Consultant said this to me at my first appointment with him, just wondering how true it is?

Just for a bit background... Im 5ft3, a size 22/24 and was 9lb7 born
My partner(not that i think it matters) is 6ft4, a xxl (doesnt look it) and was 10lb born.

Anyone had experience of this?

I've noticed a link between gestational diabetes, large birthweight and mothers weight gain. But that us purely abbecdotal.

Yikesisthatmeinthemirror · 03/09/2018 20:45

If you have a large baby you will get tested for diabetes in future pregnancies, it's a clear medical link!

Littlefish · 03/09/2018 20:46

The consultant would obviously have more information than me. However, I had a high BMI when I had dd and although I was told I was having a baby of at least 9lbs, she was only 6lbs 10 when she was born!

RefuseTheLies · 03/09/2018 20:47

I had GD. I was 15 and a half stone when I gave birth (14 and a half stone when I got pregnant) and my baby was 8lbs.

Thistles24 · 03/09/2018 20:47

Well, a lot will depend on what you’re eating during pregnancy. If you’re careful about what you eat, then there’s every chance you’ll have an average baby, but if you’re over eating chances are the baby will be bigger. Hope that doesn’t sound rude- I’m plus size myself! First 2 pregnancies I ate what I wanted and had babies over 9lb, this time I’ve been much more careful and they expect him to be 7lb.

tequillashotsandsluttdrops · 03/09/2018 20:51

I'm 5ft 4, I was 8st 3 when I fell pregnant with my last child who weighed in at 10lb 14, no diabetes, nothing not even an indication I was having a large baby.

StubbleTurnips · 03/09/2018 20:52

I'm 5'10 and started at 15st ish with each pregnancy, lost weight carrying DD through HG - she was 8.11. Put on an eye watering amount with DS and he was fucking massive 9lb13.
So anecdotally I'd agree, all the boys / men on my side are tall and broad though, the gents are around 6'2 or taller.... so didn't think DS would be small.

3boysandabump · 03/09/2018 20:56

I started my last pregnant overweight ended up putting on 5 stone had gestational diabetes and my son was 7lb 8oz when he was born at 39 weeks.
I didn't have gd in my other pregnancies started at the same weight and out about the same weight on and the others were 8lb 10, 8lb 6 and 8lb 12

Luckystar1 · 03/09/2018 20:56

Hmm not sure I agree (GD aside). I am 5ft 5 and weigh 8ish stone and had 8lb 11oz and 9lb babies. Ok, no mahoosive but certainly well above average.

Good luck with your pregnancy I wish you all the very best for a healthy and happy one!!

HavelockVetinari · 03/09/2018 20:57

In general the consultant is right - fat mothers are MUCH more likely to have GD or just larger babies (who are likely to become overweight children or adults). However, there are people who buck the trend by eating right during pregnancy and ensuring their DC eats healthily and exercises. Since you're concerned about it now that stands you in good stead to make sure your DC doesn't follow in his/her parents' footsteps. Flowers

captainshortie · 03/09/2018 20:59

Ive lost about 6lb so far since I found out, purerly through loss of appetite/not really wanting chocolate and more cucumber, carrots and brocoli!

Ouch to the 10lb'er!!

Theyre obviously keeping an eye on my blood sugar but its quite normal. I dont actually eat that bad, even before pregnancy, i must just have a slow metabolism.

I was told that a baby was "made" to fit its mothers pelvis. But...surely if you are over weight... your pelvis would remain the same size?Confused

captainshortie · 03/09/2018 21:04

Im very confident in the case of "i wont forcr my bad habits onto my child"

I.e my SIL doesnt like breakfast, instead will happily munch half(sometimes full) pack of chocolate digestives. Ergo her DC now doesnt "like" breakfast, would rather eat chocolate because she was never told its important!

My mam doesnt eat breakfast but we always had to? Be it tea and toast or cereal, so i know a child needs to eat healthy. Im definatly not eating for 2. I cut everything right back and am walking alot more.

I’m fairly large. 5’8 size 18 and ‘big framed’
Healthy pregnancy and baby was 6lb 15, everyone was so suprised I had a smaller baby, me included.

Acidrain · 03/09/2018 21:13

I'm 5ft 8 and about a size 18 and my little one was 6lb 5oz when born! Don't think it matters personally.

ISeeTheLight · 03/09/2018 21:16

I'm a size 18, 5'9. DD was 6 lbs 3 when born and 2 weeks late. I think it's bollocks.
My mum is similar to me, my birthed and I were average size babies though DB had an absolutely massive head (as in hats size 3-5 year old).

ISeeTheLight · 03/09/2018 21:16

Taylor22 · 03/09/2018 21:17

I was 5ft9 and a size 12 before pregnancy. I didn't gain much weight and I'm both pregnancies delivered 9lb+ babies. Babies on both sides of them family were routinely over 9lb.

Fabellini · 03/09/2018 21:19

Hmm...I’m 5’3” and was 9 and a half stone when pregnant with ds2 - who weighed 9lb 13 oz.
I was checked for gestational diabetes the day he was born but didn’t have it.

dementedpixie · 03/09/2018 21:21

I was 15/16 stone prior to pregnancy and my babies were 7lb 11oz and 7lb 13oz. I had borderline GD with dd but it was diet controlled. Didn't get it with ds

Snappedandfarted2018 · 03/09/2018 21:23

I was 5,1 and slim had 3 dc 7,2 (boy) 8,5 (girl) and 9,6 (boy) the last two were with dh who was a large baby 10,2 he’s extremely lean man. It’s clearly obvious that it’s genetics from him especially given my first boy with ex was the smallest baby.

schopenhauer · 03/09/2018 21:24

5 2 and 9stone before pregnancy and baby was 9 lb 6. I did gain weight (about 2.5 stone so a fair bit but not excessive I wouldn’t say). I think it’s a genetic factor as I eat pretty healthy, exercised throughout pregnancy and didn’t have gestational diabetes to my knowledge.

actualpuffins · 03/09/2018 21:24

It seems to be linked to the size of the dad. Have seen loads of petite women with tall partners having enormous babies.

schopenhauer · 03/09/2018 21:26

My partner is slim and 5ft 9 so didn’t seem to be linked for me personally.

Verbena87 · 03/09/2018 21:27

Not always.

I’m 5’6” and was just over 8 stone when I got pregnant. Ate healthily throughout. No gestational diabetes (they tested due to baby measuring large for dates on scan). Baby was 10lbs9oz.

So I think some of it is just nature being it’s usual flukey self. Ask your consultant for the evidence.

And good luck with your pregnancy Smile
