So today I ran a half marathon at 13 weeks. I have been a long distance runner for years. I paced myself and was comfortable all through the race. The docs gave me the all clear too. I posted a photo online afterwards only to get a friend saying I should feel guilty for harming my baby while it's still so tiny wtf?! Feeling a bit upset now

I would unfriend her. She's ridiculous. And well done for running a half marathon at 13 weeks! Have you not had that terrible tiredness?

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 07/10/2018 18:13

Tell your friend to bugger off. As if you would wish to harm your child!

TinyMarie · 07/10/2018 18:14

I would be thoroughly pissed off with your 'friend' to be honest! Your body, your choice. You've taken all of the proper precautions by consulting with a professional and if she hasn't got anything supportive to say then why say anything? Good on you, I needed to sleep for 20 hours a day at 13 weeks!

Monipop84 · 07/10/2018 18:16

@Hollowtalk I had bad fatigue in the first trimester but always felt better after a little jog or moving! It sort of brought me back to life. The hard part was bringing myself to do it but once I was there it was OK!

Well, massive congratulations. Your friend is an idiot.

Darkstar4855 · 07/10/2018 18:19

Your friend is an idiot.

Onlyfamandclosefknow · 07/10/2018 18:19

The advice is not to increase exercise right? But you didn't, you just maintained and with doctor's approval? That seems reasonable to me.

Monipop84 · 07/10/2018 18:20

kalinkafoxtrot45 yes exactly! I also built it up gradually so that if there was any issue I could tackle it way early. No reason to be so sanctimonious! She's also pregnant, I wonder how she'd react if someone said that to her!

My dsis was running up to half marathon distances up to 28 weeks. Your friend is a moron. As long as you are sensible and have consulted your gp then there is no reason not to continue

TinyMarie · 07/10/2018 18:22

You shouldn't feel you have to justify it. You know your own limits and it's not up to someone else to tell you otherwise. Congratulations!

Monipop84 · 07/10/2018 18:23

@Onlyfamandcloswfnow yes last year I was in all kinds of crazy plyometric stuff so really jogging is v comfortable and cutting down on intensity if anything! I wouldn't run a half marathon every week but this is my fourth and I made sure not too get out of breath or push too hard (which I would normally do)

YANBU. Good on you for continuing your running whilst you can.

Onlyfamandclosefknow · 07/10/2018 18:29

Then bloody well done!

Onlyfamandclosefknow · 07/10/2018 18:30

I can't find a medal emoji but it's here in spirit!

SuperstarDJ · 07/10/2018 18:31

Respond with ‘I haven’t harmed my baby and you should feel guilty for telling me that I have’ & then unfriend on FB. No one needs that type of judgemental crap in their lives.

Monipop84 · 07/10/2018 18:33

Thank you ladies for making me feel better Smile I would have really being understanding if this came from older folk, but nowadays the concept women must not lift a finger through their pregnancies is so outdated!

starrrgazer · 07/10/2018 19:09

Well done! You know yourself best and you had medical clearance! Wonder how comprehensive your friend's medical training is Wink. I'd totally ignore it if it were me - pregnancy is not an illness and if you feel well enough to run, more power to you!

Thismummyruns · 07/10/2018 19:13

Well done you! I'm slightly jealous (in the nicest possible way). Do you mind me asking what your time was in comparison to a half pre-pregnancy?

I am 8 weeks and haven't run for 4 weeks- nausea/vomiting daily have resulted in me not even being able to climb stairs. I really wanted to run during this pregnancy but I fear that has now slipped away 😩

Your friend sounds very judgemental and a little jealous of your achievement maybe?

Monipop84 · 08/10/2018 05:21

@Thismummyruns I cut down the exercise when feeling very sick or nauseous (week 5-8), then did 4 long runs to prepare for the Half and the occasional half an hour jog mid week. My time two years ago was 2:05 and this time 2:16. However, I started this pregnancy a lot fitter than 2 years ago - had I not been pregnant, my goal would have been to go sub 2 hours.

@Thismummyruns just to say, you will almost certainly start feeling better after week 12 Smile Funny how I had almost got used to retching every morning and then all the symptoms disappeared suddenly!

Wow, that is so impressive!

The only reason anyone would pass a comment like that is to make the recipient of the comment feel bad.

I mean, you've done the run, so if there was any damage, it's too late now.

So what's the point in commenting at all?

I would be seriously re-evaluating the friendship.

MaitlandGirl · 08/10/2018 06:00

I’m envious of anyone who can run a half marathon, so to be doing that while pregnant is fantastic.

I have to admit my first thought was “won’t the baby get seasick being bounced around in the amniotic fluid?” - it’s been a very long day lol

PBobs · 08/10/2018 06:51

Your friend is a muppet. When I used to do kickboxing our trainer's wife trained with us up to 37 weeks. She was doing adapted push ups and all sorts. No contact mind you. Seriously - I thought she was the bomb. Keep running since you've always done it. The only risk is taking up new stuff. That's the only reason why I won't start running marathons right now. Too risky. Grin

CatchIt · 08/10/2018 07:03

Well your 'friend ' is an idiot. I'm pretty sure the reason most women get so fat during pregnancy is that they don't do any exercise.

I rode during my first pregnancy, I didn't jump (I don't anyway) and I would just take nice leisurely hacks out. I stopped at 7 1/2 months as I couldn't get in or off any more!

I didn't ride in my second pregnancy as it was too uncomfortable 😣 and I definitely put more weight on.

Dr's recommend you carry on doing the exercise you have always done, just asses the risks and adjust it for how you feel.

Well done on your marathon, I am crap at running! 😂

ShamelesslyPlacemarking · 08/10/2018 07:07

“I didn’t realise you were a doctor, Janice. I’ll be sure to run your professional opinion past my regular maternity doc, who was completely happy for me to do the run.”
