Best baby formula?

Hello, having my first baby very soon and i know i will be bottle feeding, has anyone any reccomendations for formula? My midwife has advised they are all strictly regulated and can only come from 2 suppliers so everythings basically the same? I have an aldi local so was thinking of mamia but i am shamed to admit i was nearly swayed by the aptimil packaging...

Any helps appreciated 😊

I don't thin it really matters tbh
My 2 dc have always had cow&gate, once they passed 6m and started weaning, if I couldn't get to supermarket and If the shop didn't have it I'd get whatever brand. So I've tried aptamil and sma too. Both DC seemed fine. Don't believe they knew the difference!
Same with nappies. With my first, my mother bought me nappies - pampers, superdrug, aldi, boots, lidl, tesco, asda sainsburys so I could try them sosee what worked best, most of the time I would get asdas own. Now I've moved, aldi without a doubt!

DS got on well with aptamil even having silent reflux but now it's £2 more than the rest I think. Cow&Gate made by same company but the ingredients are different. I would try aptamil again this time.

YerAuntFanny · 19/10/2018 19:19

I think they are all pretty similar but you might find that your baby has a preference so I wouldn't stock up just incase.

Buy whichever is readily available in your nearest/usual shop to make life easier and take it from there.

I formula fed my first and he was fine with Cow & Gate.

Chocolateismyvice · 19/10/2018 19:20

Sometimes it can depend on what your baby will take to. Friends DD struggled with C&G, and another one but took to Aptimal like a dream.

We used Hipp Organic (read lots of things saying people found their children settled better on it/gentler on their systems) and has no issues whatsoever.

I'm hoping to Bf more next time, but if not, we'll go with Hipp Organic again.

BlueBug45 · 19/10/2018 19:25

The advice is to get one they stock in your nearest shop so if you run out you don't have to panic.

Btw I'm mixed feeding.

WeShouldBeFriends · 19/10/2018 19:25

I think the only one that is any different tithe others is the NannyCare goats milk one, available in Sainsburys. More expensive but most similar to breast milk.

WeShouldBeFriends · 19/10/2018 19:25

*to the

dontcallmelen · 19/10/2018 19:25

I think they all a bit much of a muchness, apart from possibly the Hipp organic, as pp I wouldn’t stock up as some babies can have a preference, cow & gate is the one most start off with, yy getting different brands of nappies & trying them out sainsburys/ Aldi /Tesco all gave my dgd quite bad nappy rash, pampers & Lidl didn’t.

Pebblespony · 19/10/2018 19:27

One of the mainstream ones. Easier to get when you run out some evening or forget to pack when going to a relative's house. I thought they were all the same and sometimes switched between them.

BalloonDinosaur · 19/10/2018 19:32

DS was on formula from about 7 months. We went with whatever was cheapest when we were at the supermarket! Was usually Aptimil or Cow & Gate but I'm pretty sure they're all very similar.

julzx · 19/10/2018 19:42

thanks everyone for your advice 😊 i might just see what they give us in the hospital and go from there!.. the organised side of my brain wants to buy it in now incase of bad weather ect so i dont have to worty about it! i have a selection of nappies to see what ones i find the best all my friends swear by the aldi ones!

Check if your hospital provides formula as not all do.

ohdeardeardear · 19/10/2018 19:48

They're all pretty much the same.

bumblebee39 · 19/10/2018 19:51

C&G is amazing
Aptamil is good but disagreed with my LO's gut to start with
SMA has vanilla in it, made my baby bottles smell so bad I chucked them and it, could never get the smell out

DwangelaForever · 19/10/2018 19:57

I used aptamil with my PFB because it was the dearest Hmm it's currently £10 something.

With my son (4 weeks yesterday) I started with Cow and Gate (it's only £8) but he was having real issues bringing up his wind and being constipated. Have switched to HIPP organic (£8.50) as I've heard great things about it and he's been a dream on it so far!

deathisforever · 19/10/2018 19:59

I'd take formula with you, mine didn't provide it. Unfortunately BF'ing wasn't successful for us.

DD is on SMA and has been on both Comfort (when going through colic) and now back to the normal one and both have been great.

JosellaPlayton · 19/10/2018 20:00

I chose Hipp as liked the idea of it being organic and it’s actually one of the cheaper brands. Used it up until we moved abroad when DD was 9 months old without any issues.

Lauren83 · 19/10/2018 20:00

My son went onto Hipp organic after breastfeeding and then onto Aldi which he has always loved

Lauren83 · 19/10/2018 20:00

We always have some instant cow and gate in for emergencies too

welshweasel · 19/10/2018 20:01

We used cow and gate last time as it’s what the hospital gave us (planning to BF but had to do formula top ups). This time planning to use Aldi mamia, as it’s essentially the same as aptamil before they messed with it and it’s £7 rather than £13! They are all so similar that it really doesn’t matter.

Fatted · 19/10/2018 20:04

It's like everything, trial and error to see what suits baby. Aptimal didn't agree with my eldest, he has SMA. Youngest had SMA and then cow and gate with no issues.

CoodleMoodle · 19/10/2018 20:09

DD(4) was on Aptamil until she developed CMPA and was prescribed Nutramigen. She loved it so much she drank it until she was 18 months Blush Hopefully you won't need to go down that route.

DS started out on ready made Aptamil in the hospital, then we went onto the Aldi one. Then we found out that Sainsburys do one as well, so we switched to that as it's much more convenient for us to get to. I was reluctant but he was fine with it, still is (15 weeks now).

donquixotedelamancha · 19/10/2018 23:30

Chemist here, I did some research on this some years ago, so I think I can give a fair answer:

They are all the same, pick the cheapest (unless baby decides they don't like it).

Also, if organic is important to you- consider writing the word 'organic' on the milk tin and giving the extra money to charity. It has the same effect.

rosydreams · 19/10/2018 23:54

i found aptimal worked best for my daughter last time .She was already a sicky baby on breast milk and when i made the switch she didnt get worst. She seemed contented but i am also curious about nanny goat formula.

I wont be able to breast feed for long when baby born due to medication.Hoping nanny may settle better on the stomach
