Pram Help Please

Hi,

I'm finding pram shopping such a minefield! There are just too many options and they all seem wrong! Please help!

The front door to my building is up about 6 steps which I need to be able to carry the pram up.

Our flat is up another flight, I can leave the frame downstairs so I was thinking to get one with a detachable carry cot?

We live in London, no need for rough terrain... most important is agility and lightness.

I really don't want to spend a thousand pounds... there must be something good on the market for us...

Thank you for any advice!

I would specifically search for something lightweight, possibly one handed fold for ease and if you want a carry cot then go for that though they do cost extra. Off the top of my head a Quinny could be a good option and there are usually lower budget versions that are similar.

Babyzen yo-yo are really small and light. Highly recommended by friends. They have them on display in John Lewis if you wanted to take a look.

Baby jogger City Mini GT. lightweight, folds with one hand, in one action. Detachable carrycot available. Buggy is about £350 and the carrycot about £150. We have ordered one. They are very popular with people who have them.

Creasey31 · 16/09/2018 08:47

Go into an independent stockist and ask for advise as they know what they are talking about and you really need to pick them up. Also you are going to have to carry the baby up the stairs then come back for the carrycot etc unless you get a car seat that fits onto chassis for shorter outings. There is so many out there for every budget.

le42 · 16/09/2018 13:53

Thanks everyone! I'll take a look at the makes you suggested! Some of them we tried in the shop were just enormous!

@Magpie24 > we looked at the babyzen in JL and it looks great, but you can't take the carrycot out and I wouldn't be able to detach it with one hand so I think it's still heavy to carry up three flights (with baby in). I think we need one where the carrycot can be carried up separately.

I get the not wanting to spend a lot but sometimes the cheaper ones don't come with the basics you then find you need. My friend got a giggle go and loved it but found the cover the basket the muff the waterproof jacket etc were all separate. As were the fixings for car seats and the car seats that were compatible were very limited. Whereas I felt like you did until we went to a baby show and we found the best deal for us was a silver cross pioneer. Comes with everything you could want, plus is a sleep safe cot with isofix and maxi cosi and we got a bebylux car seat with foot muff for free. All in £1060. Seemed to be the best all in at the show in my opinion and it does feel like amazing quality / scratch resistant etc. And light and easy to use where the icandys and similar felt huge :/ sorry just my experience so hope between all these you find something for you! But it shows it's your own personal choice that'll work best for you x

I’d look at the Baby jogger range, they are lightweight, fold small and the newer ones have a carry handle or a shoulder strap.

LivLemler · 16/09/2018 14:23

You could also consider the uppababy Cruz. It might be more than you're looking to spend once you add in the carrycot but it ticks your other boxes.

le42 · 16/09/2018 14:54

Thanks @Peachy, we don't mind about spending a bit but ideally looking for something under £700. I'll have a look at the ones you suggested, all the silver cross ones I tried in JL were too heavy for me to lift but maybe I didn't try that one you mentioned

10 steps to my front door. I had a Mamas and Papas Armadillo flip. Detachable carry cot and the base (later base plus seat) folds and carries with one hand

MrsBosh · 16/09/2018 14:59

I have a Silver Cross Wayfarer and I sometimes struggle getting it up kerbs! Not lightweight at all!

dinosaurkisses · 16/09/2018 15:00

Are you hoping to leave the frame downstairs in a communal area permanently, and just bring the carrycot up and down from the flat?

Your neighbours might not be thrilled at having to share their hallway/ fire exits with a pram if that’s the case.

oneofthose · 16/09/2018 15:09

I have a babyzen yo-yo and love it! It folds small and is light enough to carry up the stairs easily, has a carry strap. Also very easy to push one handed.

lrwe · 16/09/2018 15:17

When I was living in London in a first floor flat in Clapham I LOVED my bugaboo bee. Small enough for buses. Detachable carrycot. Could put the car seat on. Proper little city pram. I could carry the whole frame with baby on up to the first floor no problem.

YerAuntFanny · 16/09/2018 15:27

Baby jogger city tour lux.

Reversible seat, compact, easy to fold and lightweight.

Roughly £600 including pushchair, footmuff, carrycot and raincover.

I have the Cosatto Wow travel system, my baby is 12 weeks old and until she was 7 weeks old we lived in a flat up 3 flights of stairs with no lift and we couldn't leave the pram at the bottom. It has a carrycot with one-handed release and the car seat fits interchangably on the chassis. It's quite small and light for a pram, I pushed a few around in Toys R Us and this was definitely the lightest. I think the car seat is quite heavy but didn't try any others so can't compare that. Until we moved house I could carry baby in the carrycot up and down the stairs but not in the carseat without stopping as that was heavier. However now baby is 12 weeks I struggle to carry her in her carrycot even through my hallway and down the three stairs out the front door of my new house, and she's not a very big baby - only around 25th centile in weight since birth. I'd really recommend looking at babywearing wherever possible. DH and I both love our Baby Bjorn and it's much more convenient especially when you're in a flat. I would really recommend the Cosatto Wow but you do have to be realistic about how long you're going to be able to carry a baby in a carrycot up many flights of stairs before they're too heavy. Having said that, I was quite frail from pregnancy and birth as I had HG and lost weight and couldn't exercise and then had a difficult birth where I struggled to walk properly for the first few weeks or so, so maybe other ladies would be fitter and able to carry the weight for longer?

The only downside to our pram is that it's quite small which is good because that makes it light and easy to maneouver around busy places, but DD is very tall - like 80th centile - and she will definitely have outgrown her carrycot within the next month for sure, and she's only 12 weeks, when it's meant to last until 6 months.

le42 · 16/09/2018 16:13

@dinosaurkisses > it's a huge hallway and i don't think anyone will mind at all, all the neighbours are really nice. And my partner can carry it up when he gets back from work too if it was a problem

@oneofthose - for the babyzen do you have to take the baby out? You can't lift out the carrycot right?

Melaniesunflower · 16/09/2018 16:43

We've just order a Roma Moda for £350 (plus £20 for the adaptor for the car seat). It looks just as good as the expensive brands, but was by far the lightest we saw....... We ordered it from an independent dealer, but have a look at it on the internet

TruffleShuffles · 16/09/2018 17:10

It’s not a carrycot as such on the babyzen it’s more of a fabric insert. You would take out the baby and then collapse the pram with carrycot still in place. That can then be carried on you shoulder up the stairs along with baby. The pram can be collapsed one handed.

stellavisionandunderstanding · 16/09/2018 18:04

Baby yo-yo! A dream up and down the stairs of The Underground; gives you such freedom!!

stellavisionandunderstanding · 16/09/2018 18:05

No you can't lift the carrycot off but you could get the clips for the car seat and then take that off. You'll be able to carry the whole pram upstairs as it's so light; even with baby in it.

DappledThings · 16/09/2018 18:23

My friend did that with her Zen and it snapped in half. She managed to catch the baby. I wouldn't recommend it.

Peachy92 · 16/09/2018 18:25

Yep I thought the same about most silver cross ones, loved them online but when I tried them the Wayferer and the Wave were huge and bulky. But we got the pioneer timeless and I can lift it one handed empty and everything detachable is light weight yet sturdy. But again I'm me you're you what's light for me might not be for you! Couldn't recommend a baby show more. Ignoring the gimmicks etc the actual travel system choice is great and you can wander about and play with them. And they're discounted much better! Worth a try before you buy :) x

Millypad · 16/09/2018 18:28

We’ve just got the Flip x2 from mamas and papas specifically because it’s light and you can fold it with one hand!
