Whooping cough vaccine

I am so nervous to have my whooping cough vaccine! I'm 32 weeks and I've booked in to have it tomorrow but I'm so anxious it's going to make something go wrong!

OP posts:
Merrydoula · 28/08/2018 16:25

To be honest, I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on this. I asked on a forum before and got flooded with stories of it causing late miscarriage etc, people told me the vaccine hasn't ever been clinically trialed on pregnant women, contains aluminium etc. This really freaked me out and scared me.

NerrSnerr · 28/08/2018 16:26

Have a search on YouTube for babies with Whooping cough. That will change your mind. Whooping cough is so serious in small babies- fatal in some. The vaccine is hugely important.

Aprilshowersinaugust · 28/08/2018 16:27

I nearly lost ds at a fortnight old to WC.
Have the jab op, just the start of decision making as a parent!!

NerrSnerr · 28/08/2018 16:29

There is a link on this page to a study about safety and the vaccination www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/whooping-cough-vaccination-pregnant/

Doesthiscountasausername · 28/08/2018 16:29

ethicly morning can be tested on pregnant women, however the majority of medicines and vaccines are safe to take during breastfeeding. Vaccines reccommmend and encouraged by the NHS are recommended for a reason. Asking on a forum you’ll get a lot of opinion and anecdotal eveidnce. If you have doubts or questions websites such as WHO, NICE or clinical research papers are the best places to get evidence based information. Congratulations on your pregnancy and try to enjoy the remainder see if it! Won’t be long till your little one is here

Hmmalittlefishy · 28/08/2018 16:30

As above the vaccine is really important
Little babies can go downhill when I'll very quickly.
If it balances some of the other posts I've had it 3 times and 3 healthy babies. The NHS wouldn't spend time and money on vaccinations that were dangerous.

*in the U.K.

Yes is worrying getting vaccines or taking medication during pregnancy, but I never hesitated to get the vaccine. If my baby had whooping cough that I could have prevented then I wouldn't be able to forgive myself for that.

December2018 · 28/08/2018 16:33

I've not long had mine OP I'm 24 weeks tomorrow and I had mine at 21 weeks, my midwife gave me mine and I was very anxious and she reassured me that it's not a live vaccine and will cause no harm what so ever to my baby....
but if he got whooping cough he could potentially die as he will not be vaccinated for the first 9 weeks and it will be winter when he arrives and it's more common then apparently....
I decided prevention is better than the alternative in my case..
I was so worried tho

TheCag · 28/08/2018 16:34

Will your baby be having the routine schedule of vaccinations once they are born? I just consider it the first of that sequence of vaccines.

I had the whooping cough vaccine with my two previous pregnancies and it was fine, will be having it again this time.

There is a study on the bmj website which concludes that there is no increased risk of stillbirth, best to look at reputable sources for information, not anonymous forums.

oreolovegood · 28/08/2018 16:35

I'm not an antivax person at all! Just having lost a baby before and having severe anxiety and depression during this pregnancy it's not an easy thing to do hence the fact I've left it so long! That's all 😊

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 28/08/2018 16:44

I would be very wary asking for vaccination advice on here. There are some hardcore anti-vaxxer's who will try to blind you with 'research' - research, which is in fact inaccurate, scaremongering bullshit.
Speak to your doctor or midwife if you're worried as they should be able to reassure you and explain the facts.

OutPinked · 28/08/2018 16:44

I had mine done a fortnight ago at 28 weeks. It was absolutely fine but he did move a lot less the following day to the extent I went in for monitoring. All was fine but when I googled, it seems common for movements to reduce following it. I have no idea why! It didn’t hurt at all, I didn’t even feel the injection going in and it’s preferable to risking DC’s life as a fragile newborn.

RowenaDedalus · 28/08/2018 16:47

It isn’t a ‘live’ vaccine - it’s perfectly safe. The NHS website is really good and clear. It makes your arm hurt though, which surprised me! It ached for a few days which is not ideal when you’re meant to sleep on your side!

Liverbird77 · 28/08/2018 17:11

Had mine around 16 weeks. I've since had 20 week scan and all is fine. I had whooping cough as a child, along with measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, because I wasnt vaccinated against anything. I am not prepared to risk it with my child.

Pebblesandfriends · 28/08/2018 17:16

I understand where you are coming from. I was so stressed out trying to make the decision whether to have it or not. I researched it thoroughly and even ended up phoning vtge nurse in tears ( hormones). To her credit she told me it was my decision to make. In the end I spoke to a GP friend who reassured me enough to go through with it. My DS was completely fine. It's your decision though Flowers

allthatmalarkey · 28/08/2018 17:18

The chance of a baby under 12 months dying if they catch whooping cough is 1 in 100. If there were any chance of MC, they would inform you. Stop trusting stuff you've seen on the internet and start trusting the professionals who work in the NHS. They're the ones who could be fired, sued or prosecuted if they make the wrong call.

By the way, you naturally contain arsenic and that's not doing you or your baby any harm (just don't add more).

Anm4 · 28/08/2018 17:20

I had mine at 21 weeks, my arm ached for a few days but that was that. I wouldn't hesitate to have it done as the videos i have seen of babies born with it were enough for me, it is horrendous. I had the vaccine with my last pregnancy too and no issues.

R7589 · 28/08/2018 17:22

I had my whooping cough vaccine when I was 16 weeks, 20 week scan at exactly 20 week and all was fine. 25 weeks now and no concerns.
I personally didn't even contemplate not getting it.

Stephisaur · 28/08/2018 17:27

Had mine at 22 weeks. Little man is still wriggling about 2 weeks later.

I’m sure everything will be fine :)

oreolovegood · 30/08/2018 11:07

Had it yesterday everyone! Couldn't even feel it, have the deadest arm ever now though 😂

Fireba11 · 30/08/2018 11:15

I've had mine - didn't even consider not getting it done (and I'm not fantastic with needles!). It didn't hurt at all but had a bit of an achey arm afterwards. Baby still moving lots Grin

Darkstar4855 · 30/08/2018 11:17

Please have it, my friend’s nephew is in NICU severely ill with whooping cough after contracting it at a couple of weeks old. It is heartbreaking to see them suffering.

BigBlueBubble · 30/08/2018 11:26

I’m not usually anti-vax but I chose not to have the WC vaccine because I’m not convinced that any vaccinations during pregnancy are safe and it’s questionable how much protection the baby receives. WC isn’t common where I live anyway. It was a personal decision that I agonised over. Baby has had all his vaccinations after birth.
