A quick question about nappies...

This is probably a silly question, but FTM here and DP wants to start adding bits to our Tesco orders.

Lots of people seem to like the Tesco nappies for fit, so I thought we'd give those a go to start with. But how many do we need? Size 1 and 2, in particular, are pretty close in weight bands: 4-11lb for size 1 and 6-13lb for size 2. Anyone know what's up with this? Do people tend to use size 1 for a couple of weeks (if at all depending on baby body shape - is this a thing???), and then size 2 for maybe a month or so (or is it more like 6 months?)?

We don't have a big supermarket anywhere nearby, so although we can go to smaller ones as and when, it's much better value for us to add a few massive economy packs to our deliveries over the next few months.

Sorry for the probably daft question, but I know very little about babies, and even less about how fast they grow, nappies, and that kind of information. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Not quite your question, but would you consider cloth nappies?

They come in one size and grow with baby.

For the hospital I have a couple of small packets of newborn nappies to get me started and I’ll move back on to the washables once I get home and settled.

They say newborn babies go through up to 10 nappies a day... I can’t remember it being that many.

SuperstarDJ · 03/09/2018 14:44

Unless you end up being pre-term I’d skip the size 1 if I were you and stock up on the size 2.

Singerleon · 03/09/2018 14:45

I’d be careful about buying too many of one type of nappy before the baby is here! Different babies seem to suit different nappies.

I had DD in the Asda Little angels but then they started to leak all the time when she grew. We only use pampers premium protection now because we get the fewest leaks and no rash with them. I didn’t like Tesco ones at all.

I’ve heard people rave about nappies that I hated and some people would never use pampers but we love them!

Basically don’t buy too many or you could end up giving them away or lying at the back of a cupboard.

Size wise, a pack of size 1’s is grand for the first couple of weeks then baby will be into size 2 for a while. Good luck! Flowers

NotTaken i am not due until dec but have started reading up on cloth nappies. Can you reccommend a type that are good one size grows with baby? I'm finding it all a bit confusing!

ineedwine99 · 03/09/2018 14:46

Hi OP, we started on newborn, just one packet to see how we got on re size, absorbency etc, plus you should't order too many anyway in case baby reacts to the nappy. Good luck with your lovely new baby

Liland · 03/09/2018 14:46

Reusable nappies are not something we're considering.

So maybe one big pack of size 1, and a few big packs of size 2 to cover us in the beginning?

Oh that makes sense about the nappy brands. Maybe I'll just get one of each to start with then and I could do a big order very soon after as needed, in case he doesn't get on with the first brand!

Thanks!

The smaller the size the more you get in a pack and the less they cost. You also tend to find that they go through more of the smaller sizes (well this is what I have always found).

My two children were born 8.5lbs so they stayed in size 1 for about a month and the size 2 for about 2 months. They were certainly in size 3 by 3 months. My aim was to keep them in the smaller sizes for as long as possible as it was cheaper. However as they grow, nappies can fill up faster and leak and so you know it's time to move up a size.

Different babies also suit different brands....although mine personally have always worn any brand well. Currently pregnant with 3rd and have stocked up about 6 packs of size 1 and 6 packs of size 2 which I envisage lasting the first couple of months.

carringtonm · 03/09/2018 14:50

Our son was 7lb 5oz at birth and wore Asda size one nappies until about 5 weeks old, and is still in size twos now at 12 weeks (and will be for a while longer yet!) Every baby is different but that might help.

NotTakenUsername · 03/09/2018 14:51

Also remember people often give a packet of nappies along with a baby gift.

gg5891 · 03/09/2018 14:51

My DS was born 8lb 12oz and I kept him in size 1 until about 8 weeks, if you put them in a size too big poo will leak everywhere. He's well over 14lb now and in size 2 nowhere near ready for size 3. I found weight means nothing - it's more to do with leg size!! If it fits round the legs then it's fine.

OakElmAsh · 03/09/2018 14:51

I found I could only bulk-order when they got to size 3 - both of mine flew through the others in a matter of weeks

gg5891 · 03/09/2018 14:51

Just to add that's the tesco brand ones

Liland · 03/09/2018 14:53

I've read that newborn nappies often leak because their little legs aren't chubby enough yet to fill the leg holes - when does this resolve itself? How will I know if they're leaking because of skinny legs, or if it's just a poor nappy fit?

Aldi do big boxes of size 1 and 2 nappies for about £6.00 they were our preferred brand for fit, price and absorbency. Found that the asda ones leaked, pampers stank and the tesco felt quite rigid and papery.

Blondemother · 03/09/2018 14:54

I bought and put away huge boxes of Pampers when they were on offer - a box or a couple of big bags in each size 1 to 5.
I cannot remember how quickly we got through them, but we still have a big bag of size 3s in the cupboard so she must have been going through a growth spurt at that stage!

I would second other posters - you might not get on with a particular brand (bad fit on your baby’s body shape, gives nappy rash) so best not to go too crazy. We were lucky and everything seemed fine on our baby girl.

You could ask the shop if you can return unopened packs/boxes and swap for a different size/brand?

Greenwomanofmay · 03/09/2018 14:54

I used about 6 packs of size 1 on an 8lb 12oz baby. Definitely try different makes and get the ones with the wee indicator strip. Boots, Morrisons and Sainsbury's nappies I find very good. But I have tried all makes.

SydneyCarton · 03/09/2018 14:58

We’ve always had Tesco nappies, the fragrance free wipes are good as well and suitable for newborn babies. My son was 7lb 5oz at birth and was in size 0 for about a week, then size 1 until 7 weeks. He’s eight weeks on Thursday and has just gone into size 2. My girls were 6 lb 8 and 6 lb 11 and were in size 1 till about 12 weeks. I was also able to swap an unopened Tesco pack of 1s for 2s so don’t worry if you overstock!

Liland · 03/09/2018 14:59

So many comments, thank you all for your thoughts!

I wish we had an Aldi, all we have is a small Lidl (anyone have any experience with these?) and a big Morrisons a fair trek from our house. Also little Tesco expresses here and there, and a small Boots.

Size one usually don’t come in huge packs because they don’t fit long. We bought 2 packs of size 1 from Aldi and 1 pack of size 2 (I always keep a pack of bigger unopened in case we run out - that way they will fit and won’t be wasted).
We actually got some pampers size 0 (normal 8lb baby) because it was easier to keep belly button clip out of the nappy. We used them for first 1.5 weeks.
Other things you could start buying include wipes, plain vests in a variety of sizes, pack of dummies, Muslins, breast pads and maternity pads.

BertieBotts · 03/09/2018 15:03

We got loads of size two but I don't think DC will be in them for a while yet, and he wasn't huge - just 7lb 9oz/3.4kg. He's had the odd size 0/new baby nappy from hospital which fitted him really well and then the size 1s we have at home are perfect for him and even feel a little bit big (but don't leak). I can't see us moving into size 2 for a while - size 1 cover up to 5kg.

Stringofpearls · 03/09/2018 15:08

I'm with those who say Tesco nappies are great. Our daughter was 6lb7 at birth and in size 1 for the first couple of months. The size 2 were too big before then. We've a set of Bambino Mio reusable nappies too, but these were too big when she was born, she is just about able.to use them now at nearly 4 months. I'd say she used about 8 nappies a day to start with and now goes through about 6 or so.

Greenwomanofmay · 03/09/2018 15:17

Lidl nappies are very good but they don't have the wee indicator strip which is very useful in the first week or so when the midwives want to know if baby is weeing.
