Have my glucose tolerance test next week, OH is off on the day i have it, is it best to have someone with me or will it just be a waste? First pregnancy so unsure. Thanks

If you want to... but be aware it takes a very long time. Take a book or something. Its not particularly frightening or anything unless you hate having bloods done? Its just a bit tedious because it takes so long and the drink you have to drink is a bit yuck.

Thegirlhasnoname · 17/08/2018 12:04

First pregnancy here and I didn’t take anybody with me for mine (it was very last minute!). Nothing too exciting happens at it - blood test, have a drink, wait in a room for 2 hours and then another blood test before home - so if you decide not to take anybody with you then take a good book ☺️

I didn't take anyone with me for mine. If you are driving yourself, I would recommend taking a small snack with you to eat before you set off and I felt a little shaky due to not eating from the evening before.

Poptart4 · 17/08/2018 12:11

Ive had 4 GTT, one with each pregnancy. Theres no reason to have someone with you and no one else at the test brought anyone. I always just take my earphones and a couple of magazines.

meadowmeow · 17/08/2018 12:16

Nah, it's bribing enough without subjecting someone else to it. Just take some tunes and Mumsnet

meadowmeow · 17/08/2018 12:17

*its BORING enough Blush

Stargirl90 · 17/08/2018 12:18

Thanks all!! Ill leave him at home then, don't want to subject him to 2 hours of boredom for no reason. Smile

Just take a book

Stephisaur · 17/08/2018 12:21

My Mum is coming with me, but only because she's insisting on coming to at least one hospital appointment.

This should put her off Grin

peodar · 17/08/2018 12:32

Agree with the snacks, something to do and a drink for after - you're not even allowed water. Had a couple this time round and I brought some work to do in the hospital Café - they were quite happy for me to disappear for 90 minutes but the timings are tight so you can't go far!

Theweasleytwins · 17/08/2018 12:42

Dh came with me while mil looked after our other dc- 2 1/2 hour break💖💖💖💖💖

GlitterRollerSkate · 17/08/2018 12:44

I didn't take anyone either time. The 2nd time was bliss.. 2 hours with a book and no toddler! Grin

firsttimemum090 · 17/08/2018 13:57

IS IT NO WATER THE NIGHT BEFORE AS WELL?

usernotfound0000 · 17/08/2018 13:57

Nope, just a book or something else to keep you occupied.

usernotfound0000 · 17/08/2018 13:58

You can have water during the fast period, but that is all that is allowed. You will need some to take away the horrid taste of the glucose drink!

Theweasleytwins · 17/08/2018 14:03

I had mine e days ago and was allowed sips of water during the two hour window? Also was given a cup of water after drinking the nasty stuff

usernotfound0000 · 17/08/2018 14:05

Yep, mine was only last week and the letter and the staff confirmed just water in the two hour window.

MeeWhoo · 17/08/2018 14:18

I'm going to go against the grain here and suggest your OH goes if he already has a day off.
I have only ever fainted twice in my life, and each time it was because of the glucose test.
The first time I took the test was by far the worst day of my first pregnancy, I had to cancel going to work as I felt rotten.
The second time (pregnancy number 2) I fainted and puked all over myself in the waiting room...
I know most people are absolutely fine, but I am not the first person to have problems with it, nor will I be the last...

palmtree1 · 17/08/2018 14:30

You don't need anyone with you. It would be a waste of his time off. Might be worth asking him to collect you as I often feel lightheaded afterwards

RuskBaby · 17/08/2018 14:37

If he goes do not let him bring a coffee and danish to the waiting room like someone did when I had mine Angry

Stargirl90 · 17/08/2018 14:42

@MeeWhoo bet that was awful :( were you on your own at your appointments?
I'll just ask him and see what he wants to do, i've never fainted before either but at least i'd be in the best place if i was to get ill

I didn’t take anyone.
I was allowed home for mine though, I lived next door to the surgery in a tiny village so went home and watched a film!

MeeWhoo · 17/08/2018 14:56

Yes, I went on my own because first time it never even occurred to me it might be a problem and the second time Dh was looking after our eldest.

I would not ask Dh to take a day off for it, but if he is already off work I would ask him to come, or at least be somewhere where he could easily pick you up in case you need it. As evidenced by all the other replies, most people are absolutely fine though! Smile

BlueBug45 · 17/08/2018 14:56

My OH accompanied to my GTT and was a welcome distraction in the 2 hour window plus we had lunch together afterwards. I then had 2 more appointments that day so he came to those as well.

And yes you can drink water during the fasting period as they don't want you to dehydrate.

olderthanyouthink · 17/08/2018 15:23

DP came with me as I need pinning down for needle things Blush we sat in the sun and chatted for the 2 hrs. My hospital said no food after 10pm and only water to drink until the test was complete.
