TMI Can feel baby's head in vagina?

I put a finger up there to see if I could feel my cervix but I couldn't. However near the top of my vagina, the back wall is rock solid like bone. Is this just my baby's head? Or should I be worried?

How pregnant are you?

BikeRunSki · 24/09/2018 23:01

Are you very, very far along?

ttbren · 24/09/2018 23:02

Sorry I should have said, I'm 34+5

It does rather sound like the baby’s head is engaged. Is it your first?

TulipsInBloom1 · 24/09/2018 23:06

Is it not just completely closed cervix?

ttbren · 24/09/2018 23:09

Yes this is my first, I can't feel my cervix at all so it must be pretty high up. It's definitely not my cervix that I'm feeling, the back wall of my vagina at the top is very very hard, it hasn't been like this until now

Yes it will be baby's head. Nothing to worry about. I felt it too in my pregnancies once I was 32+. Was a bit Shock but not as Shock as when the head actually crowned! Grin

BikeRunSki · 24/09/2018 23:13

I think first babies can engage quite early and sometimes move up and down. I’m no expert though.

LittleHares · 24/09/2018 23:13

You shouldn't really be self examining, big infection risk. Consult a midwife if you're concerned.

ambostraw · 24/09/2018 23:17

Erm, head being engaged doesnt mean head in vagina. I would call a midwife and be checked over ASAP.

inmyshoos · 25/09/2018 11:39

The head isn't in the vagina, it's behind the posterior vaginal wall. Don't panic, it's normal.
Self examining is also fine. The vagina is not sterile!

OlderThanAverageforMN · 25/09/2018 11:45

Yep - Quite normal. I posted on another thread with lots of TMI, that I had to "hold" DD2 head near the end of my pregnancy when I went for a pooh Blush. As PP said, no infection risk, that is only an issue after waters have broken, otherwise you wouldn't be able to have sex either Wink

SomebodysNotInBedYet · 25/09/2018 11:50

I'm 39+2 and can feel the same. Very odd, it's so hard!

GorgonLondon · 25/09/2018 12:12

Yep. Mine both engaged around 33 weeks I think. Had 4 weeks of feeling like I couldn't cross my legs!

ems137 · 25/09/2018 12:24

My babies heads didn't engage until labour and I could feel their heads in the later weeks of pregnancy too.

If there's a risk of infection for body parts entering the vagina then surely the midwives would say no sex for 9 months?

LittleHares · 25/09/2018 17:39

I would imagine your fingers go much higher than a penis if you can "feel" babies head!
At 34 weeks I wouldn't be messing around

inmyshoos · 25/09/2018 18:13

Depends on the size of the penis littlehare Grin I'd say with your own fingers, a penis is likely to go further, unless you are super flexible with long fingers and have a partner with a very short penis!

As a qualified midwife I can assure you that as olderthan says, risk of infection is only an issue once your waters break. The vagina is not sterile.

LightDrizzle · 25/09/2018 18:16

I’m impressed you can reach at 34+
I don’t think it’s anything to worry about but don’t be embarrassed to ask your midwife!

chloechloe · 25/09/2018 19:19

I’m 30w with no. 3 and can feel baby’s head too about a full finger in.
With DD2 she was so low down at 34w or so that I could only get the tip of my finger in before bumping into her head.

ttbren · 26/09/2018 14:37

I've now been told today by my Midwife that baby's head isn't in my pelvis yet. What could this hard thing that I'm feeling be?

tessiegirl · 26/09/2018 17:57

Didn't you ask the midwife what it could be? Confused

Liz3891 · 26/09/2018 19:43

I don't understand the anatomy here.

If the cervix is closed, how is anyone feeling their baby's head?

SoyDora · 26/09/2018 19:47

If the cervix is closed then of course you can’t feel the baby’s head.

chloechloe · 26/09/2018 20:43

You can feel the head through the vaginal wall, regardless of whether the cervix is closed or dilated.

wombats · 26/09/2018 20:51

When did you last open your bowels? I reckon it's stool.
