Anyone have morning sickness and not throw up?

I’ve struggled with an anxiety disorder and emetophobia for years, and worrying about morning sickness was my main concern about getting pregnant.

Does anyone have any positive stories about having nausea from morning sickness, and not throwing up? I know people tend to say that the nausea was the worst part and throwing up gave them a bit of relief, but it wouldn’t work like that for me, I have panic attacks at the thought of throwing up.

There are so many threads on here about bad morning sickness, which makes sense as those people are likely to need support and suggestions for what might help, but it makes me so anxious that I need to hear the opposite!

Nope. I had Hypermesis Gravidarum so was sick all day every day and dehydrated twice in hospital as wasnt keeping even water down.

Onebiteofeverything · 17/10/2018 18:11

I had bad nausea but was never actually sick.

kenandbarbie · 17/10/2018 18:16

I felt sick all day every day for the first trimester, but was never actually sick.

Rehydrated stupid autocorrect

CoolGirlsNeverGetAngry · 17/10/2018 18:20

God yes. Felt awful for weeks but never actually threw up!

Hi OP. I too am emetophobic and I’m 18 weeks pregnant. When I first found out I wrote a very similar post to yours looking for reassurance.

I have felt sick many, many times but have never been sick. I’ve even dry heaved a lot (mainly due to acid reflux symptoms) but still wasn’t physically sick. I haven’t been sick for nearly 21 years now. For me, pregnancy has actually helped me with my phobia due to feeling sick so frequently. I’ve taught myself to not panic, and it hopefully means that little one is still growing nicely inside me. When I feel sick now I don’t panic as much because I know it’s very very unlikely that I’ll be sick (if I was going to be in pregnancy I probably would have been by now!).

I honestly think that if you aren’t a ‘sicky person’ - and emetophobes often aren’t, because if they were sick frequently then the fear wouldn’t exist - then you’re less likely to vomit in pregnancy. For example, I can feel very sick sometimes through travelling in the car, drinking alcohol etc but I never physically throw up. It’s like my body doesn’t let me. If you’re similar then I think it’s less likely that your body’s reaction to pregnancy would be to vomit.

I hope this helps, I’ve been a sufferer for many years now so feel free to message me if you need to chat! X

With my daughter I had morning sickness with my son I didn't but I felt sick constantly even through labour. Ginger biscuits help and lemonade does too x

Constant nausea for 16 weeks but no vomiting. I'm not really a sicky person though, even with a hangover I just feel it and it would take a lot for me to actually be sick.

loubeylou68smellsofreindeerpoo · 17/10/2018 20:14

Never sick with pregnancy unless I caught a stomach bug, just went off certain foods

Ithinkthatsenough · 17/10/2018 20:23

Me! Feel awful but no spewing! Food aversions and cant stand certain smells. Ive heaved once, woke me up as i thought i was having a dream!

mybumpismostlypudding · 17/10/2018 20:26

Yeah I had horrendous nausea, but didn't throw up.

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 17/10/2018 20:28

I felt sick for most of my pregnancy. Only threw up once when brushing my teeth and went a bit further back in my mouth than I should have done!

YouCannotPossiblyBeHungry · 17/10/2018 20:32

It's definitely possible. I'm an emetophobe and both my mum and sisters were sick all through their pregnancies. I felt sick but was never sick. Emetophobes are less likely to be sick I think generally.

BeautifulPossibilities · 17/10/2018 20:33

I had crippling nausea for a week with no vomiting, my husband thought I was being a drama llama as I was in bed so much.

Then I vomited every day all day, and all night.

He was so wrong.

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 17/10/2018 20:41

Yep. Both times. Constant feeling of nausea but never actually threw up. I basically sucked on crackers, chewed steam ginger or a mint. It held it at bay.

donajimena · 17/10/2018 20:43

I couldn't even brush my teeth without retching on both of my pregnancies. Never vomited on either but I was green for most of my pregnancies throughout

squadronleader87 · 17/10/2018 20:48

I had morning sickness for around 5wks but it was nausea and no throwing up. I would describe it as like being hungover. I had it early in the morning then at night when I was tired. Brushing my teeth really made me wretch but was never sick.

missbehaving1000 · 17/10/2018 21:19

Another one here who felt nauseous up until about week 15, but was never sick.

Only thing that made me feel better were ham, mustard and salad sandwiches on white bread. And I never ate those before getting pregnant!

mamaduckbone · 17/10/2018 21:21

Yep - had nausea with both of mine but never threw up. The only thing that made it go away was constant grazing on biscuits, bagels and hot cross buns...

socksortights · 17/10/2018 21:21

I felt incredibly sick through first 12 weeks, but not actually sick. I also had anti sickness pills during labour.

I am pregnant again and so far feel very sick, but not been sick.

I am emetophobic too.

DaenerysismyQueen · 17/10/2018 21:26

I've just had twins and had awful nausea between weeks 6-12. Never threw up though.

beingsunny · 17/10/2018 21:32

I'm also emetophobic, I had evening nausea up until 10 weeks.
Was never sick and it was probably a combination of tiredness and not enough water through the day.

Yourcupwillneverempty · 17/10/2018 22:00

I have 2 dc's, never vomited at all!
DC1- no nausea at all, an odd feeling of my Uterus being 'full' which I didn't like but didn't make me nauseous as such. I chewed a lot of gum which helped. My main issue was headaches, stopped as soon as I cut out caffeine (all from Diet Coke! 😳).
DC2- slight nausea which was mostly overridden by the desire to eat eat eat, snack, snack, snack! I only felt slightly sick if I wasn't eating very regularly, biscuits and crisps mostly. I did gain a lot of weight very early on but by 20 weeks or so the compulsion stopped and I didn't gain too much more. It evened itself out as baby was obviously getting bigger but I was losing weight because I was still very active and not binging as much.
I had 2 CS and was terrified the first time of being sick because of the drugs and being flat on my back, unable to move and vomming. Nightmare. My anaesthetist saw I was upset as I was having the epidural and put his arm around me and asked what was wrong. I told him my fear and he reassured me that he had vv strong anti sickness drugs right there waiting and that if I even felt a bit sick to tell him and they would hit my blood system straight away via the cannula. He said it was rare to be sick during, slightly more common after but that by that point they could sit the bed up and I'd have a bowl. It'd be unpleasant but short lived and unlikely. No sickness or nausea during or after either section. Just my experience but I hope it helps!
