When did you start to buy things to prepare for baby? There's so much to buy, I don't even know where to start, but I don't want to start until I know I'm safe so for now, I'm just saving.

When did you start to buy your things?

We are going to start buying things bit by bit after the 12 week scan. Moses basket, pram, bottles big things really and when we have the 20 weeks scan we should just manage to hit the January sales so we will start buying clothes when we know the sex. I'm really excited to start shopping. Especially clothes haha

I'm 36 weeks with my second and apart from digging stuff from my first out of the loft plus a very half arsed attempt at a hospital bag am not very organised. Just realised that car seat recline shocking on current car so flapping around sorting that, washing stuff from the loft and trying to work out what I need. Don't think I bought much before about 30 weeks with my first as had nowhere sensible to store things and no time as house was more of a project than first thought...

I started buying after my dating scan at 12 weeks.
I'm 23 weeks now and got everything, but it's more down to early nesting than anything else. My life is organised to within an inch of its life at the moment.

Also, I bought a lovely travel system second hand.
No way would I buy new. As soon as they're old enough to be in strollers there's no point in bulky prams.

I started six months before I was due. I spent time over the summer buying the essentials required. That was it.

Be wary about buying stuff you may not need. Just my experience but I never used the following which some people said were essential:

baby sling - daughter not keen- preference to be in her pran which made life easier for me and saved me a sweaty back! I got a very expensive ergo baby

Muslins- never used them, my daughter was never sick and didn’t have poo accidents. We didn’t need it as a sunshade for buggy because the baby jogger mini city has a massive sunshade

Steriliser and bottles- daughter would not take a bottle, preference for breast

Breast pump - see above daughter would not take bottles

PurpleFlowersInMyHair · 24/10/2018 23:02

Hmm our travel system doesn’t have any of the issues listed above- we’ve used it from birth to 3.5 daily. We have baby jogger city mini gt. Don’t regret buying new- was the Best Buy for us

I wish I had a fiver for every Mum who said the moses basket was a waste of money.

Whenever you're comfortable to do so. I know your first child is precious and wonderful and you want only the best etc, but don't be afraid of scoping out places like Facebook marketplace for baby bundles. You can wash the clothes and they're in them for such a short time. You can spend hundreds in the shops for six weeks wear or just pick an entire bundle up for £10 - £20.

I'm 6 weeks with my second and my plan is to wait until after Christmas to buy most things but if I see a bargain before I will probably buy it.

I have certain things I know I want so am just looking out for sales and bargains..

BareBum · 25/10/2018 14:01

I started buying as soon as I’d had my 12 week scan. I wanted to spread the cost and there was so much to buy, that if I’d left it all to the end, it would have been exhausting.

SoyDora · 25/10/2018 14:04

With my first i thought there was loads to buy. By my second the list of things I needed had reduced considerably. Now I’m pregnant with my third I just keep thinking ‘as long as he’s got something to wear, somewhere to sleep and something to transport him in I’m sorted!’
