigger items in one big lump between 24-28 weeks.

Celebelly · 24/10/2018 16:19

We bought some bits and bobs after 12-week scan but none of the big stuff before 20-week scan (for no particular reason other than it took us that long to decide on it). I'm 24+4 now and we've got most big bits except the pram as I've been watching prices and managed to get good deals on cot and car seat. We've had gifts from friends & family since we announced at 12 weeks too.

Just make sure you don't impulse buy too much - take time to properly research and try stuff out, particularly travel systems. Some look great (and cost a bomb) but aren't actually practically very useful or economical v buying separate pieces.

thismeansnothing · 24/10/2018 16:24

I'm pg with my second Bute big age gap so it's like starting again. I bought a babygrow after the 12 week scan.....I'm 22 weeks now. Should probs pull my finger out. Got a 4D scan in 5 week, when we know what it is I might feel a bit more connected and get the stuff we need. DD has already presented me a list of stuff I need to get so that's a start 🤣

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 24/10/2018 16:37

When was pregnant the first time I brought a little vest when I had a positive test, then I had a miscarriage. So when I got pregnant the 2nd time, I waited until after 12 weeks and then brought small bits (outfits etc). Then the big stuff after 20 weeks.
I'm not saying the vest caused me to have a bad outcome and DS did wear the vest when the time came, but every time I looked at it, it reminded me that it was meant for our first but also how lucky we were to have him.
I'm 15 weeks with DC2 and haven't brought anything yet (though we don't need much). I am planning to buy a small teddy or outfit soon though, when I can find something I like.
Any big stuff, like getting their room ready won't be done till after the new year (I'll be around 26 weeks then).

Merrz · 24/10/2018 17:01

I'm 27 weeks and made my very 1st purchases yesterday. I've done lots of research and lists though so i know exactly what i need and don't, just a case of actually buying it now.
I know i've probably left it a lot longer than most people but i'm actually glad i have, i think it would be very easy to have picked up lots of things i didn't actually need or wouldn't use if i'd started shopping early on. Most of the things i looked at early on i've decided against after hearing peoples advice/reading reviews on-line so i'd say don't rush in or you might land up with a lot of things you won't use.

BlueBug45 · 24/10/2018 18:33

I waited until after 20 weeks.

Then spent about 4 weeks working out what travel system to buy.

One of my friends' gave us some advice that as you can't get one that does everything get one that does most of the important things you want but don't go mad buying the most expensive, then be prepared to use slings and buy one or more pushchairs at 6+ months. Then they gave us a couple of sling which they didn't use but I use.

I suggest you tell everyone possible you are pregnant and see what people will lend and give you. People will dig out moses baskets, cots, baths, clothes, etc. So you will just need to buy new mattresses. In regards to clothes don't buy any outfits for a child under 3 months unless you have an important occasion to go to. It is difficult enough getting a newborn in and out of vests and baby gros let alone little trousers.

madmum5811 · 24/10/2018 18:48

You can get some good stuff from Facebook market place. Bugaboo have a second hand FB page if you like those travel systems.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 24/10/2018 19:53

We started buying after the 20 week scan - but I did look at, decide and order the pram before that.
My mum and I had a look at prams together before the 20 week scan, and I was told it was likely to be a 6-8 week wait as I wanted a specific one. Also, we bought it in Denmark (different traditions regarding prams than in the UK) so had to time it with a holiday there.

I'm 29 weeks today, and all we need now are changing tables and nappies, as well as smaller items like bath and so on.
We have pram, car seat and Isofix base, Moses basket (from Aldi - it's very cute), cot for bedroom, clothes, muslins, bedding, duvets and so on.

I do want to get some stuff for the Moses basket as I think it needs a sheet and maybe a nicer mattress, and I'm not sure the sheets I've bought for the pram and cot are the right size.

Unicornandbows · 24/10/2018 20:08

When I think of all the things I need to buy a lot of them are not needed till the baby is a bit older such as cot.. I'm thinking of having those next to me cribs so I don't have to keep getting up really far.

Start with essentials and must haves to more luxury items I guess lol that will help you make sure that you have the right stuff at hand x good luck and soo going to be camping outside mother care on boxing day lol 😂

RiskIt4Biscuit · 24/10/2018 20:41

Oh, we haven't bought a cot - we bought a crib (one of the Chicco Next 2 me ones).

We haven't bought anything for later on yet - we're talking about moving abroad, so there's no need to buy anything that would just stand around and not be used, and then get annoying to pack if we decide to move.

coffeekittens · 24/10/2018 22:21

I bought everything new with DD after my gender scan at 16 weeks.

With this baby most things are second hand, I made a list of what I wanted to buy and what I’d be prepared to pay for it, I’m 23 weeks and am pretty much done as have found so many bargains locally, clothed I’ve bought in bundles from eBay and local selling sites, a few new things from Asda or primark. I buy nappies and bottles when ASDA do their baby event (pampers and MAM bottles).
