Plus size, no weight gain, am I going to be skinny post birth?

This is one for experienced plus size mums. To be clear I have started very plus sized, BMI 44.

As I have been on the gestational diabetes diet I have lost a few pounds. Not much. My bump is very firm.

Does this mean I'll be substantially smaller when I give birth? I should say my pre pregnancy clothes still fit despite my belly bump getting bigger and bigger.

I'm 23 weeks.

A couple of my friends have had GD and had to be careful with their diet. Neither put on weight during pregnancy and yes, when they had their babies (healthy weights and healthy babies) they lost a couple of stone post birth.

Cinnamus · 24/08/2018 15:36

You're only 23 weeks so still a long way to go! If you stay at zero weight gain you'll have lost weight, but make sure you don't put on weight between now and the birth.

Good luck!

I had BMI 29 when I got pregnant, so very overweight but not obese. I didn't put on much weight (3lbs) until 30 weeks. Then I put on a stone and a half in the last 12 weeks. Blush Hope it doesn't happen for you but it is a possibility - as baby gets bigger I found I became less mobile so got lazier and laid around eating snacks all day, especially as I wasn't working for the last 8 weeks of pregnancy I was super lazy. Keep active and keep eating healthily and yes theoretically you should lose weight!

WhatAnAbsolutePenis · 24/08/2018 15:48

If your BMI is 44 at present, you won't be skinny when your baby is born.

Not in my experience, no Blush but you might lose weight if breastfeeding (I did with first two, not third one).

WhatAnAbsolutePenis · 24/08/2018 15:52

Eh?!
Your title asked if you would be skinny after your baby was born.

Have I missed something?!

MozzieMagnet · 24/08/2018 15:53

But...I did eat many of the banned things ie carbs, sugar after giving birth so if you continue low carbing afterwards you might do better than me Cake Brew sorry

Piffpaffpoff · 24/08/2018 15:53

I had GD diet controlled, size 18. As a result, I was the same weight at term as I was when I started and a stone and a bit lighter when I got home after giving birth. This happened with both pregnancies and I am a 14 now. However, I would just say the rumour about weight dropping off when breastfeeding was a total lie for me. I stayed the same weight the whole year I fed (each time) then quickly dropped a few pounds when I stopped.

peachesarenom · 24/08/2018 15:57

Thanks BusySittingDown that's what I was hoping to hear! I'd be delighted with that! I desperately want my baby to grow up to be like DH fit, healthy and active so I want to be able to get involved too.

It's taking so long Cinnamus! It will be hard to maintain discipline!

Putting on loads in the third trimester is a big fear RedPandaMama I'm super paranoid about having a big baby and then him getting stuck though l, so I am well motivated to try and not lose control of food consumption. My appetite is tiny now.

I'm starting mat leave early so I can swim and walk everyday.

This. You might lose some weight after giving birth but you’ll just revert to how you were before pregnancy. It’s hard but the best thing to do would be to get on a diet and be a healthy weight so you can enjoy running around with your baby.

MozzieMagnet · 24/08/2018 15:59

On average, a breastfeeding mom needs an extra 300-500 calories per day than was needed to maintain her pre-pregnancy weight to keep a sturdy milk supply. (Kellymom) A healthy, well-nourished breastfeeding mom can safely lose up to 1 pound per week.

I did with DC1 and 2...but put weight on bf DC3. I suspect because I was older, snacking more in the night and eating convenience/junk tbh. But as piff says, it can be the opposite.

DieAntword · 24/08/2018 16:00

I wasn’t. And if you breastfeed be warned it makes you ravenous and it can easily pile back on.

peachesarenom · 24/08/2018 16:02

I will defo give breastfeeding a good go MozzieMagnet I have already identified my local support groups but my friends baby almost died of dehydration as bf'ing wasn't going well so I expect I'll go with the flow. I feel a lot better within myself low carbing so will prolly continue but I have told DH I'd like a black forest gataue post birth!

No pop at RatHammock for answering your question then, OP?

Just me? Hmm

lola212121 · 24/08/2018 16:04

Defo Brest feed . I know loads of mums who lost weight through breastfeeding .

Verbena87 · 24/08/2018 16:05

Can’t comment on the weight thing from a BMI perspective as I was a lowish BMI before. However, I gained nearly 2 stone in pregnancy and it came off quickly breastfeeding, and I think feeding helped my uterus contract back down quickly too.

Regardless, it sounds like you’re doing great and setting yourself up for success long term with plans to walk and swim. And don’t fret too much about a big baby: mine was 10lb9oz and I’ve got 36” hips. He still fit through them!

peachesarenom · 24/08/2018 16:06

Thanks Piffpaffpoff good to know. Did you continue low carbing once you had finished breastfeeding or did you just find your appetitie had permanently changed for you to get down to a size 14?

OP posts:
peachesarenom · 24/08/2018 16:07

Have you had a plus size pregnancy RatHammock?

OP posts:
peachesarenom · 24/08/2018 16:09

I do worry about the 'ravenous' feeling combined with new baby and 'helpful friends and fam' who will bring me biscuits! It's difficult though as if you don't eat enough you can lose your milk supply right?

I was 13stone before I fell pregnant. Only put on one stone when term, lost two stone on the day I gave birth. So lost a stone and all my clothes were loose on me. Kept it off whilst on maternity leave but crept back up to my 13 stone when back at work film time.
Now 5 years on, I'm finally exercising and loving it and losing weight.

peachesarenom · 24/08/2018 16:18

Thanks lola212121 and thank you
Verbena87 it's really good to hear.

Oh congratulations Ratbagcatbag I think the thing there is 'full time work' I always lose weight on holiday. I think it is because I hate my work and comfort ear biscuits!

Hi again OP
Re Milk Supply

Oatmeal biscuit or porridge
Breastfeeding tea (fenugreek in it)
Snacks - what you are doing now: nuts/apple slices etc not mini mars bars at 3am

Good luck to you and well done Shamrock
