Where does a newborn sleep during the day?

I'm 22+5 FTM and making my lists of everything I need for when baby arrives. Looking for advice on what I need for daytime sleeps for newborn.

Planning on getting the Snuzpod bedside crib - and the top of this lifts off so we could use the bassinet downstairs during the day. But seeing it in a shop the top is quite heavy so I may not be up for lugging it up and down stairs everyday.

Also want to get a pram like Uppababy vista which baby could nap in carrycot of.

Is this enough to cover us for day time? Or should we be getting something light and portable like Moses basket or sleepyhead?

Help! Smile

Newborns often want to sleep on you tbh! When mine were last newborn stage I put them to nap on the pram carrycot while I pottered about.

Some people have a moses basket but you can do without.

Orangedaisy · 08/09/2018 12:48

Both my DDs napped in the pram until about 4 months. Generally left in the hall when I was pottering about, or in whichever room I settled in if I stopped.

muststoplurking · 08/09/2018 12:50

A sling - the caboo close is excellent.

PonderLand · 08/09/2018 12:52

We used the pram carry cot. It made it a lot easier to get the baby out of the house if we had to go out. Our carrycot was quite big so it lasted until 8 months then we put him down for a nap in his cot upstairs.

icclemunchy · 08/09/2018 12:54

On me or in the sling. She screamed blue murder if she was put anywhere else

I spent a large amount of money on Moses basket, snuz pod, sleepyhead, and cot. For the first 5 months he would only sleep on the 2.99 ikea changing mat! Babies are fickle.

BigBlueBubble · 08/09/2018 12:59

My Snuzpod was too heavy to carry up and down stairs, especially when I’d just given birth. It’s large and unwieldy too. We tried bringing it downstairs a few times and chipped the paint off by knocking it on door handles etc. So after that we just left it in the bedroom and baby napped in the pram carrycot in the living room.

To be honest, I was so tired that most of the time I took my baby to the bedroom to nap and put him in the Snuzpod while I slept on the bed.

Now he’s bigger I’ve bought a travel cot to put in the living room, which can be used as a playpen or for naps. So I have somewhere safe to put him where he can’t crawl off and get into trouble while I make a cuppa or answer the door!

welshweasel · 08/09/2018 13:01

You won’t carry the snuzpod downstairs. We used a sleepyhead wherever we were, so on the sofa, dining room table etc. Sometimes slept in the pram carrycot.

happymummy12345 · 08/09/2018 13:02

I only ever let mine sleep in the crib upstairs, day and night. I had a video monitor and checked on him regularly. Don't see the need for them to sleep downstairs at all. Plus I hate Moses baskets so would never ever put any child of mine in one.

SprogletsMum · 08/09/2018 13:02

Mine all slept on me until they were at least 1.

welshweasel · 08/09/2018 13:18

@happymummy12345 - presumably you know that ensuring you baby sleeps in the same room as you day and night, until at least 6 months old reduces the risk of SIDS?

Just in case other people are reading this who didn’t know.

LeeCee · 08/09/2018 13:18

Thanks for all the replies so far. Sounds like my suspicions on the Snuzpod being too heavy to lug about were right. Will definitely look into slings. Worth buying before? Or just rent first?

Sounds good OP, we had DS in a bedside crib upstairs and the pram carrycot downstairs until he was 6 months. He was also partial to napping on his changing mat when he was teeny.

They sleep anywhere and everywhere!

DD1 liked to sleep next to me on the sofa and then took many naps in her various pushchairs. She slept in her carseat quite a bit too. As a baby she was not much of a sleeper and did not want to settle. She needed to be constrained (in a pram/carseat/pushchair) to realise how tired she was and then she'd conk out. At night, she slept in her cot in her room.

Before DD1 was born, we bought an old pram which I thought would make a good 'downstairs' bed. DD1 hated it and NEVER slept in it!!

DD2 was easier about sleeping. She slept in the old pram downstairs (like I'd planned for DD1) and in her cot at night, first in our room and then in hers. Unlike DD1, she could be put down somewhere for a sleep. She also did a fair amount of sleeping in her carseat and pushchair.

Angelmiracle · 08/09/2018 13:24

Carrycot worked for us until 4 months at least then travel cot.

PurpleTygrrr · 08/09/2018 13:28

At night my DD slept in the bednest... like a next to me crib and in the day it was either on me, her pram carrycot or we bought one of those sleeping pods from Aldi. The Aldi one was only £20 and fab for daytime sleeps although I don't think any sleep positioners are suitable for night time sleeping. I looked at the sleepyhead, I just didn't want to fork out for something that would only be used for daytime naps.
Congratulations on your pregnancy, my DD is 7 months now and as much as I love this stage I miss that lovely snuggly brand new bit!

Pamdoo · 08/09/2018 13:32

Depends on them, my baby wouldn't sleep anywhere but on me, he can't stand laying flat so everything we brought was a waste of money! I wish I hadn't bothered with a Moses basket and just used my carrycot on my pram to be honest for the very early days when he would be put down, as the carrycot had hardly any use as did the Moses basket. The only other place he would sleep was his bouncer (supervised of course)

I think they are like cats, you can buy all the beds you like but they'll sleep where they like Grin

RainbowsAndUnicorns23 · 08/09/2018 13:37

My baby will be 5 weeks on Monday.. he likes to sleep on me! Maybe just get a cheap moses basket and stand for downstairs? He sometimes goes down but mostly in my arms!

mrs2468 · 08/09/2018 13:42

@welshweasel worth pointing out it's a recommendation and guideline like everything you can follow or not follow.

bibizizi · 08/09/2018 13:48

Travel cots are good, you can pad it out with lots of blankets or a sheepskin when there newborn. It doubles up as a playpen when DC is crawling too.

Pinkandproud · 08/09/2018 13:50

Can I just ask - I know it’s advised young babies don’t stay in car seats for more than 30 minutes at a time etc but is there something different about the ones on prams so it’s safe? Sorry, I’m confused! Blush

OlderThanAverageforMN · 08/09/2018 13:50

@happymummy12345***@welshweasel*
Me too, only had a pram and a cot. Babies slept in the pram during the day, often outside, and then in the carrycot inside, either in the bedroom for the first couple of weeks, and then in their own cot, in their own bedroom, without monitors.... hides before she gets shot down in flames.....

PeoniesandPretties · 08/09/2018 13:58

@OlderThanAverageforMN me too. My ten week old enjoys napping in his sleep next to me, the moses basket wasn't comfy enough for his liking. I have a video monitor I carry around with me. How do you imagine getting anything done if you sat and stared at them the whole time?
Plus like my husband said when I questioned how baby sleeps, we'll whose watching him whilst we're asleep?
Of course there's guidelines and I'm all for doing what works best for you, but think about how we were all raised.... We're still ok aren't we?
Also hiding behind cushion before firing commences lol

katmarie · 08/09/2018 13:59

I bought two cheap Moses baskets on eBay, and brand new mattresses because of the sids guidelines. One downstairs, one in our room. Ds went in the one downstairs during the day, and the upstairs one at night, which worked well for us. now he's 7 months he either sleeps on the sofa next to me or his dad, or in his cot in his room if we're not planning on staying sitting with him.

anotherangel2 · 08/09/2018 14:06

Pinkandproud the car seats on prams are just normal car seats. The advice for car seats is babies should only go on essential journeys and under 6 weeks olds should only been in them for up to 30 mins a time.
