So today I ran a half marathon at 13 weeks. I have been a long distance runner for years. I paced myself and was comfortable all through the race. The docs gave me the all clear too. I posted a photo online afterwards only to get a friend saying I should feel guilty for harming my baby while it's still so tiny wtf?! Feeling a bit upset now

@Catchit wow kudos for riding.... you must be good! My riding teacher used to ride when pregnant as well. I am not confident enough on a horse for anything like that.... Already on a normal hack I start getting flustered if the horse goes from canter to gallop ConfusedGrin

Wow! Well done! I'm totally in awe. I've been a regular runner and exerciser for years and I couldn't have run a half marathon at 13 weeks, I felt horrific.

For what it's worth my doc also cleared me for distance running and once I was through the first trimester misery I ran up until around 24 weeks. I could still be running now tbh (34 weeks) but I had some trouble with an old knee injury aggravated by the pregnancy and didn't want to do any long term damage. I really miss it though!

Your friend should be proud of you, she sounds like an idiot. Ignore her. There's so many people with judgemental nonsense and stupid opinions around pregnancy and they should all butt out! Your body, your choice. Being fit and healthy is far better for carrying a child than being overweight and sedentary, which way too many people are when pregnant.

You total legend! All the best for the rest of the pregnancy.Smile

CatchIt · 08/10/2018 09:48

@Monipop84 I'm very flattered but I was lucky that I had a good horse who didn't want to gallop about! We had a hairy moment with some cyclists quietly sneaking up behind us which spooked us both and we had an unexpected 5 strides of canter down the road but it wasn't his fault.

With my 2nd pregnancy, I had a different horse who sadly had problems with his knees and was liable to trip so aside from being uncomfortable riding, it was too risky. He was pts before ds was born. 😥 I still miss him, he was only 5. 💔

@Monipop84

Hats off to you!! Fab time. Have you got any other races booked?

MsHopey · 11/10/2018 18:04

🏅🏅🏅
Well done. As others have said, if your a regular runner there really isn't much risk and you've had the go ahead by the GP.
Some people just enjoy putting others down.

I did a triathlon a 5 weeks before I gave birth,(my timewas shit!) but then I was back running 5 weeks after a C Section. You know your own body, don’t let her put you off running throughout your pregnancy, I used a support belt after about 26 weeks. This was back in the early 90’s and I was unusual then I must admit, but nowadays it is imperative you excersise throughout.

GreenMeerkat · 11/10/2018 18:14

What an idiot!

Yes I'd unfriend her.

And well done you! Couldn't have even stomached a light jog at 13 weeks. Amazing!

SpottingTheZebras · 11/10/2018 18:16

Well done and that would be an amazing time for me even when not pregnant.

stepmummamumma · 11/10/2018 18:18

Congratulations OP!! I am so so impressed, do not feel guilty in the slightest!! 😁

penisbeakers · 11/10/2018 18:49

Tell her to fuck off.

FoxgloveStar · 11/10/2018 19:06

Well at least you know now she is an idiot. Not worth having in your life. If she is judging you for that (totally normal thing to do and perfectly safe) then imagine what it’ll be like once your babies are here.

Today I got judged for

  • cycling to work
  • drinking a pint of pineapple and soda water (kinda looked like a beer)
  • drinking Diet Coke

People need to get their noses out!

DannyWallace · 11/10/2018 19:12

No no no no!
She's just wrong!
My fitness disappeared in the first trimester as I felt so rough! I think you're an absolute legend for doing that run!!
Unless you have info from the doctor saying you must stay on bed rest you've done nothing wrong! There's just some people who apparently believe that you have to sit on your arse knitting while eating for two.

Breen86 · 11/10/2018 19:44

Wow. I feel proud for managing a long walk! Well done you. Your friend is being very insensitive and ignorant. I would tell her as much xx

TryingToStayRational · 11/10/2018 22:53

Ignore her. She clearly has no idea what she's on about. And wow, good for you running a half marathon at all, especially when pregnant. I get similar nonsense from people about cycling (I'm 33 weeks now) and I just ignore them, or if I can be arsed I tell them that my midwife and consultant think it is great, as the biggest risk to my health is probably getting a blood clot, which is less likely if I'm active. Obviously I'm really fortunate that I still feel fine on my bike at the moment, but if that changes I'll stop and just do whatever I can safely and comfortably do - it's common sense really.

If she's pregnant herself she will soon find out what receiving unsolicited (and often blimming ridiculous) opinions is like and perhaps realise how horrible it is to pass judgement anyway!
