BMI at booking in appointment - worried :-(

Hi all

I'm currently 5w pregnant with DC2. My DS is 18 months and since then struggled to lose the final few pounds of my baby weight. Current BMI is around 26 which I think is overweight.

I'm trying to be very sensible before my booking in appointment but worried the BMI measurement will stay at 26.

Does anyone know if this have any implications for my pregnancy? I'm worried this will make me consultant led or the midwives might lecture me ☹️

At a bmi of 26 I doubt they’ll even mention your weight to you.

Markygirl1995 · 05/10/2018 16:59

Hun my BMI was 33 at booking.. I'm due in less than 2 weeks I'm sure you'll be fine

MsMotherOfDragons · 05/10/2018 16:59

It shouldn't have any implications at all as long as your BMI is under 30 (at least, that would be the case in the two trusts where I've had babies).

Howhot · 05/10/2018 17:01

They won't care about a BMI of 26 OP, honestly. You only get referrals of a BMI of 30/35+. Mine is far higher than yours and I was referred and it meant a 10 minute appointment of going over risks however they didn't want to see me again unless it went over 40.

randomsabreuse · 05/10/2018 17:03

29.5 at booking in both times. No worries. Don't worry about 26!

dinosaurkisses · 05/10/2018 17:06

Same situation here- Mine is 27 and I mentioned my weight to the midwife at booking and she looked at me like I had three heads.

She then signed me off for fully midwife led care and declared I was well able for it given my clear medical history, and not to worry.

I know I have 12 pounds to lose after this baby gets here, but I’m not precious about it and I’ll take any help I’m offered!

Celebelly · 05/10/2018 17:34

Mine was 30 and no one has mentioned it. I was the only one who brought it up at my booking in and the midwife just shrugged and said 'you've got no other risk factors'. Now 22 weeks and it hasn't been mentioned again.

Thanks all - really appreciate the responses and feel a lot more relieved now.

Had a bad experience once with a GP in my early 20s who made a catty remark about my BMI being 25. It makes me anxious now whenever I have medical appointments.

My weight has been fairly consistent since I was 15 - I truly think I'm just naturally around that 25/26 mark!

My BMI was 26 at my booking in, midwife said it was fine. They weighed me when baby was due, so I was obviously much heavier, and recorded it as 30. They then made me inject clexane for a week after the birth due to my BMI being 30. Still not convinced that was right Confused But just something to be aware of

Verbena87 · 05/10/2018 17:53

Even if you do end up consultant led (I was for low BMI thanks to morning sickness, and was told my baby was at risk of a low birthweight. He was 10lb9oz on arrival so I’m pretty sceptical about the correlation between maternal BMI and birthweight these days!), it shouldn’t limit things. The consultant I saw put in my notes that I was to have midwife-led care in the MLU during labour, not to be automatically consultant led in labour, and until 30 weeks or so (when it became apparent my underweight baby might actually be rather huge) we were still discussing homebirth, with the consultant supportive of our wishes and just providing relevant research for us to read so we could make an informed decision.

orangejuicer · 05/10/2018 18:16

BMI of 40 here. 25 should not be an issue!!

orangejuicer · 05/10/2018 18:16

*26

problembottom · 05/10/2018 18:30

My BMI was 26 when I was first weighed by the midwife but I only know that as it's in my notes. It has never been mentioned to me and I'm 28 weeks now, with a straightforward pregnancy so far.

Darkstar4855 · 05/10/2018 18:53

BMI of 26 is fine, shouldn’t have any impact on your pregnancy. Congratulations!

CobaltRose96 · 05/10/2018 18:54

26 is only JUST going into overweight (25 or over is overweight, over 30 is obese). I wouldn't worry, I doubt they'll even mention it.

StarfishSandwich · 05/10/2018 19:10

If I wa shout midwife I’d be THRILLED that your BMI was 26.

I’m fairly sure that over half of my clients have a BMI over 30 at booking.

StarfishSandwich · 05/10/2018 19:11

Sorry ‘was your’ not ‘wa shout’ 😂

schopenhauer · 05/10/2018 19:16

I wouldn’t worry op that’s nothing!

keepingbees it’s your body you didn’t have to do what they told you! I know it’s not always presented like that but it does annoy me when women are told they must do certain things with no consultation!

BetsyBoo100 · 05/10/2018 19:32

Wow thanks everyone - I'm really touched by all your replies and feel so relieved.

Might treat myself to a little chocolate tonight!

@schopenhauer I know, I wish I'd had more presence of mind at the time to question it. Having just given birth and being exhausted, they told me I had to so I just went along with it.

SpoonBlender · 06/10/2018 01:11

I'd murder for a BMI of 26. Trouble is, what I'd murder is probably a curry... Oh well!

You're definitely worrying about nothing Betsy! It'll be fine :)

overagain · 06/10/2018 08:25

Mine was 27.7 at booking. Morning sickness means it's 26 something. Nothing was said at booking in or at my scan when they weigh you again if your having the trisomy test.

PurpleFlower1983 · 06/10/2018 08:45

My BMI was 33 and I’m still low risk so you will be fine!

rotavixsucks · 06/10/2018 08:59

Mine was 30.5 at booking, the only thing they said was that I've got to have glucose tolerance testing as I'm at high risk of GDD as it is other 30.

Funnily enough I wouldn't consider myself obese-a bit fat at short and a size 10/12 but still carrying baby weight from DD1 who was born 9 months earlier.

MsHopey · 06/10/2018 09:02

Hate myself for this, but my BMI was 47 😰 I hate thinking about it. I hate talking about it.
I literally have HIGH BMI in capital letters written on everything baby related, letters and in my notes.
I hate it.
I really don't think anyone is going to be too bothered about 1 BMI point over the "healthy" range.
And I'm pretty sure they won't even mention it to you.
