Just putting together my hospital bag (after a bit of a false alarm at the weekend) and I realise I have no idea what to wear for labour! Have got a light nighty with vest top type sleeves I was thinking of (don't want anything too hot as due in July and the ward is boiling!!).
What are you all wearing? (I know its very trivial but I think the PG hormones are making me think its the most important decision in the world!).

Cheap Matalan nightie with buttons down the front.

Brought flannelette pj's to wear afterwards, but WAY too hot - cotton nighties all the way!!

1st time long t-shirt
2nd time long t-shirt, but ended up nude in birthing pool not that I cared at the time!

Never what I'd planned to wear. The thought 'I'm in active labour now best change into that old nightshirt I brought along' just didn't happen. Too busy concerntrating on the buttons on my TENS machine.

Nothing, I started out wearing a nice plain shift thing but after a few hours, it really didn't matter. Do recollect a nurse saying in a shocked way "shouldn't you put something on, the doctor will be here soon." I wanted to hit her. Needless to say, I took no notice at all. Don't think I was capable of taking notice actually.

No. 1 - Nightie provided by hospital
No. 2 - ditto
No. 3 - nothing as I was in a pool
This time - a nightie my mum bought me that I don't like (in case it gets wrecked! ). Planning to whip it off and swap for a button front one for skin-to-skin contact after the birth.

first time an old nighty

second time - nada! and then a hospital gown for an hour or so before getting myself sorted.

this time... plan on HB so probably nada again!

I bought a primark nightie which buttoned right down the front becasue I thought I'd want to feel a bit covered up but in the end I pulled on a wrap dress over my underwear to go to hospital and took the dress and my knickers off when I got there -
so to answer the question, just my bra.

Its funny isn't it, i remember worrying about this in my first labour, we arrived at hospital fully dressed, and the mw was in and out the room - never commenting on what i was wearing or whether i should undress. When she was out of the room i kept whispering to dp should i get undressed?

Then suddenly a few powerful contractions later i was instinctively ordering him to rip my clothes off no shame then.

Second time round i had a homebirth and as soon as i woke in labour i stuck a nightie and paper knickers on. DD2 came very quickly and the mw didn't realise i was pushing until i screamed "Get my knickers off!!!!!!!!!"

hi PPS!!

Good luck first of all!

I think the short sleeved nightie is a good idea to start with. I was in my normal clothes for an hour and a half, decided I ought to change when they said I was in established labour so went upstairs (started another ctx of course, stairs = bad idea in labour!) and put on an old cotton thing I never wore for DS1 but intended to...I think it's victorian, came from boot fair, looked like it must have seen lots of women through whatever (but clean, just old I mean!)

Anyway a few minutes later I got in the bath and so that didn't last. After about 2 more ctx I got out and went into transition, so was beyond any effort at clothing and TBH it felt much better having nothing in the way, they could access whatever they needed to and things were very fast & furious by then.

They couldn't see the baby's head anyway as I was kneeling on my heels by the bed, so a nightie would have made it even harder for them!
you really don't care by the end, two newish friends were present and I was lying around afterwards totally starkers, they didn't seem to mind, they've both got bodies, both given birth..I do feel a little uncomfy with the idea in retrospect but am naturally shy

Deffo not pyjamas though. You'll need too much help to get them on and off!!! And how can anyone reach their socks???
