Where does a newborn sleep during the day?

I'm 22+5 FTM and making my lists of everything I need for when baby arrives. Looking for advice on what I need for daytime sleeps for newborn.

Planning on getting the Snuzpod bedside crib - and the top of this lifts off so we could use the bassinet downstairs during the day. But seeing it in a shop the top is quite heavy so I may not be up for lugging it up and down stairs everyday.

Also want to get a pram like Uppababy vista which baby could nap in carrycot of.

Is this enough to cover us for day time? Or should we be getting something light and portable like Moses basket or sleepyhead?

Help! Smile

Most newborns prefer to sleep on your chest, so the answer is usually a sling!

Bubblysqueak · 08/09/2018 14:09

Ours slept in the Moses basket (which was useful as they would sleep in it in the evening and would be carried upstairs in it when we went to bed) when they were slightly older they also slept in their swing that had a newborn insert which made it lie flat.

Mine slept in a sleepyhead during the day. They're amazing things. Smile

I had a pram downstairs that I could keep an eye on, and a cot/baby monitor upstairs.

BeautifulPossibilities · 08/09/2018 14:15

Only on me! Preferably with a boob in mouth. Slept fine at night in our room so just used a sling. We had a pram carrycot but rarely happened. Wish I'd just gone with it!

My first only slept on me or DH. She loved to be snuggled. Her little brother was perfectly content in the Moses basket. It really depends what they are like.

TittyGolightly · 08/09/2018 14:31

Just to note that the SIDS guidelines aren’t about you being able to see the baby - it’s about them being able to hear you. Theory is that they can forget to breathe whilst asleep. Being able to hear you breathe reminds them. No monitor can replace that.

SnuggyBuggy · 08/09/2018 14:32

I would wait and see what your baby is like. Some won't be put down for naps.

spinabifidamom · 08/09/2018 14:33

My children often slept in my bed. I did not purchase a crib for them- honestly beds are safer.

Pamdoo · 08/09/2018 15:16

Can I just ask - I know it’s advised young babies don’t stay in car seats for more than 30 minutes at a time etc but is there something different about the ones on prams so it’s safe? Sorry, I’m confused!

No, includes car seats on prams or travel systems!

carrycot or the sleepyhead is what we used. sleepyhead very portable and handy for visiting family/ friends etc

enbh · 11/09/2018 16:43

Mine slept in Moses basket and it was a godsend, I was bloody lost when she grew out of it!!

ANewHope18 · 11/09/2018 16:50

If baby goes to sleep before parents at night where do they sleep before parents go to bed? Downstairs or upstairs? I've been reading about differentiating between day and night sleeps but if baby is to be with you should they stay in the living room with noise and light etc or be put down to sleep in your bedroom with a monitor? This confuses me! ConfusedSmile

SnuggyBuggy · 11/09/2018 16:55

I don't think there is a consensus on that. I know people who leave them upstairs with a monitor because they don't sleep downstairs anymore.

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 11/09/2018 17:03

Baby bouncer or pram here. But she did move upstairs to nap in her cot at about 4 months old as she needed it dark/quiet. Initially I’d sit in the chair in the nursery with my phone but at about 5 months I started leaving her to it with the monitor so I could get things done.

DuckPie · 11/09/2018 17:14

We used a Moses basket downstairs. Sleepyheads are also not recommended for sleeping.

My daughter died from SIDS whilst sleeping in a separate room to me. I absolutely can’t stand the posts that say ‘we were raised this way and were fine’ or ‘they’re just guidelines’ etc. Of course, feel free to ignore guidelines and the majority will be absolutely fine but ignoring them increases the risk of SIDS and I don’t know why anyone thinks that’s a risk worth taking.

My daughter happened to be 7 months so we didn’t actually ignore any guidelines but I’ll always wonder if it made a difference

Sandstormbrewing · 11/09/2018 17:14

@Pinkandproud no, there is nothing special about car seats on prams and baby's shouldn't be in them for more than 30 minutes, including in the car. People do though.

Sleepyhead

DaddysGirl36 · 11/09/2018 21:32

We have used a Sleepyhead since Day 2 and our son loves it and sleeps really well in it, better than anywhere else. We only use it downstairs and he goes into it awake and self settles in it. It's always in the same place but we have occasionally moved it and took it away for overnight stays - all fine. He does not sleep as long in his bedside crib upstairs but it has more space so is blatantly not as cosy. I just live with the fact he goes to sleep for the longest times downstairs and we work around it.

@ANewHope18 - We differentiate between day and night by switching to lamps throughout the house from the minute it gets dark, downstairs has the TV on all the time but we do turn volume down on an evening and upstairs is always quiet really.

@DuckPie - So sorry to hear about your daughter. SIDS terrifies me still. My son is 6 months this week. Not planning on putting him in his own room anytime soon but at 7 months, I think most would have put their child in another room so hope this does not haunt you. Hugs.

My DS nappies either in his soft playmat or on my chest. I kept his naps in daylight to help his body clock adjust to day/night. When he was 5/6 months I moved him to his cot to sleep for naps and darkened the room (he was already sleeping through and had his day/night sorted) and he had longer naps. Was great for bedtime sleep too as obviously sleep breeds sleep! Whatever works for your baby (which will probably be sleeping on you a lot Grin)

Good luck!

BlueBug45 · 12/09/2018 02:21

Mine currently sleeps in babybox in living room, moses basket in bedroom. Though really prefers to sleep on anyone regardless of age .

Charlottejade89 · 12/09/2018 07:57

My dd is 7 weeks old and sleeps in a Moses basket day and night. I take it downstairs and put next to the sofa during the day. She had sepsis after birth and had to stay in hospital for almost a week and she would only sleep on me then but since she's been home I have persisted in putting her in her bed so she gets used to it and I can get things done
