I lose respect for any woman who makes no good attempt to stop smoking during pregnancy , an acquaintance has smoked all throughout her pregnancy and it drives me mad , she has made no attempt to stop as it will stress her out . Should be made illegal

@Eatmycheese I did not know that? I didnt get a breath test at my midwife appointment? Maybe I'll get one further down the line, I'll have to make sure I steer clear of car exhaust fumes on my way into the next appointment or my midwife will think i'm fibbing, lol

Meganc559 · 26/09/2018 13:29

I totally get what your saying hun but I m a pro lifer.
Because the baby doesn't have a say I feel that they need to be protected in someway.
At the end of the day a baby is still a human no matter how far a long they are as a fetus I believe they are a viable life and the mothers life and the babies life should be treated as equal.
I know alot of people will disagree with me but that's just my opinion and everyone is entitled to what they believe :) xx

Meganc559 · 26/09/2018 13:31

Sorry I forgot tag you hun @Momma22

Eatmycheese · 26/09/2018 13:41

Yes I had to breathe into a carbon monoxide measuring device.

Momma22 · 26/09/2018 13:44

@Meganc559 it totally makes sense that you would have the opinion as a prolifer. I admire you for having the courage to believe what you believe when it is such an unpopular belief these days. I wish we lived in a perfect world where nobody would have abortions or smoke in pregnancy, but we don't, life is never black and white, I wouldnt smoke whilst pregnant, or have an abortion personally, but I truly believe in the saying 'never judge somebody until you have walked a mile in their shoes' and I find it very difficult to judge people who may be in different circumstances than I am in myself. I believe you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar, and a kind and understanding approach is far more helpful than being judgemental.

Also abortion is illegal in Northern Ireland, does it stop women from having them? No. They travel to England. If smoking were illegal in pregnancy those who wanted to smoke would find a way around it. Drugs are illegal, do people still use them? Yes they do. The point I'm making is that making smoking illegal in pregnancy would not solve the problem all together. More support to help women quit is what's needed and what would actually help! Not a change in the legal status

Glad that awful comment was removed.
Utterly pointless

babystripes · 26/09/2018 21:52

Op your approach towards this situation is awful! Barking on there like your better than others because you gave up! Not every pregnant woman's situation is the same! I don't smoke I used to but once I started ttc I quit and just because it was easy for myself doesn't mean I think everyone else will find it as easy! I think you coming on to this and shaming a pregnant woman looks worse for you that it does for her smoking to begin with! This site is for support and encouragement not to tear people down! And just remember no one really knows what personal situations people may be dealing with! You shouldn't be so quick to pass judgment!

Don't know how anyone can disagree with Op why would anyone risk the chances of the babies having asthma just so they can have a puff for 5 mins 10/20 times a day, I seriously hope any women smoking during pregnancy seriously considers the consequences. My nephews mum smoked 15-20 a day whilst pregnant and last week my 1 year old nephew was rushed to hospital in a foreign country because he was struggling to breath and now he's been diagnosed with asthma, he could of died if she didn't wake up. Is it seriously worth it, keep the dirty habit to yourselves poor unborn babies should not need to suther it's beyond selfish. How anyone can try and make it ok or be shocked when people don't like it is beyond me

albert92 · 28/09/2018 13:34

@babystripes she doesn't think she's better than anyone. Any mother who smoked during pregnancy should be seriously ashamed of themselves and people shouldn't be scared to point out that it's wrong. Surely the mother should know it's wrong and not try to depend her actions. It's actually life threatens read my above post

albert92 · 28/09/2018 13:40

And there's a huge difference with trying to give up and cutting down and knowing your wrong doing and then there's people who carry on as normal not caring or not thinking it's an issue. It is a huge issue and people need to understand that it is wrong and has a MASSIVE effect of your baby and child's health sometimes for the rest of their life. How can any mother feel good about that

happymummy12345 · 28/09/2018 13:44

My mum smoked and drank through all 3 of her pregnancies. Guess what we were all fine.
I drank during my pregnancy, a lot less than usual but still did. Guess what my baby was fine as well.
Surely you have better things to post about? And even if it was illegal, do you honestly believe that would stop people?
Take your stuck up opinion and get lost.

albert92 · 28/09/2018 13:52

@happymummy12345 well done your baby is fine but you didn't know that when you were putting drink in your mouth and just because you were fine doesn't mean that all babies are my nephew could of died last week it's not just oh so and so was fine so it's ok, it's bloody not

albert92 · 28/09/2018 13:55

@happymummy12345 I'm glad you being drunk was worth risking your babies health. Drink alcohol can cause many problems for babies in the long run your baby might be fine now but later problems in life can come from alcohol during pregnancy and I can clearly see you have no remorse what so ever. I'm glad your baby is fine I clearly care more than you do

FredMerc · 28/09/2018 14:52

@albert92 I'm sorry but I have to say you are not going to make your Nephew's Mother feel better by blaming her, she can't turn the clock back. As a note I DO NOT think smoking whilst pregnant is a good idea or fair on the baby, however, I admit I smoke with my older 3 kids born 1997-2001, I am VERY ashamed to admit, but thankfully they have grown up with no health related issues, period. I had stopped by the time I was TTC number 4 born in 2013 and he has food allergies and asthma and lots of coughs and colds etc so smoking didn't cause this for him. Please try to be kind to her as she tries to deal with her Sons asthma.

albert92 · 28/09/2018 15:29

@FredMerc she can't turn the clock back now know so unfortunately my nephew is suffering because of smoking during pregnancy why am I not allowed to say it causes long term health problems! It's a fact I havnt said anything to her but I was disgusting watching her smoking all day long with my nephew in her belly and now he is suffering ! She is the only one the blame and I hope she does feel bad I would

albert92 · 28/09/2018 15:31

@FredMerc he's constantly ill and always has a chesty cough but the fact and now he can hardly breathed and could of died I'm raising awareness to people who don't have a care in the world like her I don't mean to be horrible but it's common sense you wouldn't give a newborn baby a cigarette so why pass it through to them when there in your belly !

albert92 · 28/09/2018 15:35

@FredMerc I used to smoke myself and stopped the day I found out I was pregnant it was very hard but all I had to think about was my child and that was enough I have a lot of respect for people who try there hardest to give up or cut down drastically It shows people care but it's the people who don't give a shit carry on smoking 20 a day and have the excuse of well my mum smoked when she was pregnant and I'm fine, it's a very uneducated selfish attitude to have

albert92 · 28/09/2018 15:43

Mothers Who Smoke While Pregnant Increase Their Baby's Risk Of Asthma. New research has discovered that mothers who smoke during pregnancy may cause wheeze and asthma in their children when they reach preschool.
This is on a official nhs website so anyone who tells me there kids are fine are seriously lucky !

Meganc559 · 28/09/2018 16:31

@Albert92 I m so happy your saying these things, everyone seems to think that there justified to smoke because there life is more viable than there unborn child x
