Just putting together my hospital bag (after a bit of a false alarm at the weekend) and I realise I have no idea what to wear for labour! Have got a light nighty with vest top type sleeves I was thinking of (don't want anything too hot as due in July and the ward is boiling!!).
What are you all wearing? (I know its very trivial but I think the PG hormones are making me think its the most important decision in the world!).

I wore a really old nightie. The midwife had to remind me to remove my underwear though, forgot that bit, . Watch what it says though, my DH thought it was hilarious that i was being induced with bedtime frolics written on my nightie - Madonna, Like a virgin playing on the radio probably didn't help.

RGPargy · 12/06/2007 11:57

I have no idea!!!

OhNo40 · 12/06/2007 11:57

I didn't wear anything (birthing pool and cossie wasn't appropriate!)
I did have a mothercare maternity nightie on hand for afterwards.

ejt1764 · 12/06/2007 12:00

big, soft, old t-shirt for birthing bit - and socks (I get very cold feet!)

lissie · 12/06/2007 12:00

lol an old button down cotton nightie. one that i didnt mind getting v dirty. dont pack pjs for after tho. nighties are so much comfier

compo · 12/06/2007 12:01

bought a massive t-shirt from matalan but didn't use it in the end as gave birth 10 minutes after arriving at hospital in ambulance in my dressing gown

dal21 · 12/06/2007 12:27

I asked my midwife the same question yesterday and her advice was the following.

  • It is a good idea to have something that unbuttons as when they try to do skin to skin contact with mother/ baby - it makes it much easier.
  • Have something that protects your modesty early on - as many women in labour will take walks outside/ in corridors.
  • stick to nighties post birth as they are kinder to the sore areas - applies to both c section and vaginal birth

She reckons a lot of women end up stripping off anyways, so who knows!

First time - my normal pg clothes for the first 12 hours then a huge old tshirt belonging to DH

Second - normal pg clothes for the whole thing. Ditched the top when baby arrived for skin to skin

First time: nekked as I had an epidural and they stripped me down.

Second time: a big purple aladdin nightshirt from Disneyland in Paris that my SIL bought me. I still wear it to this day and every time I put it on I get flashbacks of when DD was born (in a nice way!).

This time: not sure but hopefully my purple satin nightie that is nice and cool and flowie...

Hope you find whatevers best for you!

First time I wore an oversized T shirt, and with DS2 I wore a hospital gown because I forgot to pack anything appropriate to give birth in!

babyblue2 · 12/06/2007 22:22

large t shirt, both times

Chopster · 12/06/2007 22:22

first time naked, second time huge tshirt nightie thing. Also had to be reminded to take knickers off.
I was told to pack socks, apparently cold feet are common in labour. Didn't use them though.

tassis · 12/06/2007 22:22

same v soft and loose maternity nightie both times

wore dressing gown a bit the second time (bizarely I felt chilly!)

at some point (v near the end) the nightie came off...but (snap kamikaz) I don't really remember this happening!

(and wore my TENS machine for most of it too!)

Maternity nighty type thing both times

alicet · 13/06/2007 14:34

I bought a cheap white nighty from primark to wear in labour but actually never got out of the clothes I wore to hospital (even in my emergency section!) apart from obviously my pants and trousers...

I was told to gets nighties for afterwards as well as much more comfortable than pj's and was vrey glad for this advice - I'd got some nicer ones for then!

Bodkin · 13/06/2007 16:18

One of DPs old t-shirts (and another vote for socks - looks odd, feels great) once things really got going, then I had a lovely new flannelette stripey gents nightgown with buttons down the front for after - fab for skin to skin and BFing and just really soft and comfy. Mind you, it was January last time round. This time I'm due in July, so not sure if a lighter cotton one might be a better bet...

I wore a nightie the first time and a jumper the 2nd time as I never had time to change.

rozzyraspberry · 13/06/2007 18:00

Cheap xl nightshirts from matalan both times which went straight into the bin afterwards!

Hopeitwontbebig · 15/06/2007 11:28

1st time, hospital gown
2nd time, stuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuupid me, brought in pajamas, because I thought I'd wear a hospital gown again, but wasn't offered one, so ended up with just top half of pyjamas.....

This time I'm going to buy a cheap nighty with buttons at the front.

Nanoon · 15/06/2007 21:01

socks and a bra

FrannyandZooey · 15/06/2007 21:04

I was so cold I wore tights and trousers and a dress and a jumper and a cardi

I was on my own in the house and unbeknownst to me the heating had broken, and I couldn't stop shivering

when my waters broke I couldn't be arsed to take the whole lot off so I was nice and soggy too

when I eventually transferred to hosp it was so hot I took everything off and just had a gown on

kyala · 15/06/2007 21:19

First time I wore my dungarees right up until they broke my water's so I didn't have to worry too much about it LOL and it was a home birth too (despite JDaddy's anxiety about it all) so didn't have to worry about hospital bag either!
Still, not sure what I'm doing this time so what will I wear?!! LOL You got me thinking about it now and I've got ages to go LOL
