Nuchal test result: advice needed? X

Monipop84 · 06/10/2018 15:15

I have just received my nuchal test results and the risk for chromosomal abnormalities is 1:2332. I am 34, do you think this is average? Nuchal measurements were 1.2 so quite low. I know my result is classified as low risk but I keep reading of people who got a 1:100,000 result and this worries me! HmmConfusedSad

That's a really low result. Try not to worry. You'd be called in if there were concerns.

Newmrs22 · 06/10/2018 15:23

Sounds fine. Think mine were higher than that and still classed as low risk. They’d tell you if they were worried.

Observatorycrest · 06/10/2018 15:25

This is a low risk. If you were standing in a crowd of over 2000 woman only one of you would have a DC with a chromosoamal abnormality. It’s all odds to be honest and the only way to be truly sure is to have the harmony test or CVS or amino..... I was a 1 : 4 risk with my last DC and we did the CVS as I was clearly very high risk and he was perfect!

Jessesgirl13 · 06/10/2018 15:54

That is classed as low risk but I completely understand your concern as I felt the same when my results came through!

I’m 33 and mine came back as 1:3000, which even though classed as low risk didn’t ease my concerns as a friend who is 4 weeks ahead (and older than me) came back as 1:10000! Sounds silly but hers just made mine seem not good!

As I didn’t want to be stressed about it, we opted to pay for a private NIPT test (about £300-400). Its not cheap but much more reliable - around 99.9% i think - and non invasive (just a blood test and scan).

As an added bonus we also found out the gender from the dna! Smile

I wouldn’t worry though, as above posters have said, you’d be called in if they were concerned.

Laac · 06/10/2018 15:56

I think anything above 1:150 is classified as low risk.

Monipop84 · 06/10/2018 18:11

Thank you ladies! I feel better now :) xx

I am 38+3 I haven't had this done??

Celebelly · 06/10/2018 18:29

Are you in Northern Ireland?

laurenluke2017 · 06/10/2018 18:30

I have had all 12, 20 and 36 scans and all been lovely. Nothing was found on abnormality scan when had that at 20 weeks and 12 weeks. So do I have nothing to worry about?? X

laurenluke2017 · 06/10/2018 18:30

I'm in England. X

MrsStrowman · 06/10/2018 18:49

You will have been sent a letter after your 12 week scan, unless you declined to know if your child's showed signs of downs, patau's (or a third I can't remember off the top of my head).
They measure the fluid at the back of the neck it has to be done early on usually around 12 weeks

laurenluke2017 · 06/10/2018 18:55

I think I declined the test for down syndrome or something as it does carry a risk of miscarriage. So hence why I declined. However reading my scan back it does say, no abnormalities have been found on my scan after checking everywhere, head, skull, body, feet hands face etc.

Celebelly · 06/10/2018 18:57

The nuchal test is non-invasive and no risk of miscarriage. You are talking about an amniocentesis or CVS which is only offered if the nuchal test result is high risk. I hope they explained the process to you properly so you had the proper info to decide!

laurenluke2017 · 06/10/2018 20:02

Well anyway, I was told that but all my stuff came back fine thanks

kmreeve · 07/10/2018 04:05

@laurenluke2017 it's just a blood test so no risk of miscarriage and the NT is done during the 12 week scan, it's just the sonogram lady doing an extra measurement at back of neck.

OP - my blood work came back as 1:165.. I went on to have a harmony test ( NIPT BLOODTEST) and all was clear.. I think your results are fab but understand your worry- it's all a worry till they are in your arms xx

Monipop84 · 07/10/2018 06:24

@kmreeve that's it, I think it is an irrational worry but hey, welcome to parenthood! Wink I considered Harmony but it is so very expensive and not sure I can justify it with so many more expenses this year (including lots of house repairs....)

OP posts:
SputnikBear · 07/10/2018 06:55

I justified paying for Harmony because it gave me peace of mind. I didn’t want to spend my pregnancy being stressed and worried, or affect my baby with all those stress hormones. Still glad I had it, it was such a relief.

NewNameDueToMyIdiocy · 07/10/2018 07:45

My risk was 1:100,000 with my first.

This time my risk was 1:(~)5000 - it did make me think "shit that's a lot higher risk than last time" but actually it's still low, low, low risk.

So I understand your concerns OP, but your results are still great!

I think sometimes using a ratio to display the results can cause more worries than say, giving a percentage chance that your baby will be uneffected.

NewNameDueToMyIdiocy · 07/10/2018 07:47

For example OP, based on your ratio the chance of you having a healthy baby is 99.9996%.

Monipop84 · 08/10/2018 06:35

@NewNametoMyIdiocy wow 1:100,000!!! How can you go so low?! I mean I get the differences up until 10,000 but 100,000 seems huge! I wonder what the parameters are, apart from nuchal and age? Smile

OP posts:
NewNameDueToMyIdiocy · 08/10/2018 09:55

@Monipop84 I honestly don't know how low it can go. 1:100,000 is the lowest I have ever heard of? Presumably my age played a part as I'm two years older now, but still under 35! Oddly this time the nuchal measurement was actually smaller than my first pregnancy, so presumably my age combined with blood results is what made the number so much smaller! 100,000 to 5000 seems like such a leap. Although last time I got a single result for all three trisomies and this time I got two, one for Down's Syndrome separately, which was 1:5000 odd and then a combined result for Edward and Patau which was still 1:100,000. I don't know why the difference this time in how the result was presented, or if that affects the size of the number.

Sorry, very little point to this reply, but I find this sort of thing fascinating!!

Daisy2990 · 08/10/2018 10:26

Mine was about 1:2500 for the first at 1:168 for the second, this is probably mostly down to my age and the fact we had to have bloods only as baby wouldn't cooperate for nuchal measurement.

Anything less than 1:150 is high risk. 1:168 is a risk of 0.6%.

I was all for the Harmony and my trust offers it at a discount, however I think 0.6% is a result I can live with.

Your risk is, I think, 0.04%. I would not worry about that risk personally.

Misscocopops · 08/10/2018 11:59

I’m 27. First baby was 1.1600, second 1 in 250ish. Both fine. I’ve just been given a 1:4 for my third baby and I’m around 14 weeks.
Your fears and your fears and no one has the right to tell you how you should feel, if your worried your worried, but I just thought sharing mine might give a little perspective, respectfully.
Having such high results we’ve opted for cvs screening, this carries a risk of miscarriage of 2%. We figured 2% is lower then 25%.
We looked into the harmony results but in our area it was an extra 2 week wait (we got our results a week ago, and cvs results will be next Monday).
If your really concerned have the harmony testing done. Cvs is not worth the risk with your results IMO x

NewNameDueToMyIdiocy · 09/10/2018 07:32

Sorry, I should correct myself, I forgot to multiply by 100! Your chances of having a healthy baby 99.96% (0.04% chance of not) which is still brilliant odds. I hope you are feeling better about it OP.

KingIrving · 09/10/2018 07:36

For DS2 my risk was 1:49
And I was your age.
I had an amino just to be safe. He was and is fine
