"older" mum to be

Milligan123 · 10/09/2018 07:46

Hi I'm new to mumsnet and was just wondering if there are any other "older" mums out there? I'm pregnant with my first at age 38 and have suddenly developed a strange anxiety that I'm going to be the oldest mum in the playground!! I know its ridiculous but has anyone else felt the same way? (p.s I'm 13 weeks)

Hi

I'm in the same boat! 39 and 11 weeks pregnant with my first. My younger sister has 33 has just had her second baby so I'll be the oldest new mum in the family!
They way I figure it is what will be will be. Can't change my age! Just looking forward to having a little one
X

I’ll be 36 when my second is born. When I had my son, I was one of the youngest in my local baby group, out of 12 of us, 3 were over 40. I wouldn’t worry at all! Lady I work with has just had a baby at 45 so late 30s isn’t that old really!

Racecardriver · 10/09/2018 11:46

I think I may be the only mum at school under thirty. A lot of them are late thirties at least. A couple who are definitely over forty. In the end I don't think it means as much as how nice a person you are.

mommybear1 · 10/09/2018 11:56

Hi I got pregnant at 38,delivered at 39 and now trying for our second at 40. I was worried about my age but so far I've been the youngest mom in most baby groups! Good luck OP

niclw · 10/09/2018 12:32

I'm 38 and my baby is due tomorrow. I wouldn't worry about age at all nowadays as it's seen as being normal. A few months back I went to a quiz at my friends daughters school to make up numbers for the reception class mums. On the team of 8 the youngest mum was about 20 and the oldest mid forties with a range inbetween. Good luck with your pregnancy and enjoy your baby when he/she arrives.

Had my first at 34, 12 weeks preg with my second. I'll be 39 when this one is born 😊

Bluebird4 · 10/09/2018 14:15

thisismadness77 · 10/09/2018 14:16

Hi! 41 and due my second in February. :)

mommybear1 · 10/09/2018 15:20

Hi @Bluebird4 👋🏻 congratulations

Tillyfloss1 · 10/09/2018 15:21

I'll be 37 when I have my first at the end of October. I've just finished the NCT classes for my area and of say 10 mums to be 7 of us were 35 or over x

Grimbles · 10/09/2018 16:15

I'm 41 and due in Feb with no 2

Dartsplayer · 10/09/2018 16:18

I was 36 with my first and 38 with my girls and there are older mums than me in the playground

LBNM19 · 10/09/2018 16:21

I'm 28 and pregnant with baby number 4. Had my first at 21 but I would never look at another Mum that way. I definitely don't think you will be the oldest. X

I am in my 3rd trimester and compared to you guys I am positively geriatric! ( seriously I am well into my 40’s) however I honestly believe age is a state of mind. I have extra appointments because of my age and have had to point out to the doctors that it is why I am there ( I think they sometimes wonder!) I don’t let the age thing bother me and I think that comes through in my attitude. Enjoy your pregnancies whatever age you are, and here’s to not judging a book by its cover! Smile

TheVanguardSix · 10/09/2018 20:50

I had DC3 at 42. I never gave or give my age a second thought. Don’t even give such thoughts legs, OP. I’m wouldn’t sweat it! 38 is the new 28. Grin
TBH, I don’t really notice the ages of other mums either.

Congratulations! Enjoy your pregnancy!

InfiniteCurve · 10/09/2018 20:54

I was 40 when DS was born, though he is my second.I'm a bit older than his friends' parents, but not much and it was never an issue.
The person who stuck out at his primary school was the Mum who had had her first at 19, though I'm sure it varies with area.
Congratulations,and enjoy! Smile

BlueBug45 · 10/09/2018 21:24

I'm 43 and currently holding my 7 day old.

TheFormidableMrsC · 10/09/2018 21:33

Had DS (2nd baby) at 42. He's now 7 and nobody bats an eyelid, nor have they ever (except my now 20 year old DD who was disgusted by the whole thing Grin). There are, however, grandparents at the school gates significantly younger than me! You're still young, don't give it a second though Flowers

anxiousmumtobe2018 · 10/09/2018 22:05

37, midwife told me I'm young compared to some of the other mums around, in their 40's

NotTakenUsername · 10/09/2018 22:06

There’s a wide range of ages at the school gate. It’s only a number.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 10/09/2018 22:11

Oh love, 38 for a first timer is really common (guessing you’re not in London, eh?)

Congratulations Star

BlueKittens · 10/09/2018 23:57

We had a lovely NCT group ranging in age from 18 to mid 40s. We all got on well and age didn’t really come into it. You will meet mums (and dads) of all ages, shapes, sizes, backgrounds. Parenting is a great leveller and these things don’t matter. I’ve made friends even though I didn’t plan to and don’t need any more friends, but it is a lovely thing about parenting - the range of people you meet.
