Bedside cribs

Gosh, these seem super expensive.

I wanted a snuzpod but with the matress, waterproof cover and bedding it adds up to loads. Plus I'm expecting a big baby so who knows how long he'll fit in it?

What are you all doing for the first 6 months?

I used the sleep next to me by Chico and It was fantastic - not sure how much it was as it was a gift. My youngest was huge (11lb 9oz) and stayed in it for 6 months

StarfishSandwich · 03/10/2018 02:48

We bought a normal cot and customised it to fit flush against our bed with a side off, thinking this would last much longer than a regular cosleeper. In reality, it acts as a large bedrail for DS who very much cosleeps in the bed. I’m hoping that as he gets bigger he’ll be more receptive to being inched out into the cot!

villainousbroodmare · 03/10/2018 03:10

Cot with the side off.

FairfaxAikman · 03/10/2018 03:26

I've been loaned a Next to Me and it's totally worth it for keeping me sane. I bf and can get DS fed and back down quickly.
Ds is a big baby -8lb 12oz at birth - but is still in his at five months/18lb

preggersteach · 03/10/2018 03:59

We bought a tutti bambini which we love and doubles as a travel cot but not one with the bed bit really low like most, this is great for us as we are away a lot. To make it ever so slightly cheaper don't buy the mattress protector and sheets from the same company as the bed bit them from Amazon or Mothercare as they sell bedside crib sized bedding which is a lot cheaper than the branded stuff

SnuggyBuggy · 03/10/2018 04:07

I have found a bedside crib very useful. It's nice not having to get out of bed.

MonkeyToucher · 03/10/2018 07:56

I wasn’t that impressed with the snuzpod to be honest - Ds was a big baby (9lb 12) and only lasted about 3 months in it. I got a second hand bedside cot from eBay that was more like a small regular cot with wooden slats but one of the sides slid down. It was fab!

Britta1 · 03/10/2018 08:01

I’ve just bought the tutti bambini bedside crib, not using it yet though as not due until Nov. I 2nd pp though by saying don’t buy the branded bedding etc to make it cheaper. Mothercares own crib sheets fit the mattress fine and only cost me £7 for 2 sheets unlike the £25 for the branded ones!!!

moonlight1705 · 03/10/2018 08:07

We've just bought a Chicco Next to Me for £45 off ebay and will head to Mothercare or similar for sheets / new mattress.

Not due until January so unsure how long it will last but hopefully at least 6 months.

Liland · 03/10/2018 08:11

I've had a Kindercraft Neste delivered as one of the cheaper bedside crib options. Baby isn't due until January, but it's all set up, and I'm pleased with how sturdy it is :) It seems pretty big too, granted I know nothing about how big babies are! I've bought generic fitted and waterproof sheets from various sales over the last few months to go with it.

I got it here for £90: www.preciouslittleone.com/product-information/53/61214/kinderkraft-neste-bedside-crib-dark-grey/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw0dHdBRDEARIsAHjZYYA6jJ8u2XKToM8CoB1-ksBRuFbh-6uDDZoXMP-9JdZbVcAUzJxn8VMaAnE_EALw_wcB

My eldest was in the next2me for at least 7 months, it's a good size. Now 3 day old DS is in there and I'm remembering why I love it so much! It's great, one of the best baby purchases we made.

lifechangesforever · 03/10/2018 08:19

Tutti Bambini - it's really large and will do past 6 months if you need it to (well, it will in DD's case anyway). It's bigger than the Snuzpod and better looking/sturdier than the next2me.

I did only have it attached for about 4 weeks though as not breastfeeding so I now have the sides up and just enough room for me to get in and out of bed at the side.

Don't buy their sheets though - £25 I got stung for!

Bear2014 · 03/10/2018 08:28

I loved the Snuzpud, especially since I had a c section. I bought it second hand from a local FB page and sold it on for nearly what I paid (in a bundle with the fitted sheets) so my only real outlay was the cost of the mattess. DS was huge though (11lb) so after 3 months had to move to his big cot.

welshweasel · 03/10/2018 08:29

Buy one second hand, there’s always loads of next to me’s on Facebook marketplace. New mattress for £20. I loved having a bedside crib - meant I never had to get out of bed in the night!!

redexpat · 03/10/2018 08:30

I used a chicco.

CountessVonBoobs · 03/10/2018 08:33

I had a Babybay which my first slept in precisely never. He was very clear that his place was snuggled up against me in bed. I sold it for a fraction of what I paid when he was 3 months old.

I didn't bother with DC2 and just took him straight to bed. But a lot of people use an Ikea Gulliver with one side off bungee-corded to the bed as a budget cosleeper.

SnuggyBuggy · 03/10/2018 08:47

Also some of the bedside cots can flat pack and be used as a travel cot

Verbena87 · 03/10/2018 08:53

Normal cot cable-tied to our bed here too, from birth (he was over 10lbs so glad we didn’t invest in something small!!). It’s the Ikea GULLIVER one which is stable with a side removed, and there are a few blog posts and tutorials online for converting to a co-sleeper.

It’s worked really well for us (he’s still in it at 13 months because we’re in a Mexican stand-off situation where he won’t give up night feeds and I won’t give up remaining-horizontal-all-night. Also I like waking up to his squidgy face.)

peachesarenom · 03/10/2018 08:55

Thank you all, lots to think about! I'm a really bad decision maker. I spent two hours in a shop yesterday choosing a nappy bag!

I think before baby arrives it’s all such an unknown that you get into a proper dither. One of the unexpected benefits of motherhood is I’m much quicker and more efficient at making decisions and getting stuff done, so in my experience it does improve!

peachesarenom · 03/10/2018 09:32

I hope so Verbena87!

There's a Babylo Cozi sleeper on Amazon more reasonably priced great reviews and slightly bigger than snuzpod.

1Wanda1 · 03/10/2018 10:49

You can get all of the bedside cribs (Snuzpod, Chicco Next To Me, etc) second hand on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, etc, for less than half the RRP. There are loads of them available all the time. Just buy second hand and get a new mattress: done.

JurassicAdventure · 03/10/2018 12:06

Our big 5 month old is in 6-12 clothes but still fits in her cot that's the same size as a next to me (we found the sheets £££ but got some off eBay much cheaper)

BertieBotts · 03/10/2018 12:09

You can convert an ikea cot. I did with my first DC. This time I've bought a "Waldin" one from amazon. It's okay, seems much better value in terms of size/cost, but the mattress is ridiculously shit and you can't put nice sheets on it.
