Is her bump too big for the amount of weeks?

Hi all - not sure I’m posting in the right place, so I apologise if I’m not!

My cousin, who is also my best friend, found out she was pregnant a while back. She’s 14+3 today, but her bump looks too big!!
I know that may seem a bizarre thing to say because all women show at different times and in different ways with every pregnancy, but she seems to have been showing since she was about 8 weeks. Only slightly to begin with and it was more bloating than bump, but her bumps seems to have popped. I saw her on Tuesday (14+1) and her stomach was perfectly round and it’s hard. I didn’t think that it could be so big by this amount of weeks? I’ve always said to her she’s a month ahead because of how her period was in the cycle she fell pregnant and it just makes me think I’m right 😂

Also, her 12 week scan put her at 12+4, but the measurement on the top was 14cm. No idea what it actually means, but most women’s scans - actually, all of them - that I’ve seen from 12 weeks seems to be about 10cm. Wondered if anybody thought the same as I do?! She’s considering getting a second opinion with a private ultrasound!

Yes her bump is huge.

Loyaultemelie · 07/09/2018 16:02

I was that big at 10 weeks with twins (second pregnancy sadly later lost) and by my third pregnancy was easily that big at 14 weeks. With her previous miscarriages (Thanks for her btw it's heartbreaking) her body might be stretched. People can probably explain it better than me and my migraine brain

BlueBug45 · 07/09/2018 16:27

As PP said if she has been pregnant before then her ligaments and muscles will have stretched before So she will look bigger quicker as her body knows how to respond to pregnancy hormones. However it doesn't mean the baby is actually big.

Gobletoffire · 07/09/2018 16:36

What time of day was it taken? I’m 12 weeks and have a really little bump in the morning and by the evening time it’s doubled in size from my bloat throughout the day lol Grin

Celebelly · 07/09/2018 16:37

I'm 18 weeks with my first and have quite a sizeable bump (and I've actually not gained any weight!). My friend is also 18 weeks and you wouldn't even know she was pregnant. Googling '18 weeks bump' shows a huge range of sizes!

Her 12-week scan will have dated her with much more accuracy than the size of her bump.

CrabbyPatty · 07/09/2018 17:10

Sorry not read all the comments, but my bump was quite visible early in my (current) pregnancy after a recent miscarriage - I think its because the uterus has recently stretched and hasn't had time to shrink back. x

BigBlueBubble · 07/09/2018 17:15

I was that big at 14 weeks. My bump continued to be bigger than it should have been, and by the end it was so huge that my stomach was ruined. My skin is permanently stretched and won’t go back, it just hangs like a flappy apron.

dinosaurkisses · 07/09/2018 17:21

Please stop telling her that she’s further along than her midwives and HCP’s are telling her.

At best, it’ll just begin to annoy her, at worst she’ll believe you and the last month of her pregnancy will be even more frustrating than normal because she thought she’d definitely have had the baby by now.

EggbertHeartsTina · 07/09/2018 17:24

I'm only 6 weeks and incredibly bloated, I look about 5 months.

CornishMaid1 · 07/09/2018 17:37

Some women do get bigger bumps earlier. It could be bloating adding into the size of her bump.

The dating scan will help, but tell her not to worry. It could just be a bigger baby or she could be further along than she thinks. Any chance she is having more than one?

CautionHormone · 07/09/2018 18:25

Thank you to the women who have posted since I last commented - you’ve all been massively helpful instead of those who have slammed and accused me of telling her she’s fat all the time and patronising!

I know some women can show quicker etc but she is the one who asked me and being her best friend as well as her cousin I told her my thoughts too. I hadn’t told her til that point that she was further along, it was my suspicions!

I never realised that her previous miscarriage could maybe be the reason she’s showing more but it makes perfect sense!

Gobletoffire (amazing name by the way) - the photo was taken around 1pm. She said it can fluctuate as the day goes on but now it’s harder it’s pretty much consistent!

She said she’s expecting it to slow down in a couple of weeks because of how rapidly the baby is changing and growing at the moment (doesn’t it double in size pretty much every week or so?) but she’s excited to start feeling movement - she’s also asked me to ask when people felt their first movements and whether because she’s got a bump already it’ll be sooner than the 20-22 weeks most people feel it with their first?!

I'm almost at the same stage (14 weeks exactly) and my bump is tiny in comparison. At least right now! I was massive earlier in the pregnancy, but that was bloating. At about 12 weeks my 'bump' deflated and the actual baby bump started developing.

ThirdChildFourthPile · 07/09/2018 19:03

OP I guess if you think about it the difference of a scan (if she was a month ahead) would be whether she was 12 weeks or 16 weeks.
If a sonographer put your friend at 12 weeks (or there abouts) when she was actually at 16 weeks then they would be out of a job because they would be particularly shit at it.

You just have to trust the sonographer.
But also, the scan picture of a 12 week fetus is a very different shape to that of a 16 week one.
So perhaps have her look at her scan and look online at scans at 16 weeks to reassure herself that she is definitely the gestation that she is.

ThirdChildFourthPile · 07/09/2018 19:06

I've just seen your last question.

I felt DC 1, 2 and 3 at 14 weeks.

twiglet · 08/09/2018 07:32

Everyone is different with feeling movements, second pregnancy is usually much earlier from 16 weeks but some can at about 13 weeks onwards. First pregnancy they say between 16 to 25 weeks but usually towards the later end of that. I'm 18 weeks and just started feeling a bit of movement/kicks but it's pretty sporadic and can be a few days apart.

Rarfy · 08/09/2018 07:40

Ive had a decent bump since about 10-12 weeks and im fat i mean a size 16-18. Last week.i was being asked by strangers when im due at 18weeks. I am very obviously pregnant and look mcuh further a long than i actually am.

Bump is also hard. At last scam baby was on 50th percentile round abouts so not big. If there was anything to be concerned about the hospital would pick it up. Let her enjoy her bump. I love mine!

Bluebellysmell · 08/09/2018 09:11

Feeling movement doesn't depend on the size of the bump, it will depend a lot on the mothers build (generally larger ladies feel kicks later), amount of fluid around baby (more fluid less likely to feel movement) but mainly on the position of the baby - I was monitored on a couple of occasions due to reduced movements, and on checking my son had actually turned to face my back meaning I was having difficulty feeling him

Fuckedoffat48b · 08/09/2018 18:09

I looked like that at about 16 weeks and am now measuring bang on for fundal height. How tall is she? I'm 5'2'' and think my bump looks bigger on me than it does on a tall person iyswim.

SpottingTheZebras · 08/09/2018 18:19

Yes that is a big bump but some women are. The measurement of 14cm indicates that she is bigger than normal at that gestation as it should be the same cm for each week of pregnancy - but the fundal measurement is a very vague and typically incorrect way of determining how far along a woman is.

I would trust the dating scan especially since it was held at the right sort of gestation (around 12 weeks) when it is most accurate.

GreenMeerkat · 08/09/2018 18:25

It looks quite big but it could also be bloating too! If the scan dates have her at 12 weeks then I'd trust that over bump size as an accurate measurement.

This was mine at just under 13 weeks! It is my third pregnancy but still. You can get big bumps early on!

Polly99 · 08/09/2018 18:32

Scans are not likely to be a month out. My first scan was out by a week; my second scan at 20 weeks was out by a day (I knew when I ovulated) so virtually bang on.

She’s just one of those people who get a big bump. Is she skinny? I had a very thin colleague who didn’t look pregnant at all and then suddenly at 12 weeks looked about 5 months gone. It was a bit like when I take my Spanx off...

BlancheM · 08/09/2018 19:04

It doesn't look like it's 'all baby' though like a hard bump. It's will be part water weight/bloating/genetic disposition, plus if she's an apple shape then any weight will go straight to the belly area.
Everyone is different, it really doesn't matter or mean anything

BillywigSting · 08/09/2018 19:11

Bumps definitely show differently.

I was pregnant around the same time as a friend of mine, except I was four months ahead.

My bump was smaller at term than hers was at 20 weeks and my bump was pretty hefty by then.

Both first pregnancies and I'm a good 8 inches shorter than her so you would have thought my.bump would stick out more than hers.

But like pp have said, I'd just trust what the professionals say. It's literally their job to know this kind of thing

BlueBug45 · 08/09/2018 21:11

OP felt my baby - my first - at 14 weeks. Thought it was wind at first but baby was a very active mover through out pregnancy. I had a posterior high placenta. If your cousin's placenta is anterior then she may not feel movement until 24 weeks at the latest

LittleKitty1985 · 09/09/2018 13:00

It's probably just a mixture of baby, bloating and belly fat and I bet she's enjoying being able to relax and not have to hold her stomach in anymore. I can make my (15w) bump look huge by properly relaxing and letting it all hang out haha.
